Medieval Church Treasuries

En els darrers anys una sèrie d’estudis han intentat esbrinar, amb major o menor dificultat, com era el procés d’aprenentatge de l’artista romànic, quins eren els seus mètodes de treball i, finalment, quin era el seu estatus social. Amb aquest objectiu es va desenvolupar un projecte a la Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, en col·laboració amb el Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya i el Museu Episcopal de Vic, titulat -Artistas, patronos y público. Cataluña y el Mediterráneo (siglos XI-XV)-MAGISTRI CATALONIAE (MICINN HAR2011-23015)-, que es va dur a terme entre els anys 2012 i 2015.
    El XXIII Seminari de Romànic, dut a terme el 5 de juliol de 2014, va ser una activitat, en la qual els membres del projecte Magistri Cataloniae varen explicar algunes novetats. La present publicació recull aquells treballs així com el d’Iris Bautista Morenilla i Anna Nualart Torroja, de la Facultat de Belles Arts de la Universitat de Barcelona, ja que ens ha semblat pertinent que la recerca que aquestes dues investigadores havien realitzat sobre el pas del frontal d’altar als retaules primitius durant el segle XIII tingués una representació en aquest número monogràfic. El resultat és una revista en la qual participen persones d’una formació molt variada –historiadors de l’art, conservadors de museu i conservadors-restauradors- que busquen donar resposta a qüestions innovadores com l’estatus de las arts i els artistes a l’època romànica i els coneixements tècnics i materials dels seus protagonistes.

The paper takes a systematic approach to the hitherto unpublished relic of St John the Baptist's right arm which is kept in a cache in Siena cathedral. It includes the available historical information about the relic's journey from Serbia until its arrival in Siena (1464) and the circumstances in which it came into the possession of pope Pius II. It provides a detailed description both of the relic and of the reliquary, an exquisite piece of medieval goldsmithing and filigree work with few direct analogies. Particular attention is devoted to the inscription on the reliquary lid: " Right arm of John the Forerunner, cover me, Sava the Serbian archbishop. " Based on the inscription, the reliquary is identified as one of the founding objects of the treasury of the monastery of Žiča (the Serbian cathedral and coronation church) which was gradually built up in the first decades of the thirteenth century through the effort of Sava of Serbia. Discussed in the context of this topic are also the " veil " and the " cushion " , the luxurious textiles in which the Baptist's arm was brought to Siena.

The subject of this research are two valuable encolpia in the form of pectoral
medallions on a chain, worn around the neck, which once belonged to the Hopovo Monastery, and were preserved in the reliquary shrine of the Holy Great Martyr Teodor the Tyro. After the devastation and destruction that the Monastery experienced during the Second World War, these items came to the Museum of the Serbian Orthodox Church. The encolpia medallions, both with the representation of the Lord Jesus Christ, were made in the Middle Ages, in the form of sardonyx and horn (ivory) cameo. In the later period, these cameos got a fitting and a long silver gilded chain. Fittings were made of silver, and gold plated, with the use of semi-precious and decorative coloured glass stones. On the basis of a comparative analysis with related material, a new dating of the
mentioned encolpia is made in the paper: one encolpia cameo has been dated in 12th century, and the other in 14th century.

„Das Mittelalter“ diente seit seiner Erfindung in der Frühen Neuzeit für unterschiedliche Distinktions- und Identifikationswünsche. So wurde es um 1800 zur Projektionsfläche für neu entstehende, nationale und imperiale Politikinteressen. Diese Mittelalterbilder verleugneten ihren instrumentalen Charakter und wirken so, oft unerkannt, bis heute. Anhand der Aneignung mittelalterlich imaginierter Artefakte durch aristokratische und bürgerliche Sammler Ende des 18. und im Laufe des 19. Jahrhunderts sowie der gleichzeitigen spiegelbildlichen Abstoßung solcher Artefakte geht die Autorin der Frage nach der Produktion von Mittelalterbildern nach. Es werden widersprüchliche Interessen am "Mittelalter" offen gelegt und die kulturellen Dispositionen von Mittelaltermoden aufgedeckt. Zur Sprache kommen ein spätabsolutistisches Mittelalter in Wörlitz; eine bürgerlich anachronistische Glasmalerei-Sammlung in Zürich, deren durch nun entstehende öffentliche Sammlungsinteressen bewegten Weg über Schlesien zurück in die Schweiz; die widersprüchliche Ungleichzeitigkeit preußisch-höfischer Privatsammlungen in Glienicke mit ihrem auratischen Ausweichen in byzantinisierende Herrschaftsmotive sowie die gleichzeitige europäische Zerstreuung des Basler Münsterschatzes in neuen, rivalisierenden ständischen und nationalen Kontexten.
