"Résumé : À partir des écrits pédagogiques du pasteur-pédagogue Gauthey (1795-1864), cet article s’interroge sur la légitimité, l’objet et la nature des « récompenses » dans un dispositif d’éducation populaire. Comparées aux positions des jansénistes (Cornelius Jansen, 1585-1638) et des jésuites (Ignace de Loyola, 1491-1556), sur la cartographie de l’histoire des courants pédagogiques, quelles sont les caractéristiques de cette théorie protestante des récompenses préconisée au XIXe siècle par Gauthey pour les écoles du dimanche françaises. Permet-elle de confirmer l’hypothèse de la doctrine du serf arbitre comme levier d’une pédagogie pro-récompenses ?
Abstract : Grounding itself in the writings on the art of teaching of the pastor and pedagogue L.-F. F. Gauthey (1795-1864), this article examines the aptness, the goal and the nature of « rewards » in the delivery of popular education. Compared to Jansenist positions (Cornelius Jansen, 1585-1638), as well as to Jesuit (Ignatius of Loyola, 1491-1556), what, on the graph of the history of teaching methods, are the characteristics of this Protestant reward-theory, developed in the 19th century by Gauthey for French Sunday schools ? Does it allow us to confirm the hypothesis of the doctrine of the incapacity of free will as the trigger of a pro-reward teaching method ?"
