Language and Knowledge

Le volume traite de la médiation des savoirs sur le langage et l’appréhende sous deux aspects. D’une part, le volume propose quelques pistes pour mieux comprendre ce qu’engage de fabriquer des savoirs sur le langage lorsque la relation entre linguistes et public investigué est celle d’une attention mutuelle des deux parties plutôt que celle d’une position surplombante de l’une sur l’autre. D’autre part, il présente certaines manières par lesquelles les savoirs construits en sciences du langage sont diffusés par les linguistes auprès du public, qu’il soit professionnel ou ‘profane’, sans prétentions à en épuiser l’inventaire.

Le choix d’articuler ces deux aspects s’explique d’abord par le fait que la médiation des savoirs sur le langage, au contraire peut-être de nos a priori, ne s’observe pas seulement au moment de la communication, de la vulgarisation ou de la transposition des résultats mais tout au long du processus de recherche. Dans un cas comme dans l’autre, se réunissent autour de l’objet langage des instances aux positions épistémiques et sociales différenciées. L’articulation de questionnements relatifs à la fabrication et à la diffusion des savoirs sur le langage répond également à la préoccupation de sortir la recherche de sa tour d’ivoire pour en envisager les implications. Dans la perspective d’une science aux prises avec le monde social, et dans le prolongement d'une réflexion sur la co-construction des connaissances, la médiation des savoirs apparait comme une des conditions, un des moyens et une des finalités incontournables de la recherche.

El llenguatge humà també interessa als psicòlegs, als sociòlegs i als filòsofs, ja que llengua, persona, societat i coneiximent són realitats molt vinculades. L’article intenta penetrar en el tema a partir d’una proposta de Ramon Llull, segons la qual el llenguatge seria el sentit sisé de la persona. Per a fer-li costat, l’article argumenta que el llenguatge humà seria bàsicament el resultat de la interpretació que les persones fem del món físic amb els sentits i l’activitat de la raó o capacitat d’entendre. Com que la raó i els sentits funcionen igual en tothom, se’n deriva que les estructures bàsiques de les llengües són universals. Per una altra banda, els conceptes que conté el llenguatge ajuden a les persones a interpretar les seues sensacions i emocions i, per tant, afavorixen la reflexió i l’autoconeixement, informació que l’emissor pot comunicar al receptor (§1.2.1–§1.2.3). L’aprenentatge de les nostres experiències es pot acumular i conservar històricament, de manera que apareixen les civilitzacions o cultures. Per a l’infant, la primera utilitat del llenguatge és accedir al conei¬xement de la cultura, l’assimilació de la qual comporta la integració social (§1.3.3). El llenguatge també és un mitjà que possi¬bilita la creació. Partint de conceptes lingüístics preexistents, creem conceptes nous que ja no representen alguna part (o alguna característica) del món físic: hem arribat al món purament abstracte i al món cultural (§1.3.1 i §1.3.2). La part abstracta de les llengües justifica l’afirmació que un idioma és inseparable de la civilització que l’usa, de tal mane¬ra que la degradació d’una llengua té repercussions importants en la societat (§1.3.4). L’article també tracta si hi ha pensament sense el llenguatge (§1.4.1), si les llengües humanes són una construcció o una facultat (innata, §1.4.2) i com podrien ser els llenguatges dels altres animals (§1.2.5).

Abstract: The article examines Polish translations of the Derridian term différance. Polish philosophical discourse uses the following renditions of différance: róż (ni (c) oś) ć by Bogdan Banasiak, różNICa by Tadeusz Sławek, gra-na-zwłokę-o-różnicę by Stanisław Cichowicz and the most popular: różnia by Joanna Skoczylas. Should a mistake be deliberately committed in Polish, as it was done in the original? Or should it be corrected, and if so–how to explain the correction?

Is linguistic understanding a form of knowledge? I clarify the question and then consider two natural forms a positive answer might take. I argue that, although some recent arguments fail to decide the issue, neither positive answer should be accepted. The aim is not yet to foreclose on the view that linguistic understanding is a form of knowledge, but to develop desiderata on a satisfactory successor to the two natural views rejected here.

Topic: Arabic as a language of knowledge transfer and production: A look into the future
There is a recent movement in the Arabic-speaking world to create an enduring legacy of intellectual innovation and education within the Arab world.  This conference aims to explore the theoretical and pragmatic issues relevant to (1) promoting the Arabic language as a tool of scientific inquiry, an official language in public discourse, and a primary language for teaching and research, (2) establishing, maintaining, and nurturing intellectual links and two-way dialogues between knowledge production in Arabic and the international learning and research community, and (3) affecting positively the status and quality of Arabic education domestically, regionally, and internationally.
Themes: Role of language in knowledge transfer and production, Interrelationship of language and thought, Enforcement of language planning policies, Descriptive and analytical studies of native language proficiencies, Academic and intellectual requirements of knowledge processes, Academic language assessment tools, Realities of academic and language training in Arab universities, Socio- and Psycholinguistic parameters of knowledge, Role of heritage speakers, role of technology, and other themes that are of relevance.

20 years ago, in 2002, prime ministers and head of states decided, that all people in the European
Union should know two other, foreign languages beside of the mother language (Kommission
der Europäischen Gemeinschaften 2005). Since that, the foreign language teaching and learning
changed a lot, and the foreign language knowledge is one of the basic competences nowadays
e. g. in education or labour market. But the foreign language knowledge of the European people
is very different – that means level and languages as well. Furthermore, the good foreign
language knowledge means not only the language knowledge (grammar, pronunciation,
vocabulary etc.) but cultural information too. The cultural knowledge helpsto interpret different
situations on other foreign languages, and it takes better the foreign language knowledge. These
are the start points of the thematic issue, in that there are theoretical and empirical papers about
the foreign language teaching, learning and interesting about culture in foreign languages.
Contributors to the thematic part of this special issue draw on different disciplines and research
traditions among the following questions:
- How can we interpret constructivism in 21st century’s teaching / learning environment?
- How can we interpret and adapt in classrooms the theory of tertiary language didactics?
- How can we help interpretation of literary texts to develop students’ discourse
competence?
- How can we realize the multilingualism in the Lithuanian educational institutions?
- How can we interpret the Reading and Mathematics competency results of students with
learning disorder / integration, learning and behavioural difficulties in classes with
special language curriculum?
- How can we recognize foreign students the Hungarian culture with help of museums?
