In southwestern France, and particularly in south of the Garonne, research on protohistoric habitat has remained deficient. However, the area has a remarkable potential for study, as illustrated by the many "protohistoric" fortifications mentioned above. In order to change the situation, a RCP dedicated to fortified housing in the metal ages (FORTIPOLIS) was launched in 2016. The aim was to gain a better understanding of the defensive systems, function and chronology of these settlements during Protohistory. After updating the inventories in an database, the field researches focused on the acquisition of new surveys (GPS, Lidar), site checks and excavations. The first results reveal a great diversity of defensive devices and construction techniques and open up new perspectives at the fortified habitat in the region allowing us to place it in its European context.

From the Garonne to the Pyrenees. Cultural identit-ies in South-West France in the Second Iron Age. The south-west of France has long been marginal to the research agendas developed across Celtic Europe, due on the one hand to differences in the available data and on the other to its adherence to a different tradition of research. The recent increase in archaeological activity, especially in the Bordeaux and Toulouse areas, now allows a reassessment of the place of the region within the La Tène culture. In addition to its location as a geographical crossroads, the Classical sources attribute the study area to the Aquitani and to different “Celtic” peoples. Yet the situation appears much more complex from the archaeological point of view. Consideration of the material culture, urban patterns, architectural traditions, defensive arrangements, and land-use systems and their evolution through time, reveals evidence for both continental and specifically-local arrangements, the impacts of which vary from north to south. Coinage, meanwhile, shows different dominant regional circulation patterns (Southern Aquitaine; Gers and the Garonne catchment), that partially overlapped in the valley of the Garonne. In sum, if the continental dimension of this culture is predominant, the South-West is none the less distinguished by a mixed cultural identity and the existence of micro-regional groups with spatial patterns which do not necessarily coincide with the ethnic organization depicted in the ancient sources.

Abastract : The fortified settlements from the Protohistory in the pyrénéo-garonnaise area still suffer from an important deficit of researches. The latter is particularly marked for the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. In spite of the importance of the gaps, it is possible to draw up a first assessment, by taking into account the best known sites. Three big types of fortifications are attested since the final Neolithic : surrounding walls, blocked spurs and supports on steep slope. The latter are always adapted to the topography. These settlements seem to gain in importance during the transition Bronze-Iron and can reach 5 or even 10 hectares. In the coming years, a collective research program should allow to progress significantly in the study of these sites.

The open agglomerations of southwest France at the end of the Iron Age: the case of the Volques and the Aquitaine people
In the south of Midi-Pyrénées, the open agglomerations of the end of the Iron Age have been attested since the 1960s. With the exception of Toulouse-Saint-Roch, none was the subject of dedicated research before the 2000s. A first assessment allows to establish their general characteristics. The sites generally occupy theterraces located closest to the natural waterways, sometimes near a ford, and the rights-of-way observed, apart from exceptional sites like Auch and Toulouse Saint-Roch, range from 3-4 to 10 hectares. In addition, these establishments assume craft and commercial functions, providing for local or micro-regional needs. Finally, most of them last through a vicus in Roman times. Despite everything, the data gathered show that these agglomerations do not form a homogeneous whole; future research should therefore allow to refine their characterization.

Abstract Preventive and programmed excavations carried out recently in the Midi-Pyrenees have revealed numerous remains of architecture of the end of the Iron age, in an area hitherto lagging behind in this domain. The data come from agglomerations as well as rural establishments, mainly located in the Garonne basin, and stratified contexts or not. The amount of information collected and the comparative analysis bring out the diversity of techniques (earthfast post constructions, timber-framed buildings, cob...) but also specific choices according to the type of occupation. Some sites, particularly well-preserved, offer an opportunity to study in a combined way the plans of the building, the floors and the elevations (collapsed walls, nails). These results enrich the reflection on the remains coming from levelled down settlements and can be paralleled with the data of older sites (Early Iron age or beginning of the Late). It is also possible to study architectural dynamics in stratified contexts (Roquelaure or Vieille-Toulouse), evolving over more than a century (common ownership, preferential use of the sill beam or earthfast posts, spread of the italic construction techniques...). Lastly, the accumulated data make it possible to examine the modalities of the transition with Roman period on a new basis (houses of the italic type of Roquelaure and Vieille-Toulouse, baths of Cornebarrieu).

Fortunately, Joaquín Gorrochategui’s research opened up a few new research routes to improve our knowledge of this area. From an archaeological point of view, both sides of the western Pyrenees have their own cultural specificity, which differs from their Gaulish, Iberian and Celtiberian neighbors. This paper focuses on two archaeological materials, ceramic and coinage, to better understand the cultural dynamics, the ethnic complexity and the evolution of the local populations, in between the Iron Age and the Roman period.

The Roquelaure excavation was completed in 2019. This was the first excavation ever carried out on a protohistoric settlement in the Aquitaine triangle. The site was densely occupied from the 6th century BC onwards. The settlement was organised around terraces on the southern slopes and evolved through successive reforms until the 2nd century BC. However, the most significant advances concern the late Iron Age. One of the main contributions of the excavation was to reveal the urban organisation of this part of the plateau. The sector was structured around terraces, which were to be combined with ditches to form islands. Within this framework, some of the terraces were dedicated to housing, while others were used for outdoor activities. These characteristics and the stability of the built-up areas over time clearly show that occupation was governed by relatively strict town planning rules. A wealth of data has also been gathered on architectural techniques and the management of domestic spaces. Last but not least, the excavations also yielded a wealth of documentation on food, crafts and trade.

Vieille-Toulouse is one of those emblematic archaeological sites which have always focused the attention of scholars and researchers. Prisoner for a long time of debates about its identification with Gallic Toulouse, it was, in reality, the subject of archaeological research only from the 20th century. This pioneering work revealed the chronology of the site, several habitat sectors and two sanctuaries. Interrupted since 1984, research only resumed in 2000, in the framework of new laws governing preventive archaeology. Thanks to around twenty diagnostics and excavations, mainly carried out by Inrap, decisive progress has been recorded in the areas of town planning, occupation dynamics, architecture, trade and commerce, production of manufactured goods and political and territorial status.

------------
Vieille-Toulouse is one of those emblematic archaeological sites which have always focused the attention of scholars and researchers.

Abstract
Preventive and programmed excavations carried out recently in the Midi-Pyrenees have revealed numerous remains of architecture of the end of the Iron age, in an area hitherto lagging behind in this domain.
