This paper aims to outline the different ways, besides scabbards and sheaths, that leather has been used on European edged weapons through examples from the Royal Armouries' own study collection. This cannot be totally exhaustive, due to the limits of the collection and, especially with early material, the lack of surviving examples. Nevertheless, it hopes to provide a short survey of the range of ways leather has been used, and touch on some of the reasons for its use.
