This paper was written for a conference held at Yogjakarta and Semarang (two sites) in 2004, and sponsored by the International Association for the History of Religions (IAHR) and the Indonesian Ministry of Religion (Departemen Agama). In this introductory contribution I reflect on the fact that in different regions of the world there are different models of religious diversity. While these are in some respects quite simple, there are hidden complexities which the specialist in the study of religions needs to elucidate. Such analyses may be of value in the managing of religious harmony (harmoni agama) at the socio-political level.
