Jean Vigo

This article compares two cinematic representations of barge life: the uplifting Poetic Realism of Jean Vigo's L'Atalante (1934) and the Existential dreariness of David Mackenzie's Young Adam (2003), adapted from the Scottish Beat novel by Alexander Trocchi (1954). What is the relationship between the flow of the barge on the river, and the mechanisms of the cinematic apparatus?

My review essay of Jean-Luc Godard's profound, passionately detached audiovisual work <Le livre d'image>(2018/2019) aka <The Image Book>. 

In contradistinction to the tempting yet rather conventional attempt to recycle the idea of 'archive' along the lines of <Histoire(s) du cinéma>, I chose to render manifest the lush legacy of Jean Rouch whose pioneering attempt at 'Ethno-fiction' is here recalibrated- in conjunction with Yervant Gianikian & Angela Ricci Lucchi's 'archeological probe'- in the midst of the Arab Spring's bitter aftermath and global islamophobia- or, the so-called 'the global civil war.'

Más de medio siglo ha pasado desde el estreno de L´Atalante de Jean Vigo (1934), filme que consumió el último aliento de la quebradiza salud de su director. Vigo no vivió los avatares que su único largometraje experimentó luego de su muerte, cuando la productora Gaumont mutilara y cambiara el montaje original para hacerla más atractiva. Renombrada Le chaland qui passe y con una ligera cancioncilla de moda incluida, el filme no tuvo el éxito que se esperaba. L´Atalante vivió en las sombras hasta que en los años 50 los cineclubes franceses comienza a dimensionar la figura de su creador y 57 años después –en 1985- se recupera una copia del metraje original sin editar y se realiza una reconstrucción fiel a su visión. 

"L’Atalante" è stato a lungo considerato il film più rappresentativo di Jean Vigo, l’opera conclusiva interpretata spesso come un film-testamento. Eppure, tutta la produzione di Vigo vive di una tensione primaverile e aurorale e il suo ultimo film rimane ancora oggi un’opera sfuggente, sintesi imperfetta di tensioni storiche, estetiche e figurative che in parte si rifanno alla cinematografia francese degli anni Venti e Trenta, ma in parte anticipano la germinazione delle nouvelles vagues internazionali a venire. Film manifesto della cinefilia di tutti i tempi, osannato e omaggiato da più generazioni di critici, cinefili e registi (da Buñuel a Truffaut, da Bertolucci a Temple, da Kusturica a Carax, fino a Gondry e McQueen), "L’Atalante" vive di una unicità ed esemplarità costitutive, al crocevia fra momenti caratteristici della storia del cinema e differenti concezioni del mezzo cinematografico. Questo libro indaga tale singolarità, attraverso un approccio interdisciplinare che coniuga le esegesi storico-critiche accumulatesi negli anni con uno studio nuovo e circostanziato, senza trascurare gli strumenti dell’analisi storiografica.

Lors de sa présentation avant la projection d'À propos de Nice, le 14 juin 1930 au Vieux-Colombier à Paris, Jean Vigo lance le concept du « point de vue documenté » pour esquisser et défendre l'idée d'un documentaire social. Nous pourrions nous étonner de l'audace de ce jeune cinéaste, qui ne présente que son premier film, à donner un programme pour l'avenir d'un certain cinéma, un cinéma social. Mais, cette audace est caractéristique de cette période de la fin des années 20 et le début des années 30, une période charnière pour le cinéma du point de vue esthétique, technologique et économique : la fin d'un certain cinéma d'avant-garde, l'avènement du cinéma sonore, la création des ciné-clubs, la crise économique… Une période charnière, aussi, pour le documentaire qui n'est qu'à ses débuts. Le petit texte programmatique de Jean Vigo recèle beaucoup d'éléments de cette histoire.

The figure of Jean Vigo is, even today, interpreted through a characteristic dichotomy that connects the curse with sanctification. In fact, his cinema is pervaded by a constitutive dialectic that implies desire and lack (L'Atalante), oppression and liberation (Zéro de conduite), challenge and harmony (Taris), lyricism and grotesque (À propos de Nice). The article examines the filmography of the director focusing on the motif of the body: iconographic and generative fulcrum of the dynamics of desire and fear in relation to hierarchical, social and spatial constraints.

The established theories of modernity and its aesthetic response, modernism, are notoriously slippery concepts that seem to require a significant amount of analysis across genders, generations, and geographical borders. This is made evident by the vast breadth of writers who have attempted to grapple with these topics, as well as, crucially, the wide variety of filmmakers who have, over time, articulated their own ideas about the evasive ‘modern’. Three essential examples of cinematic modernism can be found in the mid-twentieth century works of Jean Vigo and Satyajit Ray, each of which addresses modernity’s relentless march through exceptionally distinct cultural lenses, but through the same institution: marriage.

Resumo:
A analisa dos filmes de Jean Vigo busca entender suas formas de ver e dar a ver o mundo. Seus filmes trazem
questões sobre a modernidade que nos ajudam a pensar o mundo no qual vivemos. O objetivo desta comunicação é, ao analisar esses filmes, buscar sentidos possíveis para o pensamento do diretor sobre o universo que filma e com o qual se relaciona, ou como Vigo concebe e apresenta seu pensamento, em particular suas ideias de "pessimismo revolucionário", "resistência" e "liberdade".


Abstract:
The study of Jean Vigo’s films wants to understand their ways to see and to show the word. His films present questions about modernity which help us to analyze our world. The objective of this communication is to find possible senses in director’s thoughts about the universe of the film and its relations, or the way as Vigo feels and presents us his thoughts, principally his ideas about “revolutionary pessimism”, “resistance” and “liberty”.

André Bazin, lors du lancement du livre de Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes Jean Vigo, affirmait : « Toute réflexion sur L’Atalante maintenant partira de ce livre. La vraie connais- sance de Jean Vigo commence. » (Esprit, 1958). Cette affirma- tion serait déjà une bonne raison pour que je dialogue avec cette monographie célèbre – considérée aujourd’hui encore comme une référence fondamentale dans la littérature sur Jean Vigo – en la prenant comme point de départ pour quelques considérations sur L ́Atalante. Par coïncidence, mon article, écrit pour une conférence qui a cherché à mettre en évidence « l ́univers de la cinéphilie franco-brésilienne » est publié en 2016 , un an après que nous ayons célébré le cente- naire de la naissance de Sales Gomes. Par conséquent, reve- nir sur le texte de Sales Gomes est aussi un juste hommage à un Brésilien important, dont la passion pour l’œuvre de Vigo, non seulement l’a projeté sur la scène internationale comme un érudit spécialiste de la vie et de l’œuvre du cinéaste, mais également, entre autres choses, lui a permis de travailler aux côtés de Panfilo Colaperte et d’Henri Langlois à la restauration de la version L’Atalante de 1950 5. Néanmoins, ce ne sont pas seulement ces faits qui me conduisent à présenter ces considérations sur L ́Atalante et la nouvelle littéraire intitulée Deux fois avec Hélèna 6. Il y a une seconde raison, qui est que ce grand critique cinématographique et intellectuel brésilien a écrit là, un texte de fiction singulier qui selon moi, quand on l’étudie comparativement au dernier film de Vigo, peut amener des questions très pertinentes sur la relation entre la littérature, le cinéma et la mythologie qui embrasse nos objets de désir et de délectation esthétique. Ainsi, si d’un côté, mon étude de certains aspects du film et de la construction du personnage de Juliette dans L’Atalante sera ancrée dans l’analyse qu’en propose Sales Gomes, de l’autre, j’analyserai aussi le personnage d’Helena, dans la nouvelle Deux fois avec Helena, en proposant un parallèle entre la construction de ces deux personnages féminins chez Vigo et Sales Gomes.

« Un après-midi du début d’août, [Jean Vigo] alla acheter des lacets pour les bottines d’Almereyda » (Salles Gomes 1957 : 29-30). Cette phrase, jetée par Paulo Emilio Salles Gomes sous une forme apparemment accidentelle dans un paragraphe où elle ne se lie nullement à ce qui vient avant ou après, est pourtant une suggestion choquante que Jean Vigo aurait involontairement tué son père, Miguel Almereyda, dont l’assassin se servit de ces lacets pour l’étrangler en prison. Cette phrase fait une première apparition dans le livre Vigo dit Almereyda, de Salles Gomes, dont il ne reste de nos jours que la traduction en portugais ; et elle est reprise telle quelle par l’auteur dans le chapitre abrégé de ce livre au début de Jean Vigo, sa célèbre biographie du cinéaste. Dans ce texte, je vais focaliser sur la figure du parricide comme ingrédient voilé mais central de l’approche biographique de Salles Gomes, avec laquelle il nous fait entrevoir les contradictions inhérentes à son projet de combiner biographie, fiction et analyse d’art. Elles dérivent surtout du fait que la prémisse conservatrice de l’héritage patrilinéaire, grâce à laquelle toute l’œuvre de Vigo se change en hommage au père anarchiste absent, doit constamment faire place à la défense de l’avant-garde libertaire et antiautoritaire. En même temps, c’est grâce à ces contradictions que l’on découvre le dilemme au cœur même du cinéma d’auteur, pas encore né au moment où la biographie de Vigo est achevée en 1952, mais que Salles Gomes prévoit avec une étonnante clarté : le besoin de tuer le « cinéma de papa » et toutes les figures paternelles étouffantes, tout en cherchant des substituts du père absent, un processus démontré de manière exemplaire par l’héritier majeur de Vigo, François Truffaut, dans ses films ainsi que dans sa relation avec le père de la théorie du cinéma, André Bazin.

La relación entre el cine y el anarquismo es muy temprana, sobre
todo si consideramos que desde sus comienzos el cine no fue muy popular. Sus precursores, personajes inquietos e inventores de sus propios proyectores, pensaban en el cine como un espectáculo. La primera proyección en 1895, gracias a los hermanos Lumière, mostraba el mar o la llegada de un tren. Nada más. Los hermanos  Lumière no creían que fuera una técnica con mucho futuro.

From the fleetingly captured street scenes of the city symphony, to the meticulously reconstructed studio city of musical comedies; from the propagandistic Popular Front documentaries about construction workers, to poetic realism’s bittersweet portraits of populist neighborhoods: Social Architecture explores the construction, representation and experience of spaces and places in documentary and realist films of the French 1930s. In this book, Margaret C. Flinn tracks the relation between the emergent techniques of French sound cinema and its thematic, social and political preoccupations through analysis of discourse in contemporary press, theoretical texts and through readings of films themselves. New light is shed on works of canonical directors such as Renoir, Clair, Vigo and Duvivier by their consideration in relationship to little known documentary films of the era. Flinn argues that film has a readable architecture—a configuration of narrative and representations that informs, explains, and creates social identities, while reflecting upon the position of individuals within their societies.

Filmy Jeana Vigo są zaliczane w teorii filmowej do słabego strumienia kina anarchistycznego.  Jedną z trudności, aby określić termin „kino anarchistyczne” jest oparta na problemie zdefiniowania samego anarchizmu. Podczas gdy cześć badaczy możliwie szeroko definiuje kino anarchistyczne , włączając do tego nurtu filmy reżyserów lewicowych, takich jak bliscy anarchizmowi i liberalizmowi „nominalni maoiści” (Jean –Luc Godard), podkreślają jednak, że kino nurtu anarchistycznego musi w jakiś konkretny i czytelny sposób odnosić się do anarchistycznej tradycji, do myśli Maxa Stirnera, Michała Bakunina, Piotra Kropotkina, inni (Porton, White, Christie) są zdania, że podstawową cechą kina anarchistycznego jest przede wszystkim przekaz idei bliskich anarchizmowi, nie zaś osoba twórcy czy „anarchistyczna estetyka”. Reżyser Jean Vigo był anarchistą. Źródłem jego anarchistycznych tropów i sympatii była postać jego ojca Miquela Almereydy, znanego anarchisty, którego postać syn zmitologizował i na tak skonstruowanym micie stworzył własną mitologię anarchizmu, opartą na osobach związanych z anarchizmem ( Almereyda, Ferrer, Malatesta) jak i na gestach, słowach ( Y’a la merde) oraz kulcie buntu. Roland Barthes definiuje mit jako „system porozumiewania się”. Barthes pisał, że „nośnikiem mowy mitycznej może być niemal każde medium: mowa, pismo, fotografia, film, reportaż, sport, widowisko, reklama”. Takim „nośnikiem mowy mitycznej” są filmy Jeana Vigo, a jego specyficzny sposób ukazujący rzeczywistość, skupiając się na określonych przedmiotach i relacjach, tworzy nowy przekaz, odwołujący się do idei anarchistycznych i z ich perspektywy „bada” ( w greckim sensie słowa krinein) rzeczywistość.
