Homily

Readers of this book, clergy and laity, have the opportunity to travel
through space and time and follow the formation of Christian preaching
from the time of the Apostles onward. At the same time, they can
become acquainted with the influence of the cultural environment upon  Christian preaching alongside with the criterion of the enlightened
great Teachers of the 4th c. for the transmission of the message of salvation in Christ to the demanding circles of philosophers, orators, and sophists. In our days, the urgent need for re-evangelism and the duty of
Orthodox witness to the world leads to reflection on the whole
homiletic process that must be taken into account for the Christian
message of hope, peace, and justice to be heard and received. In this
perspective, any diachronic or synchronic research on the Church's
preaching is valuable, because, in a way, it offers criteria for its
modern practical application.

Codex Sinaiticus Rescriptus (= CSR) represents a collection of fourteen Christian Palestinian Aramaic (= CPA) palimpsest manuscripts, which have been scattered through various public libraries and private collections between St Catherine’s Monastery, the National Library of Russia (St Petersburg), Staats- und Universitätbibliothek Göttingen, the former Friedrich Grote Collection, now Martin Schøyen Collection, Oslo, and some minor fragments in private hand since the middle of the nineteenth century, when the greater part was taken by Constantin Tischendorf to St. Petersburg. The presumed rest found its way through clandestine transactions to Europe. CSR is in most parts overwritten by a Georgian hand of Iovane Zosime, but the undertexts are consisting of various contents, as there are lectionaries of the Old and New Testament, the Catacheses of Cyril of Jerusalem, the beginning of the story of Prodigal son by John Chrysostom, the Vita of Pachomios, and some unidentified homilies. Each manuscript of the early CPA period carries individual features of script, orthography, linguistic variants, and lexemes that are interesting for codological as well as for grammatical and lexical studies. The overview will help placing remaining parts among the new finds in St Catherine’s Monastery.

U diplomskom radu naslovljenom "O Bogorodici u molitvi i propovijedi" središnji su predmet bavljenja jedan molitvenik i jedna zbirka propovijedi unutar kojih se istražuje lik Bogorodice. Riječ je o molitveniku "Putovanje duhovno" (1769.) Emerika Pavića i o sedam propovijedi Antuna Papušlića naslovljenih "Dužna slava sinovskoga bogoljupstva…" (1751.). U uvodnom je dijelu obrađeno razdoblje prosvjetiteljstva budući da su oba djela nastala u 18. stoljeću kada u hrvatskoj književnost prevladava poetika prosvjetiteljstva. Zatim slijedi prikaz života i rada obaju autora te glavne odrednice molitvenika „Putovanje duhovno” i Papušlićevih propovijedi. U središnjem dijelu rada istražuje se lik Bogorodice kroz molitve u molitveniku „Putovanje duhovno” te propovijedi napisane za posebne Marijanske blagdane kroz liturgijsku godinu. Cilj je ovog rada istražiti pojavnost Marije (Bogorodice, Divice, Kraljice) u molitveniku i u propovijedima, njezinu funkcionalnu uklopljenost te sličnosti i razlike određene žanrovskom profiliranošću teksta.

Intertextuality can be mentioned as one of the features determining the existence of a text (or lack there of). Intertextuality means that the text is positioned between other texts. This article presents the issue of intertextuality in the liturgical proclamation of the word of God. In a homily intertextuality has been introduced as a mean of preventing the existence of so-called "open text" in the process of actualization of the content of God Revelation (the content of the Mass Lectionary). Whereas, in a practice of preaching, intertextuality aims to strengthen the understanding of homily for congregation and support a dialogue between the preacher and the homily recipients.

Głoszenie Ewangelii stanowi istotę i misję Kościoła, która realizowana jest m.in. poprzez homilię. Należy ona do zadań niezwykle ważnych i odpowiedzialnych. W artykule odnaleźć można najistotniejsze wskazania dotyczące proforystyki w dokumentach Kościoła oraz przykład współczesnego kaznodziejstwa. Interpretacja perykopy o uzdrowieniu teściowej Szymona (por. Mk 1,29-31) w ujęciu o. Adama Szustaka ukazała pewien dysonans między orędziem tekstu źródłowego a tym, co dopowiedział kaznodzieja. Nadinterpretacja tekstu uwidoczniła się w kilku miejscach i doprowadziła do zniekształcenia, czy wręcz do zafałszowania przesłania biblijnego. Niniejszy artykuł podejmuje wciąż otwarty problem aktualizacji Pisma Świętego i odpowiedzialnej proklamacji Bożego słowa.

The correct actualization of the word of God in the Christocentric manner is still a necessary concern that aims to properly explain different elements of the kerygma to recipients. The concept of proper actualization has been systematized in the position We proclaim the Lord Jesus Christ. Content of the preaching. The reviewed publication consists of 13 articles, in which kerygmatic, existential, didactic and moral aspects of a preaching have been presented. The listed item is a compendium of correctly revealing the mystery of Jesus in the ministry of the word of God.

This article aims to organize theological issues regarding the preaching of the homily. It specifies concrete steps, which determine a correct ex- planation of mysteries of Jesus’ life for the listeners of the word of God. The study draws attention to the correct interpretation of the kerygmatic message. On this basis, further steps are built such as: right addressing of the message i.e. existential content of the homily, deepening of commu- nicated mystery i.e. didactic content of the homily, expression of a mor- al recommendation i.e. a parenetic content of the homily and leading to experience of Christ in the liturgy i.e. mistagogical dimension of homily.

Characteristics of the preaching of the Church lies in a clearly specified content, quite different from other public speeches, which is the Word of God. This form of preaching, in terms of the content being the Word of God, and in terms of the form being the word of man, can be described as the word of God in the word of man. Therefore efficiency of the Word of God depends in a sense on its human and linguistic sense. A preacher's word spoken from behind a pulpit should be very powerful. A correct emission is necessary for a beautiful liturgy, but also for a didactic work and preaching. The article, referring to the theory of preaching, point at the importance of a speech therapy in future preachers' training. "Sztuka żywego słowa" obejmuje zagadnienia związane z anatomią, fizjologią, fizyką, fonetyką, psychologią oraz metapsychologią. Jego zda-niem słowo ma moc magiczną, impresyjną. Taką też moc powinno posiadać słowo kaznodziei padające z kościelnej ambony. Aby tak się stało, kaznodzieja powinien być w możliwie najlepszy sposób do tej posługi przygotowany. The speech act theory has been developing since the beginning of the XX century. In its scope English philosopher of a language John L. Austin presented the theory where he emphasized the presence of performative function of language. What is meant here is an utterance in which particular sentences are not only a description of action. Using the expressions sets out a creation of a particular reality. In the religious language which we use during preaching homily performative function of language may also occur. The pragmatic analysis of language of the homily demonstrates that performative function of language may occur in homilies in two cases. First one it comes from the pragmatic analysis of expressions of religious language. The second it may be associate with a function that we can call the mystagogical function of homily.

Проповедь об успении Девы Марии из «Исландской книги проповедей» (предисловие и перевод)
Проповедь об успении Девы Марии (Assumptio sancte Marie) входит в состав сборника, известного в историографии как «Исландская книга проповедей». Составленная, по всей видимости, до 1200 г., проповедь является одним из образцов ранней исландской письменности и христианской литературы. Перед составителем проповеди стояла нетривиальная задача: выразить новые понятия и описать новые явления непривычным к ним языком, и результат ее решения, с одной стороны, напоминает разговорную речь родовых саг, а с другой — это достаточно темный ученый стиль, стремящийся повторить, по-видимому, латинские риторические приемы. Неясно, предназначалась ли эта проповедь для чтения перед аудиторией или являлась своего рода образцом и опорой для проповедника. В пользу последнего говорит неоднородная структура «Книги» в целом, а также наличие в ней текстов нелитургического характера, в то время как в пользу первого — использование местоимений первого лица и прямых обращений к слушателям. В этой публикации предлагается перевод проповеди, снабженный краткими вступительными замечаниями.

The Homily on the Assumption of the Virgin Mary from The Icelandic Homily Book (Introduction and Translation)
The homily on the Assumption of the Virgin Mary (Assumptio sancte Marie) is part of the collection usually referred to in the historiography as “The Icelandic Homily Book”. Composed, by all appearances, before 1200, the homily is one of the earliest Icelandic written texts as well as an example of the prose of Christian instruction. The homily composer faced a challenging task of expressing new notions and describing new phenomena with the language which was not used to them, and the solution of this task resembles, on the one hand, the colloquial language of the sagas of Icelanders, while, on the other hand, it is a rather obscure “learned style” seeking to imitate the rhetorical techniques of Latin. It is unknown whether this homily was to be read in front of the audience or was it some sort of an example for a homilist. The latter suggestion is supported by the heterogeneous structure of the “Book” as a whole as well as by the presence of non-liturgical texts in it, whereas the former — by the use of the first-person pronouns and direct addressing the audience. This paper provides a translation of the homily, together with a few introductory remarks.

Each public speech (including the homily) should be associated with showing the right which serves as the basis for accepting the presented statements. This is one of the fundamental features of the correct construction of a statement. The theological content of a homily can be presented on the basis of the classical form of argumentum ex auctoritate. As an inductive structure, this argument may promote specific ways of organising the whole speech. Firstly, in the rhetorical inventio structure, it allows the author to control the semantic coherence of the text. Secondly, in the structure of dis- positio, the authority can make for an interesting use of rhetorical narrative in homily text. Thirdly, argumentum ex auctoritate can be used to build the ethos of the preacher. Thanks to the above proposals, it is possible to influence the processuality of the text, which may determine the recognition and assimilation of the different key elements, both of which are crucial for preaching.
