Mediterranean migration crisis

Short article drawing on initial findings of MEDMIG research (www.medmig.info) to argue that stories of ‘mass movement’ into Greece that dominated political and media narrative in relation to Europe's 'migration crisis' in 2015 conceal a much more complex picture. Migration policy is currently driven by moral and political panic, patchy knowledge and broad assumptions about the people at the heart of the story: refugees and migrants themselves. Understanding the dynamics of migration across the Aegean provides an insight into the needs, fears and aspirations of those on the move, enables a more effective humanitarian response and challenges political and media representations of refugees and migrants as an undifferentiated mass.

Οι συνεχείς προσφυγικές-μεταναστευτικές ροές προς την Ελλάδα και άλλες γειτονικές χώρες δημιουργούν ένα πρωτόγνωρο, σε αριθμό ατόμων, ζήτημα ανθρωπιστικής κρίσης. Μεταξύ άλλων, προβλήματα όπως η διατροφή, η διαμονή, η εκπαίδευση, η απασχόληση, η ασφάλεια και η υγεία απασχολούν καθημερινά τις κρατικές αρχές. Ειδικά η εφαρμογή πολιτικών υγείας στις ευάλωτες αυτές ομάδες, αποτελεί πεδίο ιδιαίτερης στρατηγικής, αφού η αντιμετώπιση προβλημάτων που χρήζουν ιατρικής φροντίδας, περίθαλψης και νοσοκομειακής κάλυψης απαιτούν ειδικούς χειρισμούς, λόγω του αριθμού των ατόμων και των φυλετικών θρησκευτικών ιδιαιτεροτήτων των ανθρώπων αυτών.
Σύμφωνα με τα ευρήματα της έρευνας το Ελληνικό Κράτος αδυνατούσε να προσφέρει πλήρη ιατροφαρμακευτική κάλυψη στο σύνολο των προσφύγων-μεταναστών, λόγω του τεράστιου όγκου ατόμων αλλά και της οικονομικής κατάστασης στην οποία βρίσκεται. Στην αντιμετώπιση του προβλήματος συνέβαλαν Διεθνείς Οργανισμοί, η Ε.Ε. και ΜΚΟ που επιχειρούν στον χώρο τις υγείας. Η παροχή έμψυχου δυναμικού, ιατροφαρμακευτικού υλικού αλλά και χρηματικών πόρων από εξωγενείς παράγοντες (προαναφερθείσες πηγές) αναβάθμισαν τις παρεχόμενες υγειονομικές καλύψεις προς τους πρόσφυγες- μετανάστες.
Ο αριθμός των μεταναστών-προσφύγων και οι ιδιαιτερότητές τους επηρεάζουν τις
παρεχόμενες υπηρεσίες υγείας. Το Ελληνικό Κράτος δέχεται την αρωγή από εξωγενείς παράγοντες αφού η ιατροφαρμακευτική κάλυψη των ανθρώπων αυτών είναι απαραίτητη για τους ίδιους και για τον γηγενή πληθυσμό. Η συστηματική συνεργασία του Ελληνικού Κράτους με πιστοποιημένους φορείς – παρόχους υγείας μπορεί να αποτρέψει επιδημικά κρούσματα και να προστατέψει την δημόσια υγεία περιορίζοντας το κόστος που τελικά θα βαρύνει τους Έλληνες και Ευρωπαίους φορολογούμενους.

Between September 2015 and November 2016 a team of researchers led by the Centre for Trust, Peace and Social Relations (CTPSR) at Coventry University, working in collaboration with University of Birmingham’s Institute for Research into Superdiversity and the Centre on Migration, Policy and Society at the University of Oxford, conducted research into the ‘migration crisis’ at the borders of southern Europe. The MEDMIG project provides the first large-scale, systematic and comparative study of the backgrounds, experiences, routes and aspirations of refugees and migrants in three EU Member States – Italy, Greece and Malta – and Turkey. This article focuses on the securitization of migration in Greece through the case of the Evros anti-immigrant fence. The fence was constructed in 2012 with the aim to limit the flow of irregular migration from Turkey to Greece. This paper explores the reasons why the Greek government decided to build the fence and its political implications by focusing on the securitization of migration in Greece both through practices and through securitizing rhetoric. The paper argues that the construction of the Evros fence is closely associated with changing perceptions of threat and the framing of migrants as risky and threatening both at the national and the EU levels.

Post-traumatic conditions are the result of the wounding of bodily or psychic borders. As trauma studies has shown, they are framed and often propogated culturally. Crossing territorial borders can cause traumas: the crossing of the border by migrants and others often involves the crossing of their own bodily or psychic borders. This article will examine autobiographies and novels published in Swedish and Norwegian for the way in which they figure the traumatic effects of migrant border crossings. It will apply a border aesthetics approach, bringing the status of aesthetic narratives as borderings of the sensible (cf. Rancière’s concept of the “partage de sensible”) together with the bordering of the sensible which takes place in the fixations, substitutions and blindspots of trauma. It will argue that published narratives of migrant border-crossing introduce a longer, despectacularizing temporality to the border traumas they involve, necessitating investigation of cultural memory in diasporic and multi-generational contexts.

This Research Brief presents our emerging findings in relation to refugees and migrants who travelled via the Eastern Mediterranean Route from Turkey to Greece during 2015. This research was undertaken as part of the ESRC-funded project 'Unravelling Europe's Migration Crisios' (MEDMIG). This brief focuses on four main themes: The factors affecting the decision to leave; Journeys and routes taken to reach Greece; Intended destinations of those migrating; and the use of smugglers to facilitate the journey. The European Union institutions have made a major effort in the fight
against terrorism during last times. EU fighting against terrorism began
before Madrid railway massacre in 2004. Anti terrorism initiative
demands better cooperation between EU Institutions, Agencies and
Member States.
This paper is a tribute to Ignacio Echeverría. Ignacio is a Spanish hero
that who lived fighting against money laundering into banking
institutions and he died hitting with his skateboard to several terrorists

First report of the ESRC-funded project 'Unravelling Europe's Migration Crisis' (MEDMIG) exploring the dynamics of movement across the Mediterranean to Europe. The report differentiates between the Central and Eastern Mediterranean routes providing an overview of who is travelling through each route, the differences and similarities between them and the European policy response. La Unión Europea, a través de su Sistema Europeo Común de Asilo (SECA), ha intentado hacer frente a estas olas migratorias, pero hasta ahora parece no lograr regular la situación como debería en virtud de los principios de solidaridad y colaboración entre sus Estados miembros. La propuesta de la Comisión de septiembre de 2020 si bien intenta ser un avance, no lograr un consenso entre los Estados de la Unión Europea. La situación a la que se ha enfrentado la Unión desde febrero de 2022 debido a la inmigración masiva llegada desde Ucrania ha mostrado una gestión del asilo sin precedentes, y parecería ser el modelo a seguir si se quiere lograr una normativa que realmente haga frente a la situación considerando a la totalidad de la Unión y no solo a unos pocos.
