A usable medical information system should allow for reliable and accurate interaction between users and the system in emergencies. A participatory design approach was used to develop a medical information system in two Turkish hospitals. The process consisted of task and user analysis, an icon design survey, initial icon design, final icon design and evaluation, and installation of the iconic medical information system with the icons. We observed work sites to note working processes and tasks related to the information system and interviewed medical personnel. Emergency personnel then participated in the design process to develop a usable graphical user interface, by drawing icon sketches for 23 selected tasks. The means of designing an effective user interface software package varies from one application to another. Almost the entire ICT infrastructure was damaged following the impact of the tsunami tidal wave. Under such circumstances, transporting critically ill patients is a must and becomes the first priority. Many considerations are needed when designing a specific user interface for emergency situations in developing countries. In this study we proposed how to design the user interface in order to support emergency medical care in the early stages of disasters. The user interface was classified into two tabs, firstly to indicate critically ill patients and secondly to notify details of the medicine having been administered to the patients. Classifying the user interface of emergency medical care information systems by using VHF radio connections will be beneficial, especially for the early stages of disaster-stricken developing countries, in order to preserve the lives of more victims.

This paper focuses on the information ethics in Malaysian paperless hospital because of the variability of human behaviour due to the very dynamic nature of cyber space. Currently, Malaysia had implemented two paperless hospitals. These hospitals are using computer information system as a medium to improve their operation efficiency. But at the moment, there is no code of ethics for the healthcare professionals in handling the patient's information using the computer. They only have code of conduct as a guide. This code of conduct focuses more on patient's care. The objective of this study is to design an ethical framework towards a successful paperless hospital implementation. The data will be collected by interview and questionnaires. It is hope that the ethical framework will help to increase the efficiency of medical information system in Malaysian public paperless hospital.

Hospital workers are highly mobile; they are constantly changing location to perform their daily work, which includes visiting patients, locating resources, such as medical records, or consulting with other specialists. The information required by these specialists is highly dependent on their location. Access to a patient's laboratory results might be more relevant when the physician is near the patient's bed and not elsewhere. We describe a location-aware medical information system that was developed to provide access to resources such as patient's records or the location of a medical specialist, based on the user's location. The system is based on a handheld computer which includes a trained backpropagation neural-network used to estimate the user's location and a client to access information from the hospital information system that is relevant to the user's current location.

The next generation of medical information system will integrate multimedia data to assist physicians in clinical decision-making, diagnoses, teaching, and research. This paper describes MIARS (Medical Image Annotation and Retrieval System). MIARS not only provides automatic annotation, but also supports text based as well as image based retrieval strategies, which play important roles in medical training, research, and diagnostics. The system utilizes three trained classifiers, which are trained using training images. The goal of these classifiers is to provide multi-level automatic annotation. Another main purpose of the MIARS system is to study image semantic retrieval strategy by which images can be retrieved according to different levels of annotation.
