Le guerrier gaulois de première ligne
Ce que l'onomastique peut nous dire : Nomen est omen.
Il y a un ensemble de noms de Gaulois, formés différemment, mais dont la signification récurrente semble désigner les guerriers de première ligne dans un dispositif militaire d'attaque, « ceux qui sont à l'avant ». Les auteurs anciens ont décrit à de multiples reprises l'apparence des Gaulois avant l'engagement : les plus braves en tête qui hurlent et font des grimaces pour impressionner l'adversaire. Il était évidemment prestigieux d'avoir été en première ligne dans une bataille, d'où l'idionyme-titre qui leur était ensuite donné. Voici quelques noms de Gaulois 'qui se tiennent en avant' dans la bataille. La plupart sont construits avec le préfixe Ari-, Are-, Ar- 'de devant, en avant', issu d'un ancien *pari- < *prHi- comparable au sanskrit purā 'devant' ou à l'allemand Vor-.

A linguistic and historical analysis of the names of the months of the Coligny calendar reveals that they contain information regarding the seasons they were to be situated in. This is compared to data extrapolated from historical calendars from the other Celtic countries. It is found that an archaic division of the year in two seasons, summer and winter, was shared across all the calendars examined. The equation of Gaulish Samon with Irish Samhain is questioned, examined closely and found to be false. An investigation of the arguments which have historically led to an identification of the Irish festival of Samhain and its modern counterpart All Saints' Eve with a presumed former concept of a pan-Celtic New Year found that this identification was erroneous. Instead the data strongly indicates that the start of the Celtic new year, as illustrated by the Coligny calendar, took place around the start of what is now the month of May, and was associated with what is now generally referred to as May Day celebrations, known in an Irish context as Bealtaine and in a Welsh context as Calan Haf.

Le torque est selon Henri Hubert « la pièce la plus caractéristique de la parure gauloise » et selon Pierre Lambrechts « la parure par excellence des peuplades celtes ». Pour Simone Deyts, il est un signe de leur identité. On le voit de façon récurrente au cou de Cernunnos, de sa parèdre et d'autres dieux et héros celtes, ainsi que de son presque équivalent, le Mercure de l'interpretatio gallica. Or, l'idée de simple parure n'a pas cours chez les dieux. Il convient donc d'examiner plus en profondeur l'aspect mythique ou religieux de cet anneau.

Stéphane Verger a montré que l’Hyperborée a changé de place dans la géographie mythique des Grecs : située au VIIIe siècle A.C. au nord, derrière le vent Borée, elle est peuplée d’êtres aussi heureux que parfaits. Puis l’Hyperborée se déplace vers l’Ouest et se peuplant de Celtes idéalisés. Les vues anciennes sur les Hyperboréens ont toutes les chances d’être imbibées de mythes celtes plus ou moins fragmentaires.

La mise en lumière de quelques attributs récurrents de Lugus doit permettre de discuter en quoi il est assimilable au dieu-cerf, et pour quelle raison il peut, à l’époque romaine, apparaître parfois comme en transparence à travers le masque fragile de dieux étrangers ou autochtones.

Un moyen pour étudier la civilisation celtique est l'onomastique, c'est à dire l'étude des noms propres que les Celtes donnaient aux personnes, aux dieux et aux lieux. On peut, grâce à la comparaison avec les langues celtiques médiévales insulaires, irlandais, gallois, breton, en restituer le sens. A titre d'exemple on se penchera ici sur un ensemble de noms de Gaulois, formés différemment, mais dont la signification récuttente semble désigner des guerriers de première ligne dans un dispositif militaire d'attaque, "ceux qui sont à l'avant".

Aussi paradoxal que cela puisse paraître, la décapitation du guerrier est un commencement… du point de vue symbolique : comme la tête couronnée de bois de cerf, la tête coupée est une tête magnifiée dont le pouvoir spécial est mis en valeur. On peut supposer que l'une et l'autre symbolisent la force fécondante du héros.

Il semble prometteur de tourner le regard vers les étoiles afin d’en savoir plus sur le dénommé Ogmios, dieu infernal autant que saturnien, avatar selon nous de Cernunnos, qui par son verbe engendre les créatures et les assujettit dans un vaste filet à l’image du ciel constellé.

It is often asserted that the term "Celtic", when used in relation to languages, culture, history or, specifically, a people or group of people, is a modern invention, is inaccurate and inappropriate, and should not be used. This essay offers a brief discussion of the historicity of the use of the term.

This brief overview of Gaulish religion finds indications that the Gaulish worldview was animistic in nature, without dichotomy between humans and their surrounding world. Phenomena such as thunder and lightning, and entities such as mountains and rivers appear as deities, and seem to have played an important role in people's lives.

Le chaudron d’abondance du dieu-druide irlandais Dagda aiguise depuis longtemps la curiosité des Celtisants amateurs et ceux plus académiques. La rareté, tout autant que le caractère tardif et christianisé des sources mythologiques y faisant référence, ont fait qu’aucune étude d’envergure n’avait été consacrée jusqu’ici à cet attribut divin et à la signification qu’il recouvrait dans la pensée religieuse gaélique préchrétienne, et plus particulièrement au sein de la théologie du dieu Dagda.
  Valéry Raydon tente de combler cette lacune à l’aide de la méthode structurale et comparative dumézilienne. Relevant la qualité de la source de référence sur ce chaudron, une notice tenant lieu à la fois de théogonie, de sociogenèse divine, et de récit étiologique sur l’origine de la souveraineté irlandaise, il restitue la place de ce chaudron à l’intérieur du système panthéiste goïdélique et met en lumière le réseau complexe d’éléments symboliques codi-fiant le motif mythologique de cet attribut divin. Il n’était pas seulement une marmite au contenu alimentaire inexhaustible, mais un vaissel faisant l’objet d’une curieuse association avec l’élément marin et un talisman de souveraineté. Et il avait pour mission de remplir un office social particulier : assurer le service alimentaire des banquets royaux célébrant les grandes fêtes d’ouverture des saisons du calendrier préchrétien par lequel le roi des dieux Túatha Dé Dánann montrait sa compétence à nourrir l’ensemble de la population irlandaise. L’authenticité et l’ancienneté de la tradition transmise tardivement est démontrée à la fois par la concordance de la codification du chaudron du Dagda avec les autres accessoires connus du dieu, et par sa relation directe avec une conception archaïque de l’organisation du panthéon et de la souveraineté relevant de l’idéologie trifonctionnelle indo-européenne.
    L’auteur identifie aussi une application rituelle du chaudron du Dagda survivant dans une institution majeure de l’Irlande alto-médiévale, celle du ‘chaudron de répartition’ propre à l’aristocratie gaélique. Et il traque les avatars du chaudron mythique dans l’épopée, dans l’hagiographie, mais aussi dans la toponymie et les légendes qui s’y rattachent. Il discute la fidélité des avatars débusqués au schéma mythologique décalqué et examine leurs éventuels apports à l’approfondissement de la compréhension du chaudron du Dagda et, par ricochets, au décryptage de certains traits de la personnalité du dieu demeurés obscurs dans sa mythologie. Ainsi assiste-t-on au lever du mystère sur deux des aspects les plus énigmatiques de cette marmite : son rapport aux eaux marines et l’origine de son pouvoir génésique extraordinaire.

The lists also certainly contain mistakes, any hints would be welcome, and I will gladly make amendments. I hope the lists are of some use to scholars working on related subjects, despite their obvious deficiencies.

This is the translation of the Coligny Calendar of the Druids of Gaul discovered in Coligny, France. The first translation of Year Thirteen of this western lunar calendar that measures the moon, the sun, and the stars was printed for our age in 2013-2014. Year Thirteen may now be used for the year 2032-2033.

This article outlines the basic astronomy and acts as a source guide for "Year One of the Lunar Calendar: December 22, 2020- December 11, 2021." Year One of the Lunar Calenar can be downloaded from this academia.edu site; the calendar is in the section entitled "The Coligny Calendar Translation." In the context of discussions about the people and the language of the area historically known as Gaul or Gallia, there are several errors of terminology that are often encountered. This paper analyses the various terms associated with this area, its people and its language, and aims to set the record straight.

The author proposes that the Gaulish inscription from Larzac was com¬posed in a 2/1 stressed meter, the common Celtic short line. It displays 48 lines, all in the same format, with some 90% of the non-fragmentary lines showing alliteration as a linkage across the caesura.

At the end of the Gallic Wars in 52 BC Caesar led his legions to the hilltop town of Alesia in Burgundy; inside were over 80,000 Gallic soldiers and civilians commanded by the charismatic leader Vercingetorix. The Roman's decided to starve the defenders out in what has become one of history's most dramatic sieges. This article relates these events and describes the new museum and visitor centre which opened there in 2012.

Cette étude aborde la problématique liée aux découvertes d'armes dans l'eau en tentant d'appréhender le phénomène pour le nord de la France et la Belgique. La première partie s'attarde à une relecture du matériel laténien retrouvé à Pommerœul (province de Hainaut, Belgique). Les armes – épées et lances –  sont enrichies de nouvelles observations tandis que le demi-torque en or et les monnaies font l'objet d'une étude comparative se voulant la plus exhaustive possible. Enfin, la question de la déposition d'objets dans l'eau à Pommerœul donne lieu à de nouvelles réflexions, tirées de l'analyse des contextes funéraire et cultuel environnants. La question du culte chez les Nerviens est également envisagée.

La deuxième partie s'organise autour des périodes romaine et mérovingienne au nord de la Gaule. Quels sont les éléments qui peuvent venir appuyer, ou non, la déposition d'armes dans l'eau à ces périodes? Est-il possible de se baser sur le maigre corpus disponible pour la Gaule septentrionale ?

In this paper we analyze the dynamic nature of ethnic identities in Late Iron Age Gaul and the paramount role that in their definition played warfare and military pressure, especially Roman intervention from the middle of the 2nd century BC onwards. Even if some ethnic identities in Gaul could perhaps be traced as far back as the 4th century
BC, the migration of the Cimbrii and Teutones at the end of the 1st century BC, the increasing Roman presence, crystallized in the Caesarean conquest, and the own rivalries among Gallic civitates, meant a situation of pervading military stress. Against this backdrop, group identities were redefined according to political and military
developments. Migrating communities as the Helvetii, military coalitions as the one constituted by the Belgae, or hegemonic civitates as the Aeduii, show us inclusive and fluid processes of construction of ethnic identities, where small groups could coalesce into bigger ones ‒or segregate. Alongside the political dimension, cultural strategies as
the construction of a shared cultural memory were crucial in the strengthening of these redefined identities, in a time when changes brought by Roman Imperialism were increasingly felt by Gallic societies.

This document produced by Steve Hansen (Australia) is central to the revival of the Gallic / Gaulish / Continental Celtic language. This is the reconstructed language named Modern Gaulish. Introduction pages 9 - 15. I am a part of this revival, and a dialogue partner to Mr. Hansen on topics of culture, history, language, etc. Apart from this proposed MG grammar and two anthologies with MG texts, the German translation of Steve Hansen’s “20 Lessons in Modern Gaulish” was done by me in 2018 (for beginners). The vocabulary of this semi-natural language is systematically extended since this movement started ten years ago. Modern Gaulish is on Facebook and VKontakte.
