An in-depth look at the epic literary history of the short, poetic genre of the epigram

From Nestor’s inscribed cup to tombstones, bathroom walls, and Twitter tweets, the ability to express oneself concisely and elegantly, continues to be an important part of literary history unlike any other. This book examines the entire history of the epigram, from its beginnings as a purely epigraphic phenomenon in the Greek world, where it moved from being just a note attached to physical objects to an actual literary form of expression, to its zenith in late 1st century Rome, and further through a period of stagnation up to its last blooming, just before the beginning of the Dark Ages.

A Companion to Ancient Epigram offers the first ever full-scale treatment of the genre from a broad international perspective. The book is divided into six parts, the first of which covers certain typical characteristics of the genre, examines aspects that are central to our understanding of epigram, and discusses its relation to other literary genres. The subsequent four parts present a diachronic history of epigram, from archaic Greece, Hellenistic Greece, and Latin and Greek epigrams at Rome, all the way up to late antiquity, with a concluding section looking at the heritage of ancient epigram from the Middle Ages up to modern times.

A Companion to Ancient Epigram will be of great interest to scholars and students of literature, world literature, and ancient and general history. It will also be an excellent addition to the shelf of any public and university library.

This paper concerns the meta-poetic features characterising two epigrams by Alcaeus of Messene, 16 G-P and 11 G-P. Firstly (pp. 11-17), it intends to demonstrate, by means of etymological analysis, how the deep meaning of 16 G-P, namely an enigmatic epitaph for a girl, lies in the comparison between the activity of making riddles and that of composing poetry of a riddling nature. Secondly (pp. 17-28), it will show how 11 G-P, far from being just a somewhat conventional praise of Homer, focuses on the image of children who, “waving” ("uphenamenoi" 11 G-P, v. 2) a riddle, kill Homer, meant as a metaphor for Hellenistic poets and, among them, for Alcaeus, the kamòn aìnigma (16 G-P, v. 9). In order to do this, a brief survey will be given of the biographical tradition about Homer, of folklore studies on “neck-riddles”, and of the meta-poetic value of the image of childhood as it appears in some other loci of Hellenistic poetry.

Success in war over rival kings or barbarian invaders was one of the marks of legitimation for the Hellenistic rulers. Depictions of, or allusions to, war are quite rare in the surviving Hellenistic court poetry; however, we can have a glance of military life (and death) through the lens of verse epitaphs for men who served in the army –in every rank, from royal philoi to humble privates–, and from the occasional dedicatory epigrams they commissioned for temple offerings. Poetic portrayal of members of an army involves display (or concealment) of many layers of their individual and public “identity”: social status, ethnicity, cultural background, religious belief, etc. Building a corpus of such epigrams produced in the 4th-1st cent. BC, from every area of the Hellenistic world (mainland Greece, Macedonia, the Ptolemaic, Attalid and Seleucid kingdoms, the independent poleis of Asia Minor) I shall try to assess similarities and differences in self-presentation of men who –often gone unremarked by ancient historians or court poets– helped building the power of their basileis or keeping the freedom of their own polis.

This paper compares a number of epigrams from the Garland of Philip and their likely models in the Garland of Meleager. By such a comparison, this work aims to stress the common features in the Philippan variations, which in turn would represent stylistic trends of the second Garland, namely: 1) the avoidance of suspense, by revealing the theme of a poem from its beginning; 2) the use of standard expressions, possibly felt as sub-generic hallmarks; 3) the reduction in the number of enjambments and the overall tendency towards a rigorous distribution of the themes in every line or couplet; 4) the relevant role played by the words, which the model and the imitation share; 5) the lexical refinement, a frequent feature but less prominent than commonly believed. By trying to shed light on these stylistic trends of Philippan variations, this paper wants to offer an argument against the view of Philippan poetry as merely imitative.

In the light of the new verses preserved by the P. Mil. Vogl. VIII 309, this paper aims at a new examination of the inscribed epigrams that Werner Peek ascribed to Posidippus of Pella: the discovery of hundreds of new verses that the first editors and most scholars have considered as Posidippus’ work requires a reexamination of the main issues concerning this poet, and especially a close scrutiny of the inscribed texts mentioned above.

Because it is a flexible genre, the epigram can be analyzed in groups or alone. It provides researchers with different possibilities of epigram grouping and methodological approaches. Studies on funerary epigram frequently analyze the poems according to related themes focusing on the dead: dead warriors, women dead in childbirth, dead in the sea among others. However, an approach to funerary epigrams which does not focus on the dead allows a broader investigation of other themes. Thus, the present thesis was based on the studies of Giuseppe Giangrande, Francis Cairns and Alexander Sens on funerary epigrams that use sympotic elements in order to analyze the function of such elements and to verify how the sympotic τόποι found in funerary epigrams continue being used of if they suffer modifications. In order to do so, we selected epigrams from Book VII of The Greek Anthology that display sympotic and funerary lexicon and, departing from the τόποι, three groups of epigrams were identified: 1) those dedicated to the poet Anacreon, 2) those dedicated to drunk women and 3) those dedicated to drunk men. In epigrams dedicated to Anacreon, sympotic elements recover his poetry and connect it to the epigrammatists by means of the transformation of the funeral space and the relationship between the passerby and the poet. In poems dedicated to drunken women, the consumption of wine and their burial near places of wine production emphasize the mobility of old women, their distancing from their relatives and the comic character of the dead women due to the characterization of their drunkenness. Finally, in the funerary epigrams dedicated to drunken men, moderation and immoderation are evident. In some, moderation is aligned with poetic composition. In others, the excess of wine causes accidents portrayed with a comic tone. These epigrams warn the passerby not to make the same mistakes as the dead they commemorate. Another group of epigrams uses sympotic references to create charades to the passerby. The last group, in turn, is composed by epitaphs for philosophers killed by drunkenness. Here we see the tension between moderation and philosophical teachings permeated by the anecdotal and comic tone. It is suggested, therefore, that the presence of sympotic elements acquires a different function according to the group of dead. Thus, it is observed that, although the epigrams were composed in different centuries, the τόποι portrayed gain different nuances, which allows us to conclude that funerary epigrams with sympotic elements also reflect the creative tension between tradition and innovation, as debated by Marco Fantuzzi and Richard Hunter.

Il poeta Mnasalce di Sicione – fiorito nella metà del III sec. a.C. e affiancato nel proemio della Corona meleagrea al più famoso Leonida (AP IV 1,16) – si caratterizza quale autore di epigrammi erotici, dedicatorî e sepolcrali; fra questi ultimi trovano spazio epitafi caratterizzati dall’utilizzo di codici espressivi peculiari per veicolare l’espressione del dolore, della commozione e del rimpianto nelle commemorazioni tanto di uomini e donne comuni che di personaggi illustri.
Al primo gruppo appartengono – all’interno dell’Anthologia Palatina – il compianto angoscioso e straziante per la morte prematura di giovani fanciulle (AP VII 488 e 491) e di un uccellatore (AP VII 171), al secondo la celebrazione del ricordo del poeta Esiodo (AP VII 54) e la commemorazione di soldati caduti per l’amata patria (AP VII 242).
La trattazione di exempla significativi permetterà di individuare i tratti più caratteristici dell’espressione del dolore negli epigrammi del poeta dal punto di vista tematico, linguistico-stilistico e metrico; risulterà chiaro come Mnasalce utilizzi spesso un lessico tipico dell’epica e della lirica arcaica o tardo-arcaica, talvolta condiviso da epigrammisti a lui precedenti e successivi, ma non rinunci, se si amplia lo sguardo anche alla restante produzione (sia agli epitimbi per animali che alla produzione anatematica), tanto ad hapax legomena di grande ricercatezza, quanto a coppie aggettivo-sostantivo del tutto inusuali, che costituiscono un unicum nella tradizione letteraria. Numerosi sono, inoltre, gli indizi che suggeriscono un contatto con la tradizione epigrafica coeva, precedente e posteriore: tutti tratti, questi, finora trascurati dalla critica (sia dai contributi minori che dalle edizioni di Seelbach 1964 e Gow-Page 1965) e che meritano di essere valutati all’interno del più ampio panorama della poesia ellenistica greca.

My PhD dissertation is an exhaustive commentary on the 31 epigrams ascribed to Apollonides. It deals with textual, literary, intertextual, historical, stylistic and metric matters. From a methodological point of view, I employed such a multiple perspective of analysis to fully understand the literariness and multiple layers of meaning of the epigrams of Apollonides. The commentary is preceded by an extended introduction, where I sum up the poetic features of Apollonides in the context of Late Hellenistic epigrammatic literature.

No ancient genre preserves as many female-authored poems as that of epigram. The private production, and publication in writing, of Hellenistic epigram gave female poets, who were generally excluded from public oral performance, an opportunity for dissemination of their work not afforded them by previous largely orally-performed genres of Greek poetry.
The four major female authors of epigram are the Hellenistic poets Erinna, Moero, Anyte, and Nossis, all of whom flourished in the first generation of Hellenistic epigram. Each introduced  critical innovations in the genre.  The work of each of these poets shows a high level of education, deep roots in their poetic predecessors, and keen and witty innovation both on canonical authors and on the conventions of inscribed epigram.  All were highly influential on their (male) successors in the genre of book epigram, which in some crucial ways they may almost be said to have invented.

Chapter 10 studies Hellenistic and Roman military epitaphs, and addresses a number of interconnected issues: the unpopularity of epitaphs for individual soldiers in the Greek Anthology; the near absence of inscribed epitaphs in literary sources, despite the fact that they are often of good literary quality; and the question of their authorship.
Apparently, there was no ‘Hellenistic Simonides’, author of warriors’ inscriptional epitaphs worthy to be gathered in a book. In the seventh book of the Greek Anthology there are many fictitious epitaphs for Homeric heroes or famous historical figures, but funerary epigrams celebrating the death in battle of individual, contemporary military men are only a dozen. This lack may be a choice of later compilers of florilegia, or may be due to the fact that epigrammatists who composed  military epitaphs did not publish them as a collection. There is no evidence that any epigrammatist known from the Greek Anthology also acted as a professional writer of military epitaphs; we can just propose some hypothetical candidates for this role, such as Damagetus  and Posidippus. Epitaphs for common soldiers were usually commissioned to professional poets, most of whom now remain anonymous (only occasionally we find signatures in epigraphic poems); the technitai  found their inspiration in Homer and in the elegiac, lyric and tragic ‘classics’; anthologies like that of Meleager could also offer some models, although the main literary-epigraphic reference was still the Simonidean corpus. The lack of a specific, recognizable personal style makes it difficult to trace the same hand in contemporary epitaphs. It has been suggested that professional versifiers used ‘sample books’ for composing epitaphs, but the very existence and the nature of these anthologies is still to be proved. In some cases, the deceased, especially when he presents himself as a veteran belonging to the local élite, may have had his say on the contents and form of his future epitaph, or even might have been responsible for composing it.

Το “Αβροκόμης και Ανθία» είναι το μοναδικό σωζώμενο έργο του Ξενοφώντος του Εφεσίου, ίσως αποτελεί επιτομή ενός μεγαλύτερου έργου.  Έργο πιθανώς του 2ου ή 3ου αι. μ.Χ.. Ίσως, ακόμη και του 4ου αι.μ.Χ.           

Τρεις συμφοιτητές και φίλοι, στην Φιλοσοφική Σχολή του Πανεπιστημίου Αθηνών (Ν.Σ. Λιβαδάς, Χ.Ν. Λαμπράκης, Δ. Πίππας) τηρούν σημειώσεις από ένα ενδιαφέρον (και πρωτότυπο για την εποχή του (1903/4)) διδακτικό αντικείμενο του καθηγητού τους, Ν.Γ.Πολίτη: Το έργο «ΣΗΜΕΙΩΣΕΙΣ ΓΙΑ ΤΗΝ ΑΡΧΑΙΟΛΟΓΙΑ ΤΟΥ ΕΛΛΗΝΙΚΟΥ ΘΕΑΤΡΟΥ» , το οποίο βρέθηκε μεταξύ των παλαιών κωδίκων της βιβλιοθήκης του Μουσείου Μυκόνου.

Ο Κεφαλλήν Ν.Σ.Λιβαδάς είναι, ίσως, ο περισσότερο ιδιόρρυθμος και πολυπράγμων από τους τρείς και, τα χέρια του επιστήθιου φίλου του Δ. Πίππα, και στο Μουσείο Μυκόνου, βρίσκονται και άλλα πονήματά του, που αργότερα έπεσαν σε αφάνεια.

Ο Λιβαδάς, μετέπειτα συγγραφέας (αλλά και εκδότης) διηγημάτων και μυθιστορημάτων,  συγκινείται από το έργο της ύστερης Αρχαιότητας και ετοιμάζει μία απόδοση του αρχαίου ρομάντζου σε γλαφυρή, βατή καθαρεύουσα. Ο τρόπος προσέγγισης είναι ελεύθερος, επιχειρούνται μέσα στο αρχαίο κείμενο ερμηνευτικές παρεμβάσεις, και, ακόμη, μικρές προσθήκες.

Ο Ν.Σ. Λιβαδάς  δημοσιεύει σε συνέχειες, σε άγνωστη εφημερίδα (των Αθηνών), το 1907, την μετάφρασή του, και την αφιερώνει «τωι ως αδελφώι Δ. Πίππα» (ο Δημοσθένης Πίππας ήταν Έφορος των Αρχαιοτήτων στους Δελφούς στις αρχές του 20ου αι.). Στη βιβλιοθήκη του Μουσείου Μυκόνου βρέθηκε και το μοναδικό σωζόμενο αντίτυπο, σταχωμένος κώδικας από φύλλα εφημερίδας, κομμένα με ψαλίδι στο όριο του περιθωρίου των στηλών:

Η φράση «τήκεται ως χιών», που χρησιμοποιεί ο Λιβαδάς για να περιγράψει την ψυχολογική κατάσταση της ερωτευμένης Ανθίας (η οποία δεν γνωρίζει εάν ο έρωτάς της βρήκε ανταπόκριση από τον ωραίο Αβροκόμη), απουσιάζει από το αρχαίο κείμενο. Αναζητητέα, λοιπόν, η προέλευσή της στην Αρχαία Ελληνική Γραμματεία.

Η ίδια φράση απαντάται σε ερωτικό επίγραμμα του 3ου αι.π.Χ. από την Αιτωλολοκρική μεθόριο (Μπούχουρη Μηλέας), επιγραφή την οποία, μαζί με τα κοντινά της υπολείματα αρχαίου τείχους,  ανακάλυψε και κατέγραψε το 1921 ο αρχαιολόγος Ν. Παπαδάκης :

Η έκφραση αυτή, όμως, αποτελεί λεκτική προσαρμογή σε κοινό μέτρο (δακτυλικό εξάμετρο) και προέρχεται από τον Όμηρο (Οδ. 19. 208), συγκεκριμένα από το περιστατικό της συνάντησης της Πηνελόπης με τον Οδυσσέα:

Το ρήμα «τήκομαι», ως δηλωτικό της σωματικής φθίσης που ακολουθεί τον (ανεκπλήρωτο;) ερωτικό πόθο, απαντάται σε ολόκληρο το σώμα της ελληνικής ερωτικής λογοτεχνίας –φυσικά και στα επιγράμματα της Παλατινής Ανθολογίας  αλλά και στην Νεώτερη Ελληνική Λογοτεχνία:

Η ορολογία του επιγράμματος παραπέμπει τόσο στις επιτύμβιες όσο και στις αναθηματικές επιγραφές. Ο όρος «κατάχρυσος» αναφέρεται στα επίχρυσα υπό ανάθεση σκεύη και αγάλματα, και η «μνημοσύνη» είναι οφειλόμενη τιμή στους αποβιώσαντες: Άρα γε, η σχέση της Μνασαρώς με τον ποιμένα δεν βρίσκεται σε ισχύ την στιγμή της χάραξης του επιγράμματος;

Παρ’ όλο που το επίγραμμα ανήκει στην Ελληνιστική εποχή, η χρήση των αφηρημένων ουσιαστικών σε –σύνη είναι συχνή μόνον μετά τον 4ο αι.μ.Χ.: Η σχετική έρευνα του Patrick James, στις ημέρες μας, δικαιώνει πλήρως τον Παππαδάκη: Το κείμενο βρίσκεται κοντά στο ήθος του κοινοτικού βυζαντινού ανθρώπου και στην Καινή Διαθήκη.

Ακόμη και η αναφορά στο επάγγελμα της αγαπημένης του επιγραμματοποιού («απήτρια», ράφτρα) παραπέμπει στην Οδύσσεια του Ομήρου και στην «νήθουσα» Πηνελόπη:

Οι οικιακές εργασίες που διακονούνται από την Μνασαρώ τυγχάνουν της προστασίας της Αθηνάς Εργάνης, Ιερό της οποίας ήρθε στο φώς στην Φωκική Αμβρυσσό (Δίστομο) :

Η λέξη «απήτρια» απαντάται, ήδη, στις πήλινες πινακίδες της Μυκηναϊκής περιόδου (στην «Γραμμική B’»): Εδώ, οι απήτριες δεν είναι οι κοινωνικά έωλες «βελονιάστρες», αλλά  προσωπικό που εργάζεται στα ανάκτορα:

Στις ελληνιστικές και ρωμαϊκές επιγραφές απαντάται συχνά και ο συνώνυμος όρος «ακεστίς», «ακέστρια», πότε με θετικό πρόσημο (το «Ακέστιον» μιας αττικής επιγραφής είναι μία από τις παρθένους «τῶν ειργασμένων  τῇ  ̛Αθηνᾷ τά ἔρια» (I.G. II2, 1034)) και πότε με αρνητικό (ένας «καταδών», στον ερωτικό του κατάδεσμο, «καταδᾷ και την ἀκέστριαν» (I.G. I-III, Attica NV 7).
                         
Ο Έρως, όχι ένα «αγρηνό», αλλά ένα οικόσιτο της ελληνικής κοινοτικής εστίας, δεν έχει καν την πολυτέλεια ενός επιγραφικού τύπου, αφού, για να εκφραστεί, χρησιμοποιεί το επικό μέτρο και έναν μικτό (επιτύμβιο – αναθηματικό) τύπο. Δεν διαμαρτύρεται για την κακοπάθειά του, αλλά αποτελεί ένα ευαίσθητο βαρόμετρο για την υγεία και ευωχία του «οίκου» των αρχαίων, βυζαντινών και νεώτερων Ελλήνων. Γι’ αυτό και η έλλειψή του απηχεί ένα κενό αντίστοιχο της μεταβολής στην φυσική τάξη, με την οποία παραβάλλεται.

  Ν.Σ.Τ.Λιβαδάς: Λογοτέχνης και κλασικός φιλόλογος (λατινιστής) ∙ εξέδωσε στην Αθήνα το εβδομαδιαίο και από το τεύχος 12 δεκαπενθήμερο περιοδικό Ελληνικά Μυθιστορήματα και Διηγήματα (ΕΜΔ) σε 16 τεύχη, από 31 Ιουλίου ώς 16 Δεκεμβρίου 1929 και αναζητούσε για δημοσίευση κείμενα νέων λογοτεχνών. Θηνιάτην Αργοστόλιον -Το θαυμάσιον «Ένα γράμμα» σας δημοσιεύομεν σήμερον λίαν ευχαρίστως. Στείλατε μας και άλλα πεζογραφήματα σας». Στην αντίστοιχη στήλη της αλληλογραφίας του αρ. 15, 1.12.29, αποκαλύπτει ακόμη ένα ψευδώνυμο του και φαίνεται να ξεχνά ότι στο περιοδικό δημοσίευσε με ψευδώνυμα αρκετά πεζά και ποιήματα του: «Ο διευθυντής του περιοδικού, έχων δημοσιεύσει από του 1902 περί τα εξήκοντα διηγήματα και ιδιαίτερον τόμον (τον υπό το γνωστόν ψευδώνυμον L. von Armbugmann "Ιστορίες για λίγους σήμερα και είθε για όλους αύριον"), δεν κατεχώρισεν ιδικά του έργα, αλλ' ήνοιξε τας σελίδας του περιοδικού εις τους νέους».

"Doriktetos chora. The symbol of the spear in funerary or honorary epigrams/inscriptions for
Ptolemaic philoi and soldiers."

An interesting epigram, preserved by Stephanus of Byzantium, has been composed to accompany an honorary statue of Neoptolemos, a Ptolemaic general who, on the occasion of “barbarian” invasions, helped the city of Tlos, situated in the interior of Lycia, a region under the control of Egypt under Ptolemy Philadelphos. The poem suggests that Neoptolemos is portrayed as a doryphoros, like the Lysippean Alexander praised by many poetae docti active in Alexandria (see
Posid. 65, 70 A.-B.; Asclepiades A.P. XVI 120; cfr. Antiph. A.P. VI 97). The symbol of the spear, usually associated to Hellenistic kings both in poetry and in the visual arts, represents the martial aspect of the ruler, who, with the protection of the gods, conquers and preserves his domain, the «spear-won land» (dorivkthtoı cwvra). Scholars have generally overlooked the presence of this symbol in documents referring to the king’s generals, philoi and also private soldiers. I shall examine some of these, with special focus on the Ptolemaic kingdom.""
