Abstract:
Nel 1968 il critico d’arte inglese Lawrence Alloway terminava The Venice Biennale 1895-1968. From salon to goldfish bowl sostenendo che fosse urgente che la Biennale elaborasse un “sistema di controllo” sulle mostre che risolvesse la sua complessa “struttura cellulare”. E’ in questo punto che cronologicamente si innesta questa ricerca: la crisi istituzionale e funzionale della Biennale giunse al culmine diventando la causa che ne fece l’obiettivo della contestazione sessantottina e il radicale rinnovamento richiesto dalla società civile si espresse nella riforma dello statuto “democratico e antifascista” del 1973. L’ipotesi di questa ricerca è che quel “sistema di controllo” sia stato trovato e testato con l’edizione del 1976 e che questo non sia altro che il frutto delle irripetibili esperienze civili e culturali realizzate all’interno e intorno alla Biennale immediatamente dopo la contestazione.

In 1968 the art critic Lawrence Alloway ended The Venice Biennale 1895-1968. From salon to goldfish bowl asserting that it was necessary that Venice Biennale worked out a “control system” on its exhibitions in order to solve its complex “cellular structure”. It is in this very moment that this research inserts itself chronologically. The institutional and functional crisis came to the apex in 1968 when the Biennale became the target of the protests for these reasons. The quest for a radical renewal of the cultural institution coming from civil society, finally expressed itself in the 1973 “democratic and antifascist” reform. This research hypothesis is that the “control system” on the exhibitions has found and tested in occasion of 1976 Biennale and that it was the result of all the civil and cultural experiences developed soon after ’68 protests in and around the Venice Biennale.

This is the second chapter of the book "Just Another Exhibition. Histories and Politics of Biennials" (Postemdiabooks, Milano 2011 co-authored with F. Martini). The book intends to set the biennials within the framework of the history of exhibitions, in order to observe the transformations of recent curatorial practice in relation to the issue of internationality and national representation. The second chapter examines the 1976 Biennale, as a point of rupture in the history of the Venice Biennale, since it marks the beginning of theme-based exhibitions as a solution to the fragmented exhibition space brought about by national pavilions.

The discovery of unpublished documents in the ASAC (contemporary art archives) in Venice has at last made it possible to reconstruct the first Italian Courbet retrospective at the Venice Biennale of 1910, its public and critical reception, and how the painter’s work was seen between 1910 and 1919. In addition, Courbet’s fortunes in Italy are interwoven with those of Roberto Longhi, who in the wake of his pioneering studies of Caravaggio and the Seicento was immediately drawn to the master of realism, and whose earliest writings established a parallel between the two artists. Courbet’s name appears throughout Longhi’s career, shaping the evolution of how he wrote the history of art, from his initial re ections to his maturity.

Nel “clima di profonda riflessione sullo statuto dell’arte e del significato del fare arte in rapporto alla società”, la Biennale di Venezia del 1974 rappresenta un momento centrale. Assente dalla sequenza numerica cronologica alla pari delle biennali di guerra e dunque non considerata un’edizione ufficiale, la Biennale del 1974 segna invece l’inizio di una nuova stagione ed è storicamente la prima a far intendere in quale modo la Biennale post-sessantottina riformata intendesse operare.
Questo intervento intende gettare luce e dare un ruolo centrale a questa edizione nella narrazione della storia culturale degli anni Settanta italiani.
Alla sua prima comparsa dalla proclamazione della riforma avvenuta nel luglio del 1973, la Biennale è consapevole di essere incaricata di mostrare la profonda trasformazione del rapporto tra arte e società che aveva scosso la cultura con il Sessantotto. Intervenire dialetticamente nella realtà culturale, significava affrontare in termini articolati la realtà dell’operare artistico contemporaneo verso un’utilizzazione sociale dell’arte. In questo quadro, le questioni culturali assumevano una dimensione di massa, ponendo alla cultura e alle sue istituzioni la questione urgente di una diversa funzione e di un diverso uso sociale.
La Biennale “democratica e antifascista” presieduta da Carlo Ripa di Meana, decide di partire proprio dalla “straordinaria ricchezza” e dalle “novità avanzatissime” che segnarono le lotte sociali italiane, per dimostrare come non tutte le istituzioni fossero autoritarie e repressive. Attraverso il decentramento, la dichiarata presa di posizione sociale e politica, l’accoglienza dei movimenti, la ricerca di un nuovo pubblico e di nuovi spazi, la Biennale del 1974 creò uno spazio aperto, libero da censura, democratico e profondamente rispondente al suo tempo che istituzionalizzò le pratiche artistiche e intellettuali emerse con il Sessantotto.

Tempi interessanti, quelli in cui viviamo: citando l'antico detto cinese, da alcuni interpretato come una maledizione, il titolo della Biennale 2019 descrive con disincanto l'epoca attuale. Persino Albert Camus ha definito "époque intéressante" un periodo complicato e burrascoso. "Like it or not, we live in interesting times. They are times of danger and uncertainty; but they are also the most creative of any time in the history of mankind": il brano, tratto da un discorso di Robert Kennedy del 1966, ricorre a un eufemismo per indicare l'incertezza e la turbolenza di un particolare momento storico, ricco di grandi cambiamenti. Egli, però, legge nella complessità un'opportunità da cogliere, sottolineando ciò che di buono può scaturire da una fase difficile: ogni crisi conduce potenzialmente a una sorta di "resilienza creativa", che sfocia in forme di particolare genialità e innovazione. I battenti della Biennale sono prossimi alla chiusura, prevista per il 24 novembre; a chi non l'avesse ancora visitata consiglierei, compatibilmente con la tragica situazione della città, martoriata da due giorni da una marea eccezionale e distruttiva, di programmare almeno due giorni a Venezia per non perdersi l'edizione a mio avviso più interessante degli ultimi anni. Il curatore Ralph Rugoff-con l'inedita formula che prevede l'esposizione di varie opere dello stesso artista, spesso molto diverse fra loro-offre visioni poliedriche e mai arroganti, capaci di stimolare la dialettica e non di fornire risposte preconfezionate e propone al visitatore una prospettiva quanto mai ampia, sfaccettata e insolita del lavoro di ognuno. Rugoff, assumendo l'incarico con capacità inventiva rivoluzionaria, non trascura le inquietudini che, come individui, affrontiamo ogni giorno vivendo l'articolata e multiforme contemporaneità; l'insinuazione del dubbio, l'assenza di certezze granitiche, l'uso di un linguaggio ironico e giocoso danno forma all'insolita visione che ne contraddistingue il lavoro rispetto a quello dei suoi predecessori e mette in discussione ogni cliché. Essenzialmente, questa è la Biennale dell'ambiguità e dell'ironia, dell'arte scesa dal piedistallo in un momento storico complesso e inquieto, in cui le mille facce contraddittorie della comunicazione, le fake news e le ultra fedeli indistinguibili riproduzioni del reale offrono visioni quanto mai distorte della realtà.

Tempi interessanti, quelli in cui viviamo: citando l’antico detto cinese, da alcuni interpretato come una maledizione, il titolo della Biennale 2019 descrive con disincanto l’epoca attuale.....

In questo scritto i miei commenti e le mie riflessioni su un'opera che ha risvegliato il mio interesse e che ha permesso collegamenti con alcuni aspetti del vivere contemporaneo.

Venice Biennale is indisputably referred as the pioneering actor in the network created by growing numbers of large-scale international exhibitions. With a history of over a hundred years, Venice Biennale asserts a perennial presence, offering a site of investigation for the history of exhibitions. With regards to the belief that “the art history of the second half of the 20th century is no longer a history of artworks but a history of exhibitions”, this study is an inquiry into the history of the Venice Biennale, a specific moment of the Biennale’s remodeling process after the 1968 crisis. As a prominent exhibition of the ’76 Biennale, Ambiente/Arte (Environment/Art) exhibition was curated by the renowned Italian art critic Germano Celant. The exhibition, where many actors, objects and institutions of artistic production and distribution overlapped, brought together the Avantgarde environments and contemporary site-specific works, getting the concept of ambiente back on the agenda. In other words, Celant created anew ephemeral situations for the display of historical artworks and redefined the ephemeral forms and mediums of contemporary art; he also experimented a new curatorial practice by declaring a common theme for all the contributors.

The Biennale archive Archivio Storico delle Arte Contemporanea, ASAC, is the fundamental reference for this study. The telegrams as ephemera –acquired documents of correspondences between the curator-director-contributing artists-galleries, has been approached as important historical sources of the making of the Biennale ‘76. They decipher the impracticability of making an international exhibition at that time, due to the challenges in terms of transportation of large-scale works, and of transmission of information about the exhibition installation. In this context, this study aims to construct an alternative narrative of the ’76 exhibition, unveiling the reasons behind its achievements and inefficacy.
