Metabiology

Premier ouvrage de l’histoire de la philosophie à être totalement consacré au concept d’entéléchie, il ne s’agira pas de proposer un essai historique allant de la mise en place de cette notion chez Aristote jusqu’à la conception biologique développée par Hans Driesch. Inscrit dans un projet plus global de compréhension du temps aristotélicien, c’est à une véritable refondation métaphysique du concept que ce travail nous convie. Si Kant, à l’ultime fin de sa première critique, avait admis qu’il n’existait que deux voies possibles de fondation de l’a priori - la voie historique (platonicienne) empruntée par Hegel et la voie physiologique (aristotélicienne) qui sera la nôtre - la première partie de ce second volume prendra pour acquis qu’il n’existe pas de théorie qui puisse unifier ces deux pôles du savoir. Cela impliquera une scission entre deux mouvements irrationnels que sont le mouvement entéléchique aristotélicien et le mouvement dialectique platonicien. A partir du corps a priori du surhomme, le premier mouvement sera à la racine de la théorie de la connaissance (De la science) alors que le second sera au fondement de la théorie des valeurs (De l’Idéologie). En circonscrivant le mouvement dialectique dorien autour du noûs perse (iranien), ce travail offrira une première définition totalement négative du mouvement entéléchique appuyé, lui, sur le noûs ionien (« phénicien ») dont la seconde partie sera l’objet. De l’analyse de la substance première en passant par l’étude phénoménologique des schèmes de la camusité et du membre moteur, cette étude reviendra sur l’élasticité du tendon afin d’approcher non-phénoménalement le concept lui-même et tenter ainsi une première symphyse avec les rythmes circadiens de la biologie contemporaine.

In  this  article,  we  will  show  that  uncomputability  is  a  relative property  not  only  of  oracle  Turing  machines,  but  also  of  subrecursive classes. We will define the concept of a Turing submachine, and a recursive relative  version  for  the  Busy Beaver  function which we  will  call  Busy Beaver Plus function. Therefore, we will prove that the computable Busy Beaver Plus function defined on any Turing submachine is not computable by any program running on this submachine. We will thereby demonstrate the existence of a “paradox” of computability a la Skolem: a function is computable when “seen from the outside” the subsystem, but uncomputable when “seen from within” the same subsystem. Finally, we will raise the possibility of defining universal submachines,  and a hierarchy of negative Turing degrees.

Metabiology is a mathematical theory mainly based on algorithmic information theory and allows us to study an open-ended evolution of programs, that is, to study how fast the organisms/programs become more complex or more creative without never stagnate at a maximum level of complexity or creativity. We take, as starting point, the first chaitinian metabiological models in which the organisms are computable systems, Nature (or environment) is a hyper-computable system, mutations are randomly generated computable systems (that is, random algorithmic mutations) and the fitnesses are measured by how big is the output of the organisms. In this context, this paper focuses on two questions: Assuming that organisms are uncomputable systems, should metabiology become unsuitable or unsound? Or, on the other hand, assuming that Nature itself is a computable system, should metabiology become unsuitable or unsound? Thus, the main purpose is to demonstrate that metabiology walks towards a general theory of open-ended evolutionary systems, whether these systems are sub-computable, computable or hyper-computable. As a secondary purpose we show that scientific and philosophical consequences of our mathematical results spread across fundamental questions about biology and artificial life, as well as, about physics and artificial intelligence. To satisfy these two objectives, we build two new metabiological models for two new different configurations of organisms and nature. First, we demonstrate it is possible to build a metabiological evolution in which nature is a computable system and, hence, it makes the organisms and mutations to be sub-computable systems. To show this we introduce the recursive relative uncomputability (a computable/recursive version of the relative uncomputability that occurs among different Turing degrees). We do with Turing, Radó and Chaitin the same Skolem did with Cantor by making a relativization of the Busy-Beaver´s uncomputability in relation to the Omega number, so that this new uncomputability
can exist between a computer and any of his sub-computers. As a consequence, we introduce the “paradox” of uncomputability which says that exists at least one function that is not computable if we “look from the inside”, but that is computable if we “look from the outside”. Further, we correlate this pseudo-paradox with problems of human creativity and artificial intelligence and with problems of consciousness, artificial life and the computability of the Universe. Second, we build a metabiological model for the evolution of hyper-programs in which the organisms are hyper-computable systems of any finite order and nature is a hyper-program of ordinal order omega. In this last model we demonstrate it is possible an evolution of organisms/hyper-programs, with just “blind” random algorithmic mutations (it means, that do not take into consideration previous organisms/hyper-programs), which progressively leads the organisms/hyper-programs to be able of solving any problem in the arithmetical hierarchy. Allied to this, we discuss about computability or uncomputability of “living beings” and upon the possibility of mathematically studying metabiological evolutionary systems that can surpass, as much as we want, the “frontier” of the computable.

Podemos chamar o famoso “paradoxo” de Skolem de um pseudoparadoxo metalinguístico da denumerabilidade: de dentro do sistema um conjunto não é enumerável enquanto que de fora do sistema ele pode ser. O mesmo fenômeno aparece em relação à computabilidade, ou seja, existe um pseudoparadoxo metalinguístico da computabilidade? No qual “de dentro” algo é incomputável enquanto que “de fora” esse algo pode ser computável? É na metabiologia que esse fenômeno surge para ajudar a responder a pergunta sobre como ficaria a evolução dos organismos/programas sujeitos a mutações algorítmicas aleatórias numa natureza computável, visto que nos primeiros modelos demonstrados por Gregory Chaitin isso se dá numa natureza oracular, um hipercomputador.

We show that metabiology is not restricted to the study of the evolution of programs or the evolution of computable systems. Inspired by the concept of hyper-computation, that is, by the idea of programs having access to a Turing oracle, we propose a model for the evolution of hyper-programs, which are non-computable systems. Metabiology´s basic theorem that software living beings will become more and more creative – with Nature as an infinite source of random mutations and new information – still holds. However, in studying the evolution of hyper-programs we need to consider a much more powerful source of new information, our new Nature, that is capable of answering any arithmetical question, in other words, that is a complete system with respect to the arithmetical hierarchy.

This article presents a theoretical investigation of computation beyond the Turing barrier from emergent behavior in distributed systems. In particular, we present an algorithmic network that is a mathematical model of a networked population of randomly generated computable systems with a fixed communication protocol. Then, in order to solve an undecidable problem, we study how nodes (i.e., Turing machines or computable systems) can harness the power of the metabiological selection and the power of information sharing (i.e., communication) through the network. Formally, we show that there is a pervasive network topological condition, in particular, the small-diameter phenomenon, that ensures that every node becomes capable of solving the halting problem for every program with a length upper bounded by a logarithmic order of the population size. In addition, we show that this result implies the existence of a central node capable of emergently solving the halting problem in the minimum number of communication rounds. Furthermore, we introduce an algorithmic-informational measure of synergy for networked computable systems, which we call local algorithmic synergy. Then, we show that such algorithmic network can produce an arbitrarily large value of expected local algorithmic synergy.

Entendendo a metabiologia como uma teoria matemática para evolução de programas ou de sistemas computáveis, inspirada pela – e voltada para – evolução biológica, esse artigo tem como objetivo discutir - e introduzir - sobre a evolução metabiológica de sistemas não computáveis. Estes últimos, chamaremos de hiperprogramas. Tomaremos como referência principal o modelo de evolução cumulativa já apresentado por Gregory Chaitin para, com isso, ver se resultado análogo pode ser obtido para a evolução de hiperprogramas. Ultrapassaremos o computável, passando pela completude da aritmética e indo além.

We discuss a mathematical metatheory of biological evolution that employs a version of information theory called algorithmic information theory [1]. As indicated by "meta," here the tension between map and territory or between theory and phenomena is particularly acute. The normal information-theoretic view of evolution is that it increases the information in the genome about the environment until the organisms are fully adapted to their environment, at which point evolution stagnates until there are changes in the environment. However, metabiology focuses on unending biological creativity and on the consequences of viewing DNA as software, which leads to a completely different information-theoretic perspective on evolution, but still incorporating information from the environment.

We discuss metabiology at a conceptual and methodological level in the light of a permeable pluralistic epistemology (CHAITIN, V., 2009). Permeable pluralistic epistemology studies interdisciplinary research and provides criteria for evaluating whether or not it is fertile to combine different conceptual frameworks, vocabularies, research techniques and methods.

Unravelling Complexity was published by World Scientific in Singapore in 2020, and is edited by Wuppuluri and Doria. In the Foreword to this volume, Virginia Chaitin makes some observations about her husband Gregory Chaitin's cognitive style.

Um campo, por essência, transdisciplinar é criado quando a teoria algorítmica da informação se propõe a resolver uma questão da biologia. Possivelmente, a questão mais importante: a evolução dos seres vivos. A partir daí, velhos problemas, tanto biológicos quanto matemáticos, são retomados, assim como, emergem novas questões a serem respondidas ou não. É sobre esta última frase e sobre os trabalhos de Gregory J. Chaitin que a presente discussão se desdobra.  O que é o ser vivo? Podemos responder isso dizendo que o DNA é um software. Na metabiologia um programa de computador é tratado como uma representação do organismo biológico.  Abre-se todo um leque de possibilidades de interpretações sobre que tipos de relações recursivas entre ser vivo e meio-ambiente satisfazem tal hipótese representativa.
Outro pressuposto na base da teoria metabiológica é tomar a aptidão do programa/organismo pelo tamanho do número que ele consegue calcular. Temos aqui uma forma quantitativa de medição de uma propriedade da relação do ser vivo com a natureza. Então, o que esse número que um programa é capaz de calcular poderia simbolizar?
No artigo de referência vários resultados já nos são apresentados. Um tipo de evolução, aquela dada por uma busca exaustiva no espaço de todas as mutações, é indicada como o modelo errado, justamente, pela velocidade da evolução não corresponder (a princípio) com a biológica. Mas estaria, de qualquer forma, esse modelo fadado ao fracasso? O outro modelo que nos trás uma melhor semelhança com o biológico passa por um tipo de progressão na qual as mutações são “direcionadas”, isto é, na qual somente é permitido um tipo específico de mutação – aquele que sempre visa se aproximar cada vez mais do número Omega. Quais características algum outro número oracular precisaria ter para satisfazer esse modelo? De fato, para ele funcionar é necessário algum sistema na natureza equivalente a uma Oracle Machine. Mas esta é a única forma de chegarmos a resultados satisfatórios dentro da metabiologia?
Chegamos, por esse caminho, a possibilidades e algumas perguntas. Além de discuti-las de forma mais ampla, serão apresentadas possíveis soluções.

However, metabiology focuses on unending biological creativity and on the consequences of viewing DNA as software, which leads to a completely different information-theoretic perspective on evolution, but still incorporating information from the environment.

This paper attempts to delineate a 20th century movement towards the formation of a truly 'deductive' metabiology. The aim is to reify and crystallize the historical reality of this new meta-biological ‘movement’ by suggesting that what essentially united it was an ontological or epistemically heuristic commitment to a biological vision whose grammar and syntax were provided by utilising non-classical forms of qualitative rather than quantitative mathematical modelling and expression. The paper primarily focusses on the anti-Darwinian metabiology of the Canadian born, yet UK domiciled, biologist Brian Goodwin, as well as comparing and contrasting his ideas withose those of other metabiological thinkers such as Per Alberch, Hal Waddington, Rene Thom and Vladimir Vernadsky. It is the contention of this paper that, historically, the purest expression and the philosophical consummation of many of the meta-biological ideas propounded by Goodwin and others can actually be found in the extraordinary metaphysical vision of Benedict de Spinoza (1632-1677) particularly as expressed in his posthumously published masterpiece the Ethics (1677), and so this paper concludes with an account of the meta-biological relevance of Spinoza’s thinking in relation to these more modern metabiological thinkers, not in order to indicate direct influence, but as an attempt to reveal the potential metabiological inspiration of such an metaphysical hermeneutic for those concerned to increasingly understand the phenomenon of 'life' in deductive terms.

A metabiologia é uma teoria matemática baseada, principalmente, na teoria da informação algorítmica, nos permitindo estudar a evolução open-ended de programas, isto é, estudar quão rápido os organismos/programas se tornam mais complexos ou mais criativos, sem nunca estagnar num nível máximo de complexidade ou criatividade. Tomamos como base os modelos metabiológicos originais chaitinianos, nos quais os organismos são sistemas computáveis (i.e., sistemas emuláveis por um computador), a natureza (ou meio-ambiente) é um sistema hipercomputável (i.e., um sistema emulável apenas por algum hipercomputador), as mutações são sistemas computáveis aleatoriamente gerados (i.e., mutações algorítmicas aleatórias) e a aptidão dos organismos é medida estritamente por quão grande é o output desses organismos. Nesse âmbito, este trabalho se foca em responder duas questões. A metabiologia seria inapropriada se os organismos não forem sistemas computáveis? Ou, na direção oposta, ela seria inapropriada se a própria Natureza for um sistema computável? Portanto, o objetivo principal é mostrar que a metabiologia caminha em direção a uma teoria geral para evolução open-ended de qualquer sistema, seja ele subcomputável, computável ou hipercomputável. Como objetivo secundário, mostramos que as consequências científicas e filosóficas dos nossos resultados matemáticos podem se alastrar pelas questões fundamentais da biologia e vida artificial, como também, da física e da inteligência artificial. Para satisfazer esses dois objetivos, construímos dois novos modelos metabiológicos para duas configurações, diferentes entre si, de organismos e natureza. Primeiro, mostramos que é possível a evolução metabiológica de subprogramas, dentro da qual tomamos a natureza como sendo computável, o que fez com que os organismos e as mutações passassem a sistemas subcomputáveis. Para essa demonstração, apresentamos e utilizamos o fenômeno da incomputabilidade relativa recursiva (uma versão computável/recursiva da incomputabilidade relativa que ocorre entre as diferentes ordens de hipercomputadores dentro da hierarquia dos graus de Turing). Fazemos com Turing, Radó e Chaitin o que Skolem fez com Cantor: relativizamos a incomputabilidade da função Busy-Beaver atrelada ao número Ω para ela existir, de modo análogo, entre um computador e qualquer subcomputador do mesmo. Em decorrência, apresentamos o “paradoxo” da computabilidade, o qual diz que existe, pelo menos, uma função que não é computável se “olhada de dentro”, mas é computável se “olhada de fora”. Então, correlacionamos esse pseudoparadoxo com problemas da criatividade humana e inteligência artificial, da consciência, da vida artificial e da computabilidade do Universo. Segundo, construímos um modelo metabiológico para a evolução de hiperprogramas, no qual os organismos são sistemas hipercomputáveis de qualquer ordem finita (dentro da hierarquia de Turing) e a natureza é um hiperprograma de ordem ordinal ω. Nesse último modelo, mostramos que é possível uma evolução de organismos/hiperprogramas por meio de mutações algorítmicas aleatórias “cegas” (i.e., que não levam em conta os organismos/hiperprogramas anteriores) que vai levando os organismos/hiperprogramas a serem capazes de resolver qualquer problema na hierarquia aritmética. Aliado a isso, discutimos sobre a computabilidade ou incomputabilidade dos seres vivos e sobre a possibilidade de estudar matematicamente a evolução metabiológica de sistemas que podem ultrapassar, o quanto se queira, a “barreira” do computável.
