The southern part of the Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse region is crossed from east to west by a stretch of limestone hills and plateaux, the Calestienne, which extends from Trélon to Vireux over a width of some 4 km. The caves, rifts and karstic networks of the Viroin region, an integral part of the Calestienne, constitute, as elsewhere, an excellent repository of the remains of the various periods of our past.
Since the earliest times of man's presence in the region, these natural shelters have been used as campsites, well protected from the cold and bad weather, and more recently, as burial sites or, in more troubled times, as refuges against the perils of war. The very nature of the surrounding rock, limestone, has favoured the relatively good preservation of the bone remains, which are essential elements for our knowledge of the way of life of our ancestors.

Classical Middle Magdalenian thrusters occupy a special and highly original place among the decorated weapons and tools of the Upper Palaeolithic. A number of them, all fashioned from reindeer antler, incorporate their most functional part - the hook, the support on which the heel of the projectile is inserted - into their ornamentation, "in a total control of figurative art" (Vialou 1991: 233).

Numerous projectile experiments focusing on the replication and use of Stone Age spearheads and arrowheads made of bone or antler have been undertaken since the early 1980s. A survey of this literature is presented here, focusing on aspects of point resistance and breakage patterns, in order to provide a synthetic view of the experimentally-attested macroscopic use-wear traces on this type of implements. Emerging from this general overview, a consistent discrepancy in the extent of fracture damage between the experimental results and the archeological record is pointed out. A first explanation for this situation is suggested, based on recent experimental results. Finally, several directions for further research on this topic are proposed.

Abstract: The excavations carried out by E. Passemard and R. and S. de Saint-Périer in the cave of Isturitz uncovered many fragments of spearthrowers of all the known types. Often beautifully decorated, these artefacts were found in the layers dated from the Middle Magdalenian, possibly even from its earlier phases. The C14 dated spearthrower draft suggests that this kind of weapon was still in use late in the Upper Magdalenian. This draft prooves also that the production was local.

During the Early Middle Magdalenian, the south-western Franco-Cantabrian region released a small number of spearthrowers that differ from the decorated spearthrowers of the classical phase by a couple characteristics. This may be the reason why they are massively unknown, even among Prehistorians. Thanks to their morphology and their morphometry, as well as their wide geographic distribution, and their association with very specificmaterial remains, these spearthrowers may contribute to a better understanding of the various aspects of the Early Middle Magdalenian.

Abstract: Spearthrower fragments from the La Madeleine shelter (Dordogne, France). At least 9 spearthrower fragments, maybe more, were found at the La Madeleine shelter. One of these was found during the excavations led by E. Lartet and H. Christy in 1863, all the rest during D. Peyrony's excavations between 1910 and 1913. They are therefore the first to have a fairly reliable stratigraphic position. All but one come from the inferior level, attributed by L. Capitan and D. Peyrony to the Magdalenian IV as described by H. Breuil. One fragment was found in the middle level, attributed to the Magdalenian V, along with unilaterally barbed harpoons: to this day, it is one of the few spearthrowers specifically found in an Upper Magdalenian level. These fragments practically all belong to the type 3 of our 1988 classification: male spearthrowers (hook), shaft shaped with a decor that does not modify their overall sub cylindrical shape, and decorated with a herbivore's forequarters, usually a horse, sometimes just the head. This type has the widest geographic extension, but its chronology still needs to be clarified.

An unpublished fragment of a spear-thrower of type 2 from the Grotte du Placard was recently identified in Breuil’s collection stored at the IPH, Paris. It is very similar to another fragment drawn and used by Breuil to establish his chronology of the Upper Palaeolithic, in which it is attributed to the Magdalenian III. From a morphological, morphometric and technologic point of view, it is also very much alike a spearthrower fragment of Combe-Saunière I, assigned to the Upper Solutrean.

In this brief note, the authors only seek to change the label of a beaker 'found in Dourbes' (Viroinval - Belgium) before it was included in the archaeological literature as a Campaniform beaker. It is a ceramic ware mounted with the help of a slow wheel (which allowed regular brushing).
The question is where to classify the beaker studied here.
It does not seem to belong to the Neolithic, nor to the Chalcolithic, nor to the Bronze Age, nor to the Iron Age, nor to the Roman period. Its form, like its material, does not suggest that it belongs to one of these periods. The question of whether it belongs to the (High) Middle Ages has been submitted to several colleagues who are more competent than we are in this matter. The suggested date is plausible, but the provenance given is less so,
especially according to the nature of the clay paste. All, according to drawing and/or photography and/or observation of the object, seem to agree on a non-local production, atypical of the Calestian, perhaps Mediterranean.

Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) was applied to locate and image buried remnants such as walls or foundations of a Gallo-Roman villa near Matagne-la-Petite (SW Belgium). Archaeological excavations were conducted on the site in 1982-83 and the base of walls the villa was exposed but rapidly backfilled. Rather scarce information about the dig of the villa was published, especially the accurate positioning of the building. Visual inspections permitted to reduce the area of investigation, thanks to the presence of rubbles and tile fragments in the field. The GPR slice-map very clearly reveals the presence of the base of walls recognized during the archeological excavations, with some discrepancies noticed in the central part of the building. Rooms corresponding to hot and cold baths are characterized by strong signals at depth over their whole surface. Several aerial photographs corresponding to different periods had been examined in order to pinpoint the buried structure without success. However, based on the accurate positioning resulting from the GPR survey, a new examination was carried out and we were able to very clearly identify the buried structure on a photo taken in spring 2007.

SUMMARY In 1986, a small hook made in reindeer antler was found in the Upper Solutrean level of the Combe- Saunière 1 cave (Dordogne). The morphology and dimensions of the object denote a perfect integration within the series of palaeolithic and precolumbian spearthrowers in antler. It shows a particular similarity with three palaeolithic spearthrowers found in the Placard cave (Charentes) in the XlXth century. Experimental reconstruction demonstrates it's efficiency.

Res. d'A.
