Kwa Languages

Cette étude porte sur les aspects morphosyntaxiques et sémantiques des proverbes bron, principalement le bron de Côte d’Ivoire. Elle a pour particularité de lever le voile sur les mécanismes de construction et d’interprétation de ces énoncés réservés aux initiés et aux amateurs de « l’art discursif ». Au niveau morphosyntaxique, l’analyse prend appui sur le cadre théorique de la Grammaire Générative. Les données empiriques nous ont permis de relever d’une part, divers modes de créations lexicales, en l’occurrence la dérivation par préfixation, par suffixation, et par relèvement tonale, la composition nominale et verbale (l’incorporation), les slogans, la lexicalisation, les noms mythiques et les onomatopées.
D’autre part, l’on a décelé les différentes têtes fonctionnelles rencontrées tant dans les structures simples que complexes, et les mouvements syntaxiques qu’elles suscitent. Aussi, avons-nous fait cas des marques aspectuelles régissant la description des procès avec les valeurs explicites ou implicites qu’elles portent. La deuxième partie nous a donné, par le biais des théories vériconditionnelle et pragmatique, de montrer que les locuteurs bron ont recours à des présuppositions sémantiques et pragmatiques, ou à des implicatures conversationnelles dans l’interprétation des proverbes. Cela nous a conduit à une réévaluation des aspects, partant de l’idée que le Télos contribue à cette interprétation. Nous terminons l’étude par une typologie des énoncés proverbiaux selon les quatre (4) critères qui se dégagent des particularités que révèlent l’ensemble de l’analyse.

Linguistique et Langues Africaines (LLA) [African Languages and Linguistics] is an international journal for African linguistics, whose main goal is to contribute to a better knowledge of languages spoken in Sub-Saharan Africa, be they vernacular, vehicular or creole, with the exception of local varieties of European languages. We are open to recent trends and all theoretical approaches. The selected articles may be chiefly concerned with linguistic domains (e.g. phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicography and semantics), or include an anthropological component. Contributions providing comparative or typological approaches are also welcome. Junior researchers (e.g. PhD students) are encouraged to submit their contributions to LLA.

Linguistique et Langues Africaines is particularly interested in publishing analyses based on fieldwork data as well as studies relating to little documented or endangered languages and cultures. The journal is also open to contributions that are less concerned with theory, such as working documents or firsthand data; such research will appear in a special “notes and documentation” section. Our journal also includes book reviews.

The languages of the journal are English and French, as well as other major European languages (please consult the editors). Submissions to “Linguistique et Langues Africaines” undergo a double-blind peer review by experts who are not members of the editorial board.

The second issue of our journal is scheduled for the end of 2016.

Cette étude se propose de réexaminer la classification des verbes bron. Pour ce faire, elle part du constat que les critères formels ne suffisent pas à les typifier ; en témoigne la proposition de Timyan (1981) qui ne permet pas de rendre compte des verbes polysémiques et synonymiques. Alors, l’hypothèse que des critères sémantiques s’imposent dans l’exercice typologique de ces verbes, nous a conduit à les revisiter selon les traits de la télicité et du dynamisme. De prime abord, on en déduit quatre (4) classes, à savoir, [+Télique], [-Télique], [+Dynamique] et [-Dynamique]. Toutefois, ces traits sont combinables, pour donner lieu à trois (3) classes que sont : la classe des verbes [+Télique, +Dyn.], celle des verbes [+Télique -Dyn.] et celle des [-Télique, -Dyn.]. De plus, c’est cette combinaison qui donne à un verbe même verbe, d’être polysémique ou à deux verbes distincts, d’être synonymiques. En d’autres termes, en bron, les relations combinatoires entre les traits de télicité et de dynamisme justifient l’ambivalence d’un verbe ou le rapprochement sémantique entre deux verbes.

This paper presents a description of the vowel harmony system of Akposso (Uwi), a Kwa
language of Ghana and Togo, one of only a handful of Kwa languages with a complete ten vowel
system with ATR harmony. However, the tenth vowel, /
/, does not function as the harmonic
counterpart of the low [-ATR] central vowel /a/ in affixes as it does in other ten vowel languages
with cross-height vowel harmony systems. Rather, in some instances /a/ alternates with /e/ in
[+ATR] contexts, while in other instances it surfaces invariably as /a/ in both [-ATR] and
[+ATR] contexts. Formant measurements show the [+ATR] central vowel occupying the mid
area of acoustic space, thus adding some support to the view that [+ATR] central vowels in ATR
harmony systems are phonetically non-low rather than low, the more widely-assumed position.
Although vowel harmony applies to a significant number of affixes, especially in the verb
morphology, there are interesting limitations on how far harmony extends.

This article examines the forms and functions of conditional clauses in Tuwuli, a Kwa language spoken in South-Eastern Ghana. It reveals how the traditional categories of conditionals (e.g. hypothetical, counterfactual, concessive) do not match up very well with the formal categories found in Tuwuli, and attempts to provide semantic characterisations for each distinct construction. The article also investigates the distribution and functions of conditional clauses in Tuwuli discourse, showing how some text types and genres use conditionals much more than others, and in some cases, for quite distinct purposes.

На материале языка акебу рассматриваются конструкции с номинализацией, аргу­ менты при которой имеют нулевое или прономинализованное выражение. Приме­ чательная особенность данных конструкций состоит в поведении прямого объекта, который может выражаться нулем или местоимением только в отсутствие других выраженных аргументов, что говорит в пользу большей его интегрированности с номинализованным предикатом. Любопытным образом устроены конструкции с топикализацией внутри номинализованной клаузы, основная часть которых без вынесенной именной группы похожа на простые конструкции с прономинализаци­ ей. При этом в топикализованной конструкции требуется обязательное нулевое вы­ражение одного из аргументов и при трехместных предикатах свободно допускает­ ся прономинализация всех трех ядерных актантов.

Wilson (2003, 2006) argues that unbounded spreading is, by nature, myopic. Subsequent work has shown that bounded harmonies like metaphony may exhibit non-myopic properties (Walker 2010). In this paper we present data from Tutrugbu, showing that, counter to Wilson’s claim, unbounded regressive ATR harmony in the language is not myopic. We show that low vowels conditionally block harmony depending on the height of the word-initial vowel. Since the realization of a medial low vowel depends on both the [ATR] value of the following vowel and the height of the initial vowel, which may occur a significant distance to the left of the conditional blocker, harmony must have access to the entire string and not just the local target vowel. We present an analysis of this non-myopic harmony using a local spreading in tandem with non-local correspondence to model this complex harmony pattern.

The following paper contributes to the study of procedural discourse through the examination of the elements distinguishing mainline from supportive material in Akposso procedural texts and by comparing these elements to those found in Akposso narrative and expository discourse.  Furthermore, this study investigates the role that mainline features and discourse type play in determining the presence or absence of certain conjunctions, notably mɛ and kʊ,  in Akposso narrative, procedural and expository discourse.  Results indicate that these conjunctions occur with differing frequency in each of these discourse types.  Texts are examined both qualitatively and quantitatively for factors that help to determine the use of one conjunction over another, focusing primarily, on mɛ.  Qualitative analysis of these texts relies theoretically upon the Longacre model of discourse as presented in Longacre 1996 and upon Rhetorical Structure Theory as presented in Mann and Thompson 1988.
