Konstanz

Neither of the two houses in Constance belonging to the collegiate chapter of Bischofszell served as its official city seat. Using the example of the house zur Krone, the essay explores the social environment of a canon and his connection to the collegiate’s seat. In 1311, Konrad, a doctor and a canon of the collegiate chapter, bestowed his house (zur Krone) on the collegiate church in return for a life annuity. Konrad resided not at Bischofszell itself but rather in the episcopal city, where he established a library for research purposes, which, along with the house, he reserved in usufruct. On the other hand, the example of the House zum Riesen, which from 1323 until into the nineteenth century was held in copyhold permits questions concerning the chapter’s administrative and archival practices to be discussed. It can be shown that beginning in the 15th century the importance of property in Constance to the collegiate chapter diminished steadily. This loss in importance is reflected in the property holdings of various priors and custodians in Constance as well as the places of origin of the canons. Taken together, these findings show that from the late fifteenth century onward, it is only possible to speak of circumstantial ties between the collegiate chapter of Bischofszell and the episcopal city.

THE BATTLE AROUND LAŠVA

Summary

Recent history- and military history books speak very shortly about the battle around Lašva in 1415. Some Hungarian experts of the period (Pál Engel, Elemér Mályusz, Ferenc Szakály, Lajos Thallóczy), as well as their Southern Slav fellows (Sima Ćirković and Vjekaslav Klaić) refer to the Hungarian defeat in 1415, but none of them has gone into detailed research.
The present paper endeavors to explore the events and circumstances of the battle around Lašva, using the help of available charters and narrative sources. In addition to presenting the antecedents and the preparations of both parties (Hungarians and Bosnians), it attempts to determine the date and location of the battle. When exploring the size of the opposing armies, Turkish and Bosnian troops are analyzed together. The end of the paper discusses the international consequences of and reactions to the events around Lašva.
The annex contains a chart listing the people who took part of the battle around Lašva.



LA BATAILLE DANS LES ENVIRONS DE LAŠVA EN 1415

Résumé

Les sciences historiques et militaire contemporaines ne sont pas loquaces sur la bataille qui sʼest déroulée dans les environs de Lašva en 1415. Les chercheurs hongrois (Pál Engel, Elemér Mályusz, Ferenc Szakály et Lajos Thallóczy) et slaves du Sud (Sima Ćirković et Vjekaslav Klaić) qui sʼoccupent de cette époque ne font que mentionner la défaite de 1415 des Hongrois sans procéder à une analyse plus en détail.
La présente étude cherche à examiner les événements et les circonstances de cette bataille sur la base de diplômes et de sources narratives. Elle présente les préparatifs des parties belligérantes hongroise et bosniaque et tente de déterminer la date et le lieu de la bataille. Elle examine les effectifs des armées adverses en analysant ensemble les troupes turques et bosniaques. Pour finir, lʼétude décrit les conséquences internationales de la bataille près de Lašva.
Le tableau en annexe de lʼétude fait apparaître les personnes ayant participé à cette bataille.

Resümee

Die heutige Militär- und Geschichtswissenschaft formuliert ziemlich wortkarg, wenn es um die Schlacht bei Lašva im Jahre 1415 geht. Die Erforscher der Zeit –Pál Engel, Elemér Mályusz, Ferenc Szakály und Lajos Thallóczy – verweisen zwar ähnlich ihren südslawischen Kollegen Sima Ćirković und Vjekaslav Klaić auf die ungarische Niederlage im Jahre 1415, lassen sich jedoch nicht auf detailliertere Untersuchungen ein.



Die vorliegende Studie versucht mit Hilfe der zur Verfügung stehenden urkundlichen und epischen Quellen die Ereignisse und Umstände der Schlacht bei Lašva zu untersuchen, wobei die Vorbereitung der beiden Gegner – Ungarn und Bosnier – und deren Vorgeschichte vorgestellt werden. Es wird der Versuch unternommen, den Zeitpunkt und den Ort der Schlacht zu bestimmen. Untersucht wird auch die Stärke der einander gegenüberstehenden Heere, wobei in diesem Teil die türkischen und bosnischen Truppen gemeinsam analysiert werden. Am Ende der Studie finden wir die Folgen und das Weiterleben der Ereignisse bei Lašva in internationalem Kreis.
In der Tabelle, die der Studie beigefügt ist, wurden die in der Schlacht bei Lašva teilnehmenden Personen angeführt.




БИТВА ПРИ МЕСТЕЧКЕ ЛАШВА

Резюме

Современная военная и историческая наука весьма немногословно отзываются о битве, которая произошла в районе местечка Лашва в 1415 году. Исследователи этой эпохи – Пал Энгель, Элемер Майус, Ференц Сакай и Лайош Таллоци делают напоминания о поражении венгров в 1415 году, так же, как и их южно-славянские коллеги Сима Чиркович и Векаслав Клаич, но более подробные анализы не производят.
Настоящая работа с помощью имеющихся в распоряжении дипломных и повествова- тельных источников старается проанализировать события и условия битвы в районе Лашвы, показывая при этом подготовку обеих сторон – венгров и боснийцев – и предшествующие этому события. Автор пытается определить дату и точное место битвы. Определяется величина противостоящих войск, здесь дается совместный анализ турецких и боснийских войск. В конце статьи дается анализ последствий событий, происшедших возле местечка Лашва, и показывается, как продолжалась жизнь дальше.
К статье в виде приложения составлена таблица, в которой указаны лица, принявшие участие в битве при Лашве.

In the case of the city of Constance we are well equiped with sources concerning food and dietary questions. Archaeological excavations of early 15th century latrines and dumps of refuse thrown in the Lake of Constance revealed a rich assortment of both animal bones and botanical fi nds. Vivid paintings of fishmonger‘s and butcher‘s stalls, provision transports and snack bars seem to illustrate everyday life in 15th century southwest Germany. These paintings stem from a chronicle describing the events during the council of Constance 1414-1418, written by Ulrich Richental. The text gives a wide variety of informations concerning markets, merchandises, prices and wages, it describes picknicks as well as banquets, and tells sundry stories. The municipal archive owns a vast amount of records, many of which are published: tax rolls, city deeds, wills, codices of all sorts and court documents. Those written sources allow us to identify owners, landlords or tenants of most houses, they give account of taxes, debts and rents to pay. Thus, they allow us, too, to identify the users of the latrines ...
This excellent base of sources could provide us with a great amount of information about food and its consumers in the 15th century - hitherto unexploited.

Die Arbeit vergleicht die Beziehungen der drei sich von ihren Bischöfen emanzipierenden Städte zum Königtum und den für weite Teile des 14. Jahrhunderts häufig in Antagonismus zum Königtum stehenden Habsburger. Dabei wurde der Fokus einerseits auf den Charakter, und damit verbunden die Intensität der Beziehungen gelegt, andererseits Strategien des Umgangs betrachtet. Die Arbeit konnte herausarbeiten, dass die Intensität der Beziehungen drei Städte zum Königtum höchst unterschiedlich war. Trotz der größten rechtlichen Unabhängigkeit pflegte Straßburg den intensivsten Kontakt mit dem Reichsoberhaupt. Zugleich besaßen die drei Städte aber auch einen unterschiedlich großen politischen Gestaltungsspielraum für ihre Politik gegenüber dem Königtum. Sie nutzten diesen, um regionale Bündnisse mit Städten, aber auch Adligen einzugehen. Während Konstanz insbesondere die Zusammenarbeit mit den Bodenseestädten suchte, kooperierte Basel – neben einer für weite Teile des 14. Jahrhunderts charakteristischen Zusammenarbeit mit Straßburg – aktiv mit den Habsburgern und besaß zumindest bis in die 1380er Jahre eine deutlich engere Bindung zu den Habsburgern als zum Reichsoberhaupt.
