Reclaimed water from small wastewater treatment facilities in the rural areas of the Beira Interior region (Portugal) may constitute an alternative water source for aquifer recharge. A 21-month monitoring period in a constructed wetland treatment system has shown that 21,500 m3 year−1 of treated wastewater
(reclaimed water) could be used for aquifer recharge. A GIS-based multi-criteria analysis was performed, combining ten thematic maps and economic, environmental and technical criteria, in order to produce a suitability map for the location of sites for reclaimed water infiltration. The areas chosen for aquifer
recharge with infiltration basins are mainly composed of anthrosol with more than 1 m deep and fine sand texture, which allows an average infiltration velocity of up to 1 m d−1. These characteristics will provide a final polishing treatment of the reclaimed water after infiltration (soil aquifer treatment (SAT)),
suitable for the removal of the residual load (trace organics, nutrients, heavy metals and pathogens).
The risk of groundwater contamination is low since the water table in the anthrosol areas ranges from 10 m to 50 m. On the other hand, these depths allow a guaranteed unsaturated area suitable for SAT. An area of 13,944 ha was selected for study, but only 1607 ha are suitable for reclaimed water infiltration.
Approximately 1280 m2 were considered enough to set up 4 infiltration basins to work in flooding and
drying cycles.

Documento Técnico - Se propone generar un Programa Binacional de Monitoreo de las aguas comunes del Río de la Plata (RP), y ha sido elaborado por técnicos de Argentina y Uruguay.
El Grupo Técnico Binacional dio prioridad al restablecimiento de las tres estaciones de monitoreoautónomo que funcionaron entre los años 2008 y 2010, es decir el Pilote Norden, la Torre Oyarvide (actualmente en proceso de relocalización) y la Boya Oceanográfica.
Además de este primer paso, el Programa comprende una segunda etapa complementaria que incluye campañas periódicas para el monitoreo dela calidad del agua del río. Una vez establecidos con precisión los objetivos específicos del monitoreo, se requerirán reuniones entre los técnicos de ambos países para acordar aspectos tales como: los parámetros a medir, los puntos de extracción de muestras y la frecuencia de monitoreo. Más allá de los extensos antecedentes de FREPLATA en este sentido, que incluyeron arribar a Objetivos de Calidad de Aguas Binacionales y Niveles Guías Provisorios de Calidad de Agua, en este trabajo se incluye, a modo de propuesta, un listado de variables a monitorearsugerido por las instituciones de Uruguay, para su discusión a nivel binacional.

RESUMEN El río Tuy, desde 1956, constituye una de las fuentes de abastecimiento hídrico para la región capital y presenta recurrentes problemas de calidad reportados previamente por varios autores. Con el propósito de suministrar información que apoye la toma de decisiones para la gestión integral de la cuenca, se describe la relación entre los patrones de ocupación del territorio y la variación de la calidad del agua en la cuenca media del río Tuy (CMRT). Se analizaron los estudios de caracterización realizados en la CMRT durante el período 1968-2008, y las tendencias en la calidad del agua reportadas fueron contrastadas con los patrones de ocupación territorial, identificables cualitativamente en imágenes aéreas y satelitales de cada zona, considerando las huellas territoriales documentadas. Se identificaron y caracterizaron los siguientes tipos de ocupación territorial: urbanización planificada y no planificada, zonas industriales, zonas agrícolas y embalses. Se encontró que las tendencias en los niveles de contaminación para el río coinciden con las variaciones en el tipo de ocupación y uso de los suelos. El origen de la contaminación es antrópico y alcanza el río debido a fallas en la gestión de la cuenca. Se recomienda implementar medidas efectivas para disminuir el impacto que se producirá en el cuerpo de agua, de continuarse urbanizando la zona como hasta ahora. ABSTRACT Since 1956, the Tuy River is one of the sources of water supply for the capital region and shows recurring problems of quality, previously reported by several authors. In order to provide information to support decision-making for the integral management of the basin, this work describes the relationship between the patterns of occupation of the territory and the variation in the quality of the water in the middle basin of the Tuy River (CMRT). Several CMRT characterization studies during the period 1968-2008 were analyzed. Trends in the quality of the water were compared with the reported patterns of territorial occupation, qualitatively identified by aerial and satellite imagery of each zone, taking into account the territorial footprints documented. We identified and characterized the following types of territorial occupation: planned and unplanned urbanization, industrial areas, agricultural areas and reservoirs. It was found that the trends in levels of pollution for the river coincide with variations in the type of occupation and use of the soils. The source of the contamination is anthropic and reaches the river because of flaws in the management of the basin. It is recommended to implement effective measures to reduce the impact that will occur in the body of water, if the urbanizing area continues as until now.

Diatom indices developed in certain geographic regions are frequently used elsewhere, despite the strong evidence that such metrics are less useful when applied in regions other than that where species–environment relationships were originally assessed, showing that species have particular autoecological requirements in different geographic areas. The goal of this study was to develop a new metric, the Duero Diatom Index (DDI), aimed at monitoring water quality in Duero basin watercourses (NW Spain). In summer 2008 and 2009, a total of 355 epilithic diatom samples were collected following standard protocols. The 2008 samples were used to develop the DDI, whereas the samples collected during 2009 were used in the index testing. Weighted averages method was used to derive the autoecological profiles of diatoms with respect to pH, conductivity, biological oxygen demand, ammonia, nitrates, and phosphates. The optimum and tolerance values for the measured environmental variables were determined for 137 taxa with abundances and frequencies of occurrence above 1 %, and subsequent trophic indicator and sensitivity values were defined for the DDI. The correlation between the observed and the diatom-inferred nutrient concentrations was highest for phosphates (ρ S = 0.72). Significant statistical relationship were observed between DDI values and the chemistry-based General Quality Index values (p = 0.006) and the specific pollution index (SPI) diatom metric (p = 0.04). DDI has demonstrated a better correlation with water chemistry than SPI diatom metric.

El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la relación entre la calidad del agua superficial en la parte alta de la microcuenca del río Poás y las principales presiones socioambientales que pueden alterar este factor. Para ello se realizó un estudio exploratorio, con enfoque cuantitativo, donde se identificaron las principales presiones socioambientales que experimenta el recurso hídrico en la zona. Además, se analizó la calidad del agua superficial a través de indicadores físicos, químicos y microbiólogos, para la aplicación de dos índices de calidad. Se encontraron seis presiones socioambientales de impacto negativo al recurso, materializadas a través de acciones puntuales ejecutadas desde el hogar y otras actividades de tipo socioeconómico. A pesar de que la evidencia mostró cumplimiento mayoritario de los parámetros analizados con los criterios de calidad sugeridos a nivel nacional e internacional, los índices revelaron niveles de contaminación incipiente, además de calidad buena y media. Estadísticamente, se encontró que la calidad del agua de la microcuenca no varía espacialmente; sin embargo, sí lo hace de manera temporal, debido a la incidencia de los patrones de lluvia en la zona. Este hallazgo, en conjunto con la determinación de correlaciones significativas entre los parámetros monitoreados, contribuyó a reconocer que los sitios analizados en época lluviosa mantienen mayor relación con parámetros asociados con contaminación orgánica debido a procesos de escorrentía y descarga de agua residual. Por tanto, se plantea la necesidad de coordinar esfuerzos que garanticen la sostenibilidad de la microcuenca, que mejoren la infraestructura sanitaria local, fortalezcan los procesos de gestión del agua y se dirijan al establecimiento de una red de monitoreo desde un marco de referencia con visión de cuenca.

RESUMEN Se realizó un estudio sobre la cuenca alta del río Chicamocha en Boyacá-Colombia para la construcción de un índice multimétrico con el objetivo de evaluar la calidad ambiental y ecológica de los afluentes y la corriente principal del río Chicamocha. Se evaluaron cuarenta y siete variables entre biológicas, fisicoquímicas e hidráulicas en tres puntos de los ríos Tuta, Jordán y Surba, además de la corriente principal del río Chicamocha. Se seleccionaron nueve variables para la construcción del IELf (Índice de Estado Limnológico Fluvial) puntaje promedio por taxón de invertebrados (ASPT), coliformes totales, porcentaje de saturación de oxígeno disuelto, sólidos disueltos, fosfatos, nitritos, demanda biológica de oxígeno (DBO 5), velocidad media de la corriente y profundidad relativa del cauce. De acuerdo con el IELf, el río de peor calidad fue el Jordán; en contraste, el río Surba presentó una condición aceptable. En general toda la cuenca oscila entre un estado malo y crítico (en época seca) debido a la contaminación difusa (proveniente de diversas fuentes) y a la reducción de los caudales. Por otra parte, al comparar el IELf con otros índices de calidad del agua (ICAs) internacionales y colombianos se concluyó que muestra un buen nivel discriminatorio de las condiciones de calidad ambiental y ecológica de sistemas lóticos andinos, como los de la cuenca alta del río Chicamocha. ABSTRACT A study was carried out on the upper Chicamocha river basin in Boyacá, Colombia for the construction of a multi metric index with the objective of evaluating the environmental and ecological quality of the tributaries and the main current of the Chicamocha River. Forty-seven variables between biological, physicochemical and hydraulic were evaluated at three points of the Tuta, Jordán and Surba rivers, in addition to the main stream of the Chicamocha River. Similarly to most of Mediterranean EU member states, Portugal regularly experience severe water supply and demand imbalances, particularly in the summer months.
Tourism is a very important economic activity in Portugal and is pushing water demand particularly in regions suffering occasional water deficit, like the southern half part of Portugal mainland. Golf courses are an important tourist factor contributing to water demand rising. A number of golf courses are installed in tourist areas and need high amount of water for irrigation.
Water reuse is a very important management strategy in situations of water scarcity. Portugal badly needs to include treated wastewater as a dependable resource in the nation water resources management. Sustainable water reuse requires technical guidelines to ensure the public health and environmental protection but the economic sustainability is crucial for the success of water reuse projects as a strategy of water conservation. This paper briefly presents Portuguese guidelines on water reuse focusing mainly on the aspects to be taken into account in the assessment of the economic viability of water reuse projects, such as the model of tariff structure, the costs to internalise, share of costs among users and recovery of investment costs.

We present a numerical solution for the dead zone model which describes the solute transport in a subsurface and horizontal flow constructed wetland. This model is a system of two mass balance equations for two conceptual areas: the main channel and the storage zone. We use finite difference schemes to determine the numerical solution of the system and we study its convergence by presenting properties related to the stability and accuracy of the schemes. Concerning the experimental results, the magnitude of the longitudinal dispersion and the extension of dead volumes is estimated for clean conditions and after a certain operating period under organic loading conditions. The results showed a considerable amount of longitudinal dispersion through the bed, which was very strong near the feeding point, indicating the occurrence of mixing and significant presence of dead zones and short-circuiting.
