There is much hype about the organizational IT project failure rate in both industry and research community. 66 factors of IT project failure are identified based on literature review of conceptual and empirical studies. The IT project failures factors are categorized into 6 categories such as environmental factors, organizational factors, team factors, project factors, technology factors and project management factors. Based on the occurrence of each project failure factor in the collected literature, top-10 Critical Failure Factors (CFFs) of IT projects are identified. The top ten critical failure factors of IT projects include poor project planning, inappropriate estimations, unclear project objectives & goals, lack of senior management involvement, support and commitment, lack of risk management, unrealistic schedules and deadlines, scope creep, project management methodology, ineffective communication, and vague requirements and scope.

ABSTRACT The increasing use of rapid development of digital games project promotes the need for risk identification to assist in the success of these projects. The purpose of this work is to identify risks in rapidly developing projects of digital games, to establish a possible relationship with the risks identified in the literature and propose mitigation of the risks found. The character of the research was exploratory, with the application of a literature review and semi-structured interviews. The results include a list of 19 identified risks, its relationship to literature and 5 proposals for mitigation of identified risks. The theoretical implication is a list of risks to be studied and as practical application is the use of fast development projects in digital games for project managers, team leaders and the like.
Resumo: A crescente utilização de projetos de desenvolvimento rápido de jogos digitais promove a necessidade de identificação de riscos para auxiliar no sucesso destes projetos. O intuito deste trabalho está na identificar os riscos em projetos de desenvolvimento rápido de jogos digitais, em estabelecer uma possível relação com os riscos identificados na literatura e propor mitigações para os riscos encontrados. O caráter da pesquisa foi exploratório, com a aplicação de uma revisão da literatura e entrevistas semi-estruturadas. Os resultados incluem uma lista com 19 riscos identificados, sua relação com a literatura e 5 propostas de mitigações dos riscos identificados. Como implicação teórica estão uma lista de riscos a serem estudados e como aplicação prática está na utilização em projetos de desenvolvimento rápidos em jogos digitais por gerentes de projetos, líderes de equipes e similares.

Risk management has emerged as an important component of projects these days, particularly information technology projects which are complex and dynamic in nature. Risk management constitutes different components and organisations are required to strategies it keeping in mind different dimensions of IT projects. The present study aims to review the types of risk in IT projects and subsequently recommended the innovative and dynamic ways to overcome it. IT projects are generally characterised by scheduling, cost and performance risk. Organizations by having risk management strategies in place such as avoidance, transference, mitigation and acceptance in place can identify, analyze, prioritize and mitigate risk factors. A survey of 100 team members of IT projects and interview with 5 team managers showed that risk management and risk factors such as scheduling risk and cost risk have an impact on firm performance and also there is presence of barriers in the process risk management.
