Adaptive Architecture is a multidisciplinary field concerned with structures that are designed to adapt to their environments, their inhabitants, and objects as well as those structures that are entirely driven by human needs. This tendency has been encouraged by its multidisciplinary nature, developments across architecture, material technology, and the temporary technological structure research field. This paper aims to allow readers to take a step ahead advancing the exploration in technology and new design tools with thematic past and future links across this exciting, emerging field of lightweight structures in architecture with a particular focus on housing design. Concerning the potential of integrating live forms and structures to provide flexible, adaptable as well as transformable living spaces in contrary to massive and heavy materials which grant opportunity for permanent and safe living spaces. To this aim, it presents a cross-disciplinary framework of adaptive lightweight architecture that contains a reversible construction process rather than a linear design process and discussing the new method of work announcing our habitats by introducing the key interlinked components of the degree of adaptability of living space. This is followed by a brief outline of overarching strategies and a design proposal that can be employed in this context.

This paper focuses on the language processing tool being developed at our centre and briefly describes two of its applications. CATCG, our morphosyntactic analyser, is designed to deal with general written Catalan text. In CATCG the whole processing task has been divided into specific subtasks and for each one of them we try to apply the best strategy available. The most relevant properties of our system are its robustness, the fact that we have given reusability a very high priority, and the goal of acquiring linguistic information by fully automatic means. The paper is structured as follows: section 1 and 2 explicate and describe the global architecture of CATCG. Section 3 shows the output of CATCG and gives data on its performance. Section 4 describes two projects to which CATCG is being applied: BancTrad and PrADo. Section 5 presents our plans for future work. Section 6 closes the paper with some conclusions. 1. Automatic language processing requires as rigorous a lexical inventory as possible. For this purpose, we have developed a morphological dictionary for French, conceived as the starting point of a modular system (Morfetik) which includes an inflection generator, user interfaces and operating tools. In this paper, we briefly describe the basic dictionary (lexicon of simple words) and detail some of

`Plasmo', a novel designed fast signal processor based device has been developed. We use this modular system for the immediate evaluation of the quality of laser material processing. With this tool the machining process can be analyzed in real-time. An adaptable algorithm ensures that this system automatically adapts to parameter fluctuations during welding or cutting. A summary of our experience in the use in car industry is presented in this paper. We also present new ideas and first results to expand this system to detect the full spectrum of emitted light during process instead of two wavelengths used up to now.

Early system-level life cycle assessments facilitate cost effective optimization of system architectures to enable implementation of both modularity and in-space assembly, two key Exploration Systems Research & Technology (ESR&T) Strategic Challenges. Experiences with the International Space Station (ISS) demonstrate that the absence of this rigorous analysis can result in increased cost and operational risk. An effort is underway, called Analysis of In-Space Assembly of Modular Systems, to produce an innovative analytical methodology, including an evolved analysis toolset and proven processes in a collaborative engineering environment, to support the design and evaluation of proposed concepts. The unique aspect of this work is that it will produce the toolset, techniques and initial products to analyze and compare the detailed, life cycle costs and performance of different implementations of modularity for in-space assembly. Financial markets mirror the evolution of real economic industries as much as they influence them reciprocally. In this paper we show an approach how to connect both. We will focus on the impact of industrial dynamics on financial markets. Real economic sectors as well as financial markets will be modelled using agent-based modelling techniques. Boundedly rational agents build up the endogenous evolution of an entrepreneurially driven industry, thereby substantiating the role of knowledge diffusion. Boundedly rational investors in the financial market learn about new industries and trade the corresponding shares. The complete model will be set up as a modular system which will allow investigating various scenarios.

This paper presents a DSP based equipment aimed for power electronics and motor control applications that, in opposite with conventional training equipments, provides a great flexibility to design several applications. The equipment is a modular system with a DC power supply, three-phase MOS-bridge, a signal acquisition system, a DSP development kit and several loads, i.e. DC or AC motors and passive loads. This platform allows to deliver higher power than similar educational power electronic kits. The platform has galvanic isolation between the control system and the power plant. It also has several protections that make easy interaction between the student and the platform. We also show two typical applications: a voltage-frequency control for a low-voltage three-phase induction motor and a voltage regulation system for a buck converter. The students are able to program these applications in the laboratory or by an e-learning web platform.

A system architecture, and a hardware implementation leveraging the architecture, has been developed for energy-aware, networked, embedded systems designed for use in tactical unattended ground sensor (UGS) applications. This modular system architecture is designed around a flexible bus design that meets the needs for low-power embedded systems, incorporating support for 32-bit inter-module data transfers, module synchronization, power control, and power distribution. A Linux-based software framework operating on the main system processor has been developed to provide application developers with the ability to easily leverage the hardware functionality of the system. The low-power design methods employed in the system design are discussed along with a system implementation using these methods.

Latent heat energy storage through phase-change materials (PCMs) is one possible strategy to control interior temperatures in buildings, improve thermal comfort, and passively reduce building energy use associated with heating and cooling. While PCMs integrated into building structure elements have been studied since the 1970s, challenges of integrating PCMs into building materials while maintaining their heat storage benefits have limited their application in practice. The recent introduction of microencapsulated phase-change materials provides the energy storage capability of PCMs in micron-scale, chemically-inert capsules that can be easily integrated into composite materials such as gypsum wallboard and concrete. The size and physical properties of microencapsulated PCMs suggest that they will behave similarly to filler materials in concrete. Such filler materials are generally less than 125 μm in diameter and can increase concrete strength when added to a mix. This study uses t...

This paper highlights a method of using open-source CAD (Computer Aided Design) software and CAM (Computer Aided Manufacturing) in the manufacturing of building assembly systems. With the increase use of CAD/CAM technologies, and internet access on a global scale, we investigate open platforms to improve global production of modular systems and tackle fundamental building manufacturing systems for global application. This paper, examines a method of producing designs from conception to manufacture, using custom algorithms written in open-source CAD software. This system is geared primarily for the construction of buildings using moldable composite materials for housing developments in urban and rural regions in developing countries. The objective of this research is to create a system that is flexible for influencing and incorporating culture, design preference, and geographical innovation.
