Leonardo Coimbra

This article seeks to reconstruct  the history  of  Tripartite Iberianism,  that is,  an intellectual project for unity in Peninsular diversity grounded in  the idea  that there are three  "essential " Iberian culture-nations: Portugal, Castile and Catalonia.  This current of thought has its roots in, among other tendencies, Catalan  modernisme. Because of  this initial affiliation, it tended to lose historiographical visibility  as the more monolithic  forms of national identity characteristic of noucentisme gained hegemony in Catalonia and the rest of the Peninsula  in the second decade of the 20th century. However, Tripartite Iberianism, continued be promoted by important intellectuals, such as Gaziel,  until the late 1950s.  However, it would never come close to achieving the prominence it had during  first decade or so of the  century when well-known  thinkers such Maragall, Unamuno and Pascoaes were among its firmest proponents

In the context of the globalization of philosophical contemporaneity, the philosophy made in Portugal has been relegated to a position of marginality. The purpose of this study is to deepen the discussion on the subject and to contribute to future investigations centered on the studies about the Philosophy in Portugal and its international relations, trying to make it clear that such philosophy does not happen in a geo-cultural vacuum. In order to do so, I will look at the crosses between the thoughts of Leonardo Coimbra and Vladimir Solovyov, expecting to provide a basis for future studies on the reception of the thought of the Russian philosopher by the Portuguese philosopher. In fact, the intersection between these two thinkers is, besides expressed by Leonardo Coimbra, discernible as soon as examined.

Renascença Portuguesa and Integralismo Lusitano were two Portuguese nationalist movements from the 1920s with an outstanding expression in the Iberian and Ibero-American spaces. They were responsible for political and cultural influences on Peninsular peripheral regionalisms, as well as those in Brazil and other Latin American countries. With its origin in the nineteenth century and becoming fully mature in the interwar period of the twentieth century, Galician nationalism used the arguments of language and culture to recover its identity. It was also able to create a genuine hermeneutics that would guarantee for Galician people their own government, educational system and the recovery of their history, literature, culture and popular traditions, indispensable urgings in the process of reinventing a nation. Accomplices and guides of a Galicia eager to be independent, Portuguese republican and monarchist nationalist movements were vital in the process of building/rebuilding the nation. The dialogue with Irmandades da Fala and Geração Nós would have been profitable, were it not for the Spanish civil war and the dictatorial Iberian governments that plunged the region into the shadows for more than fifty years.
