History of Early Christian Church

Originally a Masters of Divinity Thesis for which the author was awarded Honors in Church History, this book traces the development of Jewish Christianity from its beginnings in the earliest Christian communities through its apparent disappearance in the fourth or fifth century. The author’s thesis is that within the diversity which characterized the Jewish Christianity of the early Church, there existed at least one Jewish Christian sect whose theology stood within the acceptable boundaries of orthodoxy of the greater Church, that this sect existed through at least the fifth century, at which point it was declared heretical by the Church Fathers and eventually died out despite the fact that it remained within the bounds of orthodoxy and considered itself a part of the greater Church.  The thesis also suggests that the increasing antipathy of the Church toward Jewish Christianity was the result of a variety of interrelated influences operating over several centuries. Some of these influences included the changing demographics of the Church and the accompanying clash of cultures; the increasing isolation of Jewish Christianity from the predominantly Gentile Church; power struggles between competing Christian communities in Palestine, as well as Rome’s interest in asserting its primacy; theological and pastoral concerns, which were well-intentioned but which resulted in increasingly narrow views of orthodoxy and orthopraxis; as well as outright anti-Jewish feelings.

En 1517 el fraile agustino Martín Lutero publicaba sus 95 tesis en Wittenberg, acto que simboliza el comienzo de un periodo de gran convulsión en todos los órdenes para la Europa cristiana. Al año siguiente nacía en Burgos Francisco de Enzinas, miembro de una importante familia de mercaderes en esa ciudad castellana, tan dinámica y floreciente en aquel momento, llamado a convertirse en uno de los primeros representantes del protestantismo hispano.
Este Congreso tiene como objetivo conmemorar el doble centenario del comienzo de la Reforma protestante y del nacimiento de Francisco de Enzinas. Además de ser autor de la primera traducción castellana impresa del Nuevo Testamento y de distintas obras de Lutero y de Calvino, así como de autores clásicos grecolatinos, Enzinas fue, sobre todo, una de las figuras más significativas del Humanismo y del primer siglo de la Reforma en España.
Por todo ello, el Congreso pretende profundizar, por un lado, en el conocimiento de la figura y obra de Enzinas, situándolo en su contexto histórico, humanista y reformado, atendiendo a aspectos intelectuales, culturales, políticos y religiosos. Por otro, se centrará en la necesidad de establecer criterios que ayuden a entender los nuevos conceptos ligados a lo que estaba sucediendo en las fronteras religiosas generadas en ese momento transcendental de la historia de Europa. En última instancia, se tratará de revisar y evaluar la presencia de la Reforma protestante en España en la época moderna.

Resumo: Neste artigo, nosso propósito é refletir sobre duas situações nas quais as autoridades eclesiásticas, quando confrontadas, buscaram estigmatizar seus adversários mediante uma argumentação eivada de metáforas médicas. Na primeira delas, vemos Cipriano, bispo exilado de Cartago sob o governo de Décio, tratar os lapsi como uma moléstia que colocava em risco a pureza da fé cristã num contexto de perseguição ao cristianismo. Na segunda, lidamos com o caso de João Crisóstomo, que, na condição de presbítero e principal pregador da igreja de Antioquia, se dedicou, em finais da década de 380, a condenar os judaizantes como responsáveis por disseminar o contágio entre os fiéis de sua congregação. Ambos os exemplos nos revelam o quanto a cristianização do Império Romano se fez por intermédio de um confronto discursivo no qual uma das imagens mais poderosas foi a associação entre dissenso religioso e patologia, manejada ad nauseam pelas facções cristãs com o propósito de fortalecerem a sua própria posição. Donatist preachers used Scripture to accredit their own church and discredit the rival one. But Catholics and Donatists shared the same scriptural background, and so the same verses were sometimes referred to opposing points of view. Faithful, disoriented, took advantage of spatial proximity of two communities and made back and forth between one and the other to ask questions and get answers. This gave rise to a kind of living intertextuality and to a virtually endless hermeneutics.

Ma Cattolici e Donatisti condividevano lo stesso patrimonio scritturistico ed i medesimi versetti furono talvolta richiamati a sostenere prospettive opposte. Ich war im Rahmen einer Übung um das Jahr 1990 in Basel kurz auf Clemens eingegangen innerhalb einer Reihe von Christen-Denkern, die sich explizit mit der Problematik von Glauben und Denken aus¬einandergesetzt haben.
Es ging mir darum zu zeigen, dass und wie diese Frage immer wieder neu aufgegriffen werden muss. Dabei musste ich mich auf die philosophische Fragestellung beschränken und ging daher nicht auf die Theologie des Clemens ein. Die Bewertung erfolgte dabei von meiner eigenen Position her und von meinem Verständnis von dem, was Philosophie ist.

O curso objetiva reconstituir de maneira analítica as diversas relações de contato cultural e conflito estabelecido entre os diferentes grupos de cristãos da segunda metade do primeiro milênio da era cristã e o islamismo nascente, com vistas a contribuir para um redimensionamento da história das relações entre cristãos e muçulmanos, presa relativamente fácil das distorções e dos estereótipos politicamente orientados.

A perplexing development sweeps over Roman sarcophagi of the Late Empire:  the unexpected 'Entmythologisierung' or “demythologization” of their imagery.  These relief-carved coffins had featured bold mythological scenes since the very beginning of their mainstream production early in the second century, when inhumation had replaced cremation as the favored means for disposing of the dead.  How then to make sense of this repertoire’s peculiar withering and subsequent abandonment on later specimens, as mythological narratives were truncated, gods and heroes were excised, and genres featuring no mythic content whatsoever -- such as the late third century’s endless procession of sarcophagi featuring bucolic shepherds and studious philosophers -- came to the fore?

Was it perhaps driven by a burgeoning Christian faith?  To put it more succinctly, was mythological relief a casualty of Christianization?  This explanation proposes that sarcophagi featuring seasons, shepherds, philosophers, and hunters gained in popularity because their imagery was religiously neutral and thus capable of appealing to both old pagan and new Christian clientele alike, a flexibility that the older mythological sarcophagi did not have.  To be mythless meant to be non-affiliated, and thus palatable to all.  In a time of religious transformation -- which for funerary art always means a time of market transformation -- this, so the argument goes, was a selling point.

Of all the explanations commonly offered for sarcophagi’s demythologization this is perhaps the most popular, with a pedigree stretching from Rodenwaldt (1921) to Zanker (2010), yet the argument itself has never been subjected to real scrutiny.  It rests on three fundamental assumptions:  (1) that Christians did actually purchase neutral/mythless ‘pagan’ sarcophagi for their own use; (2) that they did so in numbers sufficient to affect the repertoire of pieces that pagan workshops produced; and (3) that Christians continued to buy neutral sarcophagi even after Christian ones were available.  For critical traction on these assumptions this paper turns to a close examination of the surviving monuments themselves, supplemented by social scientific reconstructions of Christian expansion and purchasing power.  It argues that the archaeological record offers minimal evidence for Christian purchase of mythless sarcophagi, and that Christian numbers and purchasing power for most of the third century were simply too low to have contributed in any significant fashion to the shift in market production towards demythologized pieces.  A nascent Christianity, in conclusion, can have played no real role in the extinction of mythological imagery on Roman sarcophagi.

Com a ascensão do cristianismo à religião oficial do Império Romano, a controvérsia religiosa passou a ser uma questão de Estado. Dada a diversidade das abordagens dos grupos cristãos estabelecidos na bacia mediterrânica sobre os pontos mais básicos de sua fé, e a divergência de suas pautas de atuação política, a polêmica religiosa transbordou das reuniões de cúpula e tomou as cidades e campos, assumindo a forma de verdadeiros conflitos civis. Neste jogo em que participaram imperadores, bispos, cortesãos, monges, princesas, chefes bárbaros e as multidões urbanas, o prêmio era o direito de estabelecer qual a definição correta da natureza de Jesus Cristo. Grande parte do caráter religioso do mundo que conhecemos foi moldado por esse conflito, centrado no período circunvizinho aos Concílios de Éfeso (431) e Calcedônia (451), e o objetivo deste curso é retomá-lo de maneira analítica.

Em um curto período do século IV depois de Cristo, o movimento de seus seguidores passou de perseguido pelas autoridades imperais a confissão pessoal de fé do Imperador Romano. O ingresso de Constantino na comunidade cristã marcou profundamente tanto o Império sob seu governo quanto a crença institucionalizada ao qual aderiu, colocando em ação forças sociais que iriam modificar profundamente as relações entre Estado, religião e cultura no mundo romano e áreas circunvizinhas.  As repercussões históricas desses acontecimentos podem ser sentidas ainda hoje. O objetivo deste curso é refletir sobre estas modificações e repercussões, assim como sobre algumas de suas leituras nos campos do discurso religioso e da análise histórica.
