In the Zibaldone of Giorgio Vasari, the manuscript marked with the number 31 in the Vasari Archives of Arezzo, various projects and decorative letters of the artist's hand and his correspondents are preserved: there are also two long series of handwritten notes on which, though already published, it is worthwhile to scrutinize further, for a full reading of Vasari's method of work–also supported by other witnesses hitherto unpublished manuscripts that is relevant to the drafting of frescoes or creation of ephemeral works as the writing of the Lives appeared in Florence in 1568. The historical research, indispensable to identify the ancient portraits painted in fresco or placed in magnificent wedding preparations was the direct consequence of painstaking investigations launched in the scenes of the Sale del Principe. Vasari and Borghini made meticulous researches in chronicles and in antiquarian texts to draft a decorative cycle in the Salone dei Cinquecento.
