Mean Retention Time

Digestive tract morphology and function were studied in the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus), a small (350 g) exudivore with a well-developed caecum. Transit times (times of first appearance of the markers in the faeces following a pulse dose in the food) were similar for Co-EDTA, which marks the fluid phase of the digesta, and Cr-mordanted cell walls, which marked the large (600–1200 μm) particulate phase of the digesta. However, mean retention time (the average time taken for the markers to transverse the whole digestive tract) for Co-EDTA was significantly longer than for Cr-cell walls, indicating selective retention of fluid digesta relative to large particles, probably in the caecum. These data are consistent with a digestive strategy of the common marmoset that appears to be based on rapid digestion of higher quality foods (animal prey, fruits) in the small intestine, followed by microbial fermentation of the complex polysaccharides of plant exudates in the caecum, which would allow for considerable dietary flexibility in its natural habitat of scrub forests.

Four, male, growing Thai swamp buffaloes (197 ± 5.3 kg and all 1 year old) were used to evaluate the effects of concentrate added to pineapple waste silage in differing ratios, to form a complete diet, studying in vivo digestion, the rate of passage, microbial protein synthesis and blood metabolites. Animals were fed ad libitum with 4 diets, using four combinations of pineapple waste silage (P) and concentrate (C), in the proportions (on a dry matter basis) of 0.8:0.2 (P80:C20), 0.6:0.4 (P60:C40), 0.4:0.6 (P40:C60) and 0.2:0.8 (P20:C80). The results showed that the intakes of dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), nitrogen (N), the N-balance, urinary purine derivatives (PD) excretion, the ratios of allantoin to creatinine (CR), PD to CR, the plasma urea-N (PUN) and insulin increased in the animals, but the intake of neutral detergent fiber (NDF), the coefficient of whole tract, apparent digestibility of NDF, the transit time (TT) and the mean retention time (TMRT) decreased, when the proportion of concentrate in the diet increased. This study indicated that the proportion of P40:C60 in the diet produced the best efficiency of urinary PD excretion (mmol) per digestible OM intake (kg DOMI).

Stormwater detention facilities are often used in modern drainage systems to reduce the hydraulic load on existing sewers, due to the increase of impermeable surfaces and to the more frequent extreme rainfalls, consequence of climate changes. Although their design is mainly aimed to limit uncontrolled spills into receiving water bodies, storage capacity for water quality enhancement is often considered, mainly with the purpose of increasing the retention time. Standard analysis is usually based on empirical methods or on continuous simulations. This paper focuses on the probabilistic analysis of retention times aimed to provide guidance to engineers for the design of stormwater detention facilities. In particular, the influence on retention time of the possibility of water mixing from consecutive rainfall events, due to the pre-filling of the storage capacity from previous runoffs has been investigated. Derived expression has been tested by their application to a case study.

An original method based upon high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to ionspray mass spectrometry (HPLC-ISP-MS) has been developed for the identification and quantification in plasma of several cardiac glycosides, namely digoxin, digitoxin, lanatoside C and acetyldigitoxin. After single-step liquid-liquid extraction by chloroform-2-propanol (95:5, v/v) at pH 9.5 using oleandrin as an internal standard, solutes are separated on a 4 microm NovaPak C18 (Waters) column (150x2.0 mm, I.D.), using a gradient of acetonitrile-2 mM NH4COOH, pH 3 buffer (flow-rate 200 microl/min, post-column split 1:3). Detection is done by a Perkin-Elmer Sciex API-100 mass analyzer equipped with an ISP interface. In most instances the major ion observed is not [M+H]+ as expected, but [M+NH4]+. The influence of fiber source on fiber digestion and mean retention time was investigated. Six fibrous feedstuffs with wide differences in chemical composition and particle size were selected: paprika meal, olive leaves, alfalfa hay, soybean hulls, sodium hydroxide-treated barley straw, and sunflower hulls. Six diets were formulated to contain one of these ingredients as the sole source of fiber. Seed dispersal has become an important issue in plant ecology and restoration management. In this paper we examined dung germinating seed content and seed deposition patterns of horses (Shetland and Konik breeds) and Scottish Highland cattle grazing two coastal dune nature reserves. Two times 2.5 l of fresh dung from each type of herbivore were collected during seven sessions in the main fruiting season. Dung samples were placed under greenhouse conditions after drying and cooling. Animal defecation patterns were derived from a study of herbivore activities during 6 h observation sessions 8 times a month. One hundred and seventeen plant species i.e. 27% of all species occurring in the study area, were recorded as seedlings emerging from the dung samples. The most abundantly and frequently recorded plant species were Urtica dioica, Juncus spp. and different species of Poaceae and Caryophyllaceae. In general seedling density is high (1158 seedlings/dung sample). A travel-time based approach is developed for estimating first-order reaction rate coefficients for transport with nonequilibrium linear mass transfer in heterogeneous media. Tracer transport in the mobile domain is characterized by a travel-time distribution, and mass transfer rates are described by a convolution product of concentrations in the mobile domain and a memory function rather than predefining the mass transfer model. A constant first-order reaction is assumed to occur only in the mobile domain. Analytical solutions in Laplace domain can be derived for both conservative and reactive breakthrough curves (BTCs). Temporal-moment analyses are presented by using the first and second moments of conservative and reactive BTCs and the mass consumption of the reactant for an inverse Gaussian travel-time distribution. In terms of moment matching, there is no need for one to specify the mass transfer model. With the same capacity ratio and the mean retention time, all mass transfer models will lead to the same moment-derived reaction rate coefficients. In addition, the consideration of mass transfer generally yields larger estimations of the reaction rate coefficient than models ignoring mass transfer. Furthermore, the capacity ratio and the mean retention time have opposite influences on the estimation of the reaction rate coefficient: the first-order reaction rate coefficient is positively linearly proportional to the capacity ratio, but negatively linearly proportional to the mean retention time.
