Lutra

Mustelidae, Carnivora takımı içindeki en geniş familyadır ve 22 cins ile 56 türle temsil edilir. Avrasya’nın büyük bir bölümünde bulunan ve Mustelidae familyasına ait olan Lutra lutra (Avrupa su samuru), ülkemizde de sulak alanların önemli bir bileşenidir. Tatlı su ekosistemlerinde yaşayan bu organizma, IUCN’in Kırmızı Listesi’nde “Neredeyse tehdit altındaki türler (NT)” kategorisine dahil edilmiştir. Tüm dünyada olduğu gibi ülkemizde de sulak alanlar, ekolojik sorunlarla karşı karşıyadır ve önlem alınmaması halinde doğal yaşam ve yerel biyolojik çeşitlilik kayıplarına neden olan bu bölgelerin korunması, izlenmesi ve akademik çalışmalarla farklı boyutlarının ortaya konması gerekmektedir.
Bu amaçla, Türkiye Tabiatını Koruma Derneği (TTKDER) tarafından geleneksel hale getirilmiş olan su samuru sempozyumları ile ülkemiz sulak alanlarının bir parçası olan Lutra lutra’nın durumuna yönelik çalışmalar zenginleştirilmektedir. Mevcut çalışma, ülkemizdeki su samurları hakkında yapılmış arazi çalışmalarının çıktılarını bir araya getirmek amacıyla yapılmıştır. Ayrıca, son 5 yıl içinde ekibimizin Muğla’da yapmış olduğu arazi çalışmaları ve gözlemlere ait veriler de bu çalışma kapsamında değerlendirilmiştir. Buna göre son beş yıl içinde, Marmaris, Karacasöğüt, Hisarönü, Fethiye ve Eşen bölgelerinden elde edilen kayıtlar ile türe ait ekolojik, biyolojik ve koruma biyolojisi ile ilgili verilerin değerlendirmeleri yapılmıştır.

A decrease in a local rabbit (Oryctolagus cuniculus) population can be offset by translocation and restocking the area with rabbits from other areas. However, such translocation programmes tend to suffer from a low survival rate - possibly due to stress and lack of cover. As part of a project, that sought to evaluate the poten- tial of translocating rabbits in Dutch coastal dune areas, we were able to compare the movements of resident rab- bits with those of translocated rabbits. This was the first such experiment in the Netherlands. Mortality during the translocation process was minimised by reducing stress during the trapping, handling and transportation. How- ever, following the rabbits' release there was a high mortality from fox predation in the first week. The recolonisation of much of Europe by the Eurasian beaver (Castor fiber) entails new management, conservation and research challenges. DNA analysis can function as a powerful method in this respect. We con- ducted a trial to determine the effectiveness of barbed wire hair traps for remotely plucking hair from free-ranging beavers. At all sites it was possible to rapidly obtain hair samples containing guard hairs with follicles. Barbed wire hair traps can thus be employed as a cost effective way of collecting DNA from beavers without subjecting them to the stress of capture and handling.

This is a feasibility study for an otter reintroduction programme into Hokkaido.  The report is the result of a five-year project, lasting from 2011 to 2016, which in turn is part of a reforestation project called the Shiretoko 100 Square Metre Forest Trust. This  aims to restore the original forest that existed before cultivation, setting goals for 100-200 years in the future. In view of such a long term project, we need to consider not only the near future, but also long-term changes in the ecosystem.
