Isturitz

The authors organized a projectile experiment including the use of bow and spear-thrower in conditions replicating Palaeolithic hunting. Experimental copies of antler points from the Late Upper Palaeolithic showed proximal fractures characteristic of spear-thrower use. Similar fractures are found on archaeological specimens from the Upper Magdalenian occupation of the Isturitz site, thus bringing arguments in favour of the persistence of this weapon at least until ca. 16―14 cal ka BP in Western Europe.

Abstract: The excavations carried out by E. Passemard and R. and S. de Saint-Périer in the cave of Isturitz uncovered many fragments of spearthrowers of all the known types. Often beautifully decorated, these artefacts were found in the layers dated from the Middle Magdalenian, possibly even from its earlier phases. The C14 dated spearthrower draft suggests that this kind of weapon was still in use late in the Upper Magdalenian. This draft prooves also that the production was local.

Résumé : Les fouilles d’E. Passemard et de R. et S. de Saint-Périer dans la grotte d’Isturitz ont livré de nombreux fragments de propulseurs appartenant à tous les types identifiés. Souvent superbement décorés, ces objets proviennent des couches attribuées au Magdalénien moyen, peut-être même à des phases anciennes de celui-ci. La date 14C réalisée sur une ébauche suggère par ailleurs que ce type d’arme était encore en usage jusqu’à une date avancée dans le Magdalénien supérieur. La présence de cette ébauche témoigne également d’une production locale.

We have reproduced the most complete Gravettian aerophone recovered at the site of Isturitz (Saint Martin d’Arberoue, France) in order to evaluate its musical performance and check their manufacturing process with the alterations recorded in the lithic tools used. Reproducimos el más completo aerófono gravetiense recuperado en el yacimiento de Isturitz (Saint Martín d’Arberoue, Francia) para comprobar su rendimiento musical y comprobar su proceso de fabricación junto con las alteraciones registradas en los útiles líticos empleados.

Dans le cadre d'une étude expérimentale portant sur les armes de chasse du Magdalénien supérieur d'Isturitz, nous avons souhaité étudier les restes de faune qui leur étaient associés, témoignages du gibier chassé. Un premier examen de la série (MAN, collections Passemard et Saint-Périer, couches F1 et I) a révélé des manques flagrants par rapport aux données bibliographiques disponibles, laissant planer un sérieux doute sur la possibilité de conduire une étude archéozoologique pertinente. La restitution historiographique de l'exploitation du site a toutefois permis de préciser certaines informations figurant dans les publications des fouilleurs, ainsi que d’évaluer et de compenser dans une certaine mesure les distorsions liées aux stratégies de fouille et/ou au devenir des collections. Un examen archéozoologique préliminaire, intégrant ces différentes données, apporte un nouvel éclairage sur les pratiques cynégétiques et plus généralement sur le système d’exploitation et de gestion des ressources animales mis en place par les occupants d'Isturitz au Magdalénien supérieur.

The Isturitz cave is a famous reference prehistoric site. It offers one of
the most important stratigraphic sequences of Western Europe, from Middle
Paleolithic to the end of Upper Paleolithic. Gravettian holds a central
place, both by its central stratigraphic position in the middle of Upper
Paleolithic and by the unequalled density of the archaeological remains
which have already been studied (Passemard, 1924, 1944 ; Saint-Périer,
1952 ; Bouchud, 1951 ; de Beaufort and Julien, 1973 ; Clottes, 1976 ;Esparza
San-Juan, 1990 ; Gambier, 1990-91 ; Mujika Alustiza, 1991 ; Esparza San-
Juan and Mujika Alustiza, 1996a and b ; Buisson, 1990 ; Schwab, 2003…).
Relying on these researches, and using others approaches of materials
(technological, economical, archaeozoological), our aim is to renew datas
about Isturitz Gravettian whose old excavations and dense levels contribute
to give yet a monolithic picture. Productions (lithic and osseous) as well
as fauna remains will therefore be tackled together. For the first time, the
new archaeozoological studies give data on seasonality and subsistence
strategy. From now on, the determination of lithic raw materials opens
the field of an estimate of the supply area and suggests some changes
compared with Aurignacian. By taking account distortions due to the excavation
methods and to the particular cave sedimentation process, we will
attempt to enlight the gravettian occupations from this major site. This
will lead us to discuss the structuration of the Isturitz Gravettian and the
activities which have taken place there (domestic, hunting, symbolic), in
order to suggest several tracks of thought on the site function and its place
within “aquitano-pyreneo-cantabrique” area.

Isturitz Cave is located in the western Pyrenees in the heart of the zone
of passage and contact between the Aquitaine region and the Vasco-
Cantabrian ledge. Excavations during the first half of the 20th century
yielded a remarkable archaeological sequence covering the Middle Palaeolithic
and the entire Upper Palaeolithic. New research conducted in the
Saint-Martin chamber has revealed intensive Aurignacian occupations
attributed to the archaic and early phases of this techno-complex. In this
paper, we present a synthesis of the principal data that make Isturitz a key
site in the study of this period.

El presente trabajo representa una aportacion mas al estudio global de la tecnologia cerami-ca en la Protohistoria del Pais Vasco, recogiendose en el los resultados obtenidos de la aplicacion de tecnicas petrograficas en ceramicas de la Protohistoria de Alava. Se han estudiado ceramicas de tres yacimientos arqueologicos representativos, Castillo de Henayo, Penas de Oro y La Hoya, emitiendose diversas observaciones en cuanto a las tecnologias de fabricacion asi como en cuan-to ala naturaleza de las materias prima elegidas en la confeccion de las ceramicas.
