Coffee, of whose origin and birthplace generally presented as Yemen in sources , started to exist in Ottoman Empire’s social life in the 16 th century.It led too much debate in the capital of the Empire.According to many scholars, it was evaluated for ‘pleasure’.While some scholars considered coffee as ‘haram/forbidden’, the others considered it as ‘halal’. Classical poem received a grant from all these discussions. Coffee, which was named ‘black water’ by the opponents while it was supported by the addicted poets, gained legitimacy over time.Its adventure managed to attract the attention of the researchers. As well as the academic publications, it is possible to reach a lot of information about the production, history and the effects on our culture in popular style. In this article, after giving a general information about coffee, it will be specified how various poets dealt with it in the light of classical Turkish poetry. Then, it will be given the full text of ‘Hikâye-i İcad-ı Kahve-i Yemen’ which is registered İstanbul Research Institute Rado Manuscripts at number ŞR_000475/01.
