Maggie Nelson

The lyric essay often works associatively to create meaning through metaphor, analogy, and the juxtaposition of anecdotes, observations, or citations. This paper examines these ‘wild’ associations in Rebecca Solnit’s The Faraway Nearby (2013), and in Maggie Nelson’s Bluets (2009) and The Argonauts (2015). It argues that all three texts
work like long lyric essays and construct an essaying ‘I’ whose associative approach presents not just a view of the world but a method for viewing the world.

In this article, I explore the status of the self in autotheory, bringing Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams together with autotheory’s most popular text, Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts, to consider the movement in contemporary autotheory away from the split subject and toward of what I call a “plural self.” Reading Freud’s The Interpretation of Dreams as a species, avant la lettre, of autotheory, I chart how Freud’s writing challenged the coherence of the self and introduced the now critically embraced theory of the split subject. While this theory has long been a favored tool for enabling critiques of the self, I claim that recent versions of autotheory have deliberately dispensed with the deconstructed split subject in order instead to construct a plural self. Reading The Argonauts, I consider how this plural self is motivated by a principally ethico-political desire to (re)imagine the self relationally, where self and other are reconfigured as collaborative and cumulative. Ultimately, this article asks what promise for relational solidarity a notion of the plural self holds, and where this promise might find its limit.

En el libro Bluets (2009) de Maggie Nelson el azulamiento del cuerpo femenino funciona como una representación de la corporeización del dolor. Es decir que las experiencias dolorosas se expresan visualmente por medio del azul. En esta tesina analizo la manera en la que el dolor marca al cuerpo femenino. Además, expongo la relación intrínseca entre el color azul y el sufrimiento, ya que en el poemario la voz poética aborda la narrativa del dolor después de la ruptura corporal y emocional.
Considero que es relevante tratar estos tópicos puesto que históricamente el dolor de las mujeres ha sido invisibilizado y minimizado. En contraste, en Bluets, se narra de manera cruda y sin escrúpulos la paranarrativa del dolor femenino enmarcado en las experiencias de sexualidad y de enfermedad. Por otro lado, a pesar de que los estudios del cuerpo han tomado cada vez más relevancia, la discusión suele ignorar las experiencias de dolor femenino, comúnmente nombrando a lo masculino como universal. En el texto de Nelson, por medio de la descripción de encuentros sexuales y de la vida después de la cuadriplejía, la autora hace hincapié en la perspectiva de las mujeres. Así pues, destaco la mirada femenina sobre el cuerpo y su relación con las experiencias dolorosas que lo atraviesan.
La hipótesis de este trabajo de titulación es que las dos figuras femeninas corporeizan el dolor por medio del azulamiento después de que el cuerpo experimenta vivencias de enfermedad y de sexualidad. Es por esto mismo que analizo las implicaciones del color azul y de la dimensión individual del color en Bluets. Para llevar
a cabo mi objetivo me baso en teorías del recuerdo corporeizado, color y estudios del cuerpo, siempre enfatizando la importancia de la perspectiva femenina dentro del texto. Además, incluyo un análisis detallado de fragmentos pertinentes que ejemplifican los temas seleccionados y sustentan mi argumento.
Esta tesina cuenta con tres ejes principales: el cuerpo femenino y sus procesos, las vivencias dolorosas matizadas y la corporeización del color por medio del azulamiento. En el primer capítulo analizo la manera en la cual el dolor se contrasta a través de la sexualidad y de la enfermedad y cómo esto marca al cuerpo. Después, en el segundo capítulo, ahondo en la forma en la que el dolor es una experiencia compartida por ambas mujeres y cómo eligen nombrarlo, ya que el dolor las transforma al momento atravesar los procesos de condolencia de la relación de pareja y la ruptura corporal. Por último, en el tercer capítulo, expongo el azulamiento del cuerpo como expresión del dolor. Estos tres capítulos contribuyen a alcanzar el objetivo final de comprender la manera en la cual las dolencias marcan al cuerpo. A lo largo del texto de Nelson, además, se expone el dolor en términos de vacío y éste se ilustra visualmente por medio del uso del fragmento. Por lo tanto, argumento que el dolor proviene de la enfermedad y de la ruptura amorosa y que el dolor es expresado visualmente a través de la corporeización del color azul y de la fragmentación.

This monograph considers the phenomenon of the continued relevance of collage, a form established over a hundred years ago, to contemporary literature. It argues that collage is a perfect artistic vehicle to represent the crisis-ridden reality of the twenty-first-century. Being a mixture of fragmentary incompatible voices, collage embodies the chaos of the media-dominated world. Examining the artistic, sociopolitical and personal crises addressed in contemporary collage literature, the book argues that the 21st Century has brought a revival of collage-like novels and essays.

This essay explores mothering and family life in three contemporary narratives: Maggie Nelson’s The Argonauts, Sarah Manguso's Ongoingness, and Heidi Julavits's The Folded Clock. These
texts, through an autofictional account of their authors’ experiences with family making, call attention to the challenges contemporary American families face vis à vis gender and maternal roles and mainstream assumptions such as heteronormativity. The narratives’ combined interest in self- and family-making is reflected in their fluid generic status. In our post-postmodern literary period, these authors’ life writing is not only an attempt at postirony. Rather, these narratives respond to the affective logic of contemporary autofiction, portraying relational identities of the self. Nelson, Manguso and Julavits represent motherhood as a transformative, all-encompassing and bodily experience and choose to rely on “unfinished” genres (half-memoirs, half-essays, half-fiction) to reflect the idea of incompleteness around today’s motherhood and family matters.

My paper concerns two radically distinct portrayals of genital injury. The first examples, drawn from legal and doctrinal narrative, describe the cultural norm of meaningful castration. The other, which provides my paper with its title, is from Peter of Cornwall’s Book of Revelations. This set of one is an analogous injury that may mean nothing: neither penitential nor quite juridical, it may be just a strange injury, something that just happens. Rather than resolve this quandary, I’ll instead conclude by exploring the ethics of interpreting literary accounts of torment.

My contribution to this special issue on autotheory seeks to restore these critical and cultural contexts by situating the notion of "auto-teoría" in relation to French feminist writers and thinkers. The discussion which follows offers an account of the French feminist legacy of autotheory by explicating its long-standing interest in a transversal account of self-writing and self-theorizing.

Marguerite Duras’s The Malady of Death, Lydia Davis’s The End of the Story, and Maggie Nelson’s Bluets all address the grief and misery of sexual relation, or, perhaps more accurately, nonrelation. Duras’s récit provides a means of approaching the complex questions surrounding the failure of relation, and the writing of that failure, that I think interest Davis and Nelson. The Malady of Death can provide an introduction to the notion of impossible relation and the way a confrontation with that impossibility might open onto a different kind of relation—one that both escapes writing and is enacted by it. Nelson’s Bluets begins as a meditation on her love for the color blue and soon reveals itself as a work that also examines the nature of loss and the difficulty of knowing and loving another person. Lastly, Davis, in The End of the Story, focuses on the way we narrate the loss of relation, sometimes before it has even happened, as a means of trying to makes sense of something that probably always eludes our grasp.
