Csepregi Zoltán új – 2014-ben Klaniczay-díjjal jutalmazott – monográfiája nagyszerű, egyszersmind zavarba ejtő könyv. A recenzens – a mű alapos tanulmányozása után – nemigen tehet mást, mint hogy megkísérli mederbe terelni lelkesedését, amit a terjedelmes opus módszertani, filológiai és tudományetikai értékei fölött érez.

This paper presents the essential stages in the life of the archivist‑historian Lajos Kelemen. As a mentor, he contributed significantly to innovating Hungarian scholarship from Transylvania after 1920, initiated by a new historical paradigm. In all his duties – teacher at the Unitarian College in Cluj, archivist at the Archive of Transylvanian National Museum, general director of libraries and archives in Cluj, or Unitarian chief‑caretaker – he put his interests in the service of his community. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the archives of the Transylvanian Museum Society consisted of only forty thousand items, but thanks to his activity, they turned into a vast collection comprising one million documents. By personal example, Lajos Kelemen contributed to the education of many scholars, including Zsigmond Jakó and Attila T. Szabó. In recognition of his work, Lajos Kelemen was bestowed the Hungarian Corvin Chain in 1940 and the Hungarian Heritage Prize in 2011.

Whereas researchers were hitherto focused on literary sources and monuments from ancient Rome this article deals with objects from Late Antiquity connecting Early-Christian and pagan illustrations, especially from the Hungarian part of the Roman Empire. Under the influence of Christian religion combined with modifications in Roman law, several changes had an impact on the environments of children. The question is whether these alterations had also an effect on the pictures of children. For examining this presumption, depictions of children and infant Christ are investigated because Christian art is linked to the tradition of pagan Roman art. So a separation of these two groups of representations makes absolutely no sense but has been done by scholars until now.
