Noise Pollution Management

The present study dealt with the noise mapping of Sahbagh (study area) to find out the actual scenario of noise pollution of the area. The sound level data was collected at three specific times of a day (9am-12pm, 2pm-4pm, & 6pm-8pm) in 170 location points of the study area for two different day situations (workday & holiday). After the standardization of sound level data, two GIS software (Surfer v.8 & ILEWIS v.3) along with graphic software were used to produce six noise maps of three specified times (9am-12pm, 2pm-4pm, & 6pm-8pm) for two different day situations (Holiday & Workday). The interpretation of noise maps showed that BIRDEM hospital, BSMMU, Shisu Park, and roadside shops were among the noise vulnerable zones which are exposed to the noise level >75dB . The highest noise level (Lday: 9am-12pm- 86dB (A); Location ID: E21) was recorded when the traffic load was high in a workday. The sound level was low (<55dB (A)) in the area which had vegetation cover in spite of high traffic noise at outdoor (e.g. Charukola institute, Public Library, Sohrawardi Park, South-western part of Shisu Park, inside the Sahbagh Thaana, Dhaka club, and northern part of BTF were such places). It was also observed from the noise maps that the most noise vulnerable times were 9am-12pm & 6pm-8pm for the workday situations and 2pm-4pm & 6pm-8pm for the holiday situations. The noise level in every location at three specified times for two different day situations was higher than the nationally & internationally recommended value for the mixed area. At last, the noise maps were proved to be very useful in illustrating the actual scenario of noise pollution.

In the present era, air and noise pollution is the growing hazardous issue. It is necessary to monitor air quality and keep it under control #or a better #uture and healthy living #or all. This project is an air and noise pollution monitoring system that can monitor air pollution and sound pollution in particular areas through IoT which would be a way to make our place a smart city. This system uses air sensors to sense presence o# harm#ul gases/compounds in the air and constantly transmits this data to microcontroller. Also system keeps measuring sound level and reports it to the online server over IOT. The sensors interact with microcontroller which processes this data and transmits it over internet. This allows authorities to monitor air pollution in di#ferent areas and take action against it. Authorities can keep a watch on the noise pollution near industries, schools, hospitals and no honking areas. I# system detects air quality and noise issues, it alerts authorities so that they can take necessary measures to control the issue.

The aim of this study is to investigate the impact of aircraft noise pollution on community and workers' health near Abu Dhabi International Airport. This study was conducted in residential neighborhoods and employment areas living and working within a 25-km radius of the airport with high exposure to aircraft noise and in matched control areas far from the airport (outside the 25-km radius) and are unaffected by aircraft noise. Data was collected by conducting a revealed-preference face-to-face interview surveys among the residents and the workers nea rand far from Abu Dhabi International Airport during the months of September and December 2014. A total of 5,070 residents in both areas (2,579 near the airport and 2,492 far from the airport) and 1,995 workers in both areas (995 near the airport and 1,000 far from the airport) were interviewed and completed the questionnaire. Binomial Logit Regression Model was used to determine the impact of aircraft noise on community and workers' health. After controlling for confounders, the health of the residents adjacent to the airport who have been chronically exposed to high aircraft noise level are found to be worse than the control group. The results show that residents from the noise exposure area have a high level of noise stress, hypertension, headache, general disturbance, loss of sleep/insomnia, and hearing problems than the matched control area. On the other hand, aircraft noise pollution near Abu Dhabi Airport has no negative impact on workers adjacent to the airport. The impact of aircraft noise on community health should not restrain the growth of air travel industry in the city as this growth is essential and beneficial to the whole nation's economy. The reduction of aircraft noise level in the exposed area could be achieved by imposing policies, codes of practices, and action noise plans to assess and evaluate land use management as an effective tool for mitigating aircraft noise. Future research should assess community health based on self-reported physician diagnosed blood pressure; and hearing, stress, headache diagnostic examination.

Landfill site selection is a challenging task for many municipalities of the developing countries. Initial goal of municipalities regarding landfill site management is to protect the health of citizens, particularly of low income group people. Secondary goals include promotion of environmental quality, sustainability and employment generation. Remote sensing and Geographic Information System (GIS) plays an important role in sanitary landfill site selection studies. The study was initially done to assess about the present solid waste management situation at Aurangabad and to prepare a database about the waste situations of the study area. Methodology includes digitization of data, performing buffering operation and finally overlay analysis has been done. Five sites are found to be appropriate for landfill after performing an overlay analysis. This study indicates that the use of GIS system is efficient for selecting appropriate locations for municipal solid waste landfill.

Noise Pollution has become a serious health issue nowadays and emerging as a serious pollutant. This study is carried out in three semiurban towns to evaluate the impact of noise pollution in these areas. A total of 69 locations are selected in Asansol, Bankura, and Midnapore town including the Silent, Residential, Commercial, and Industrial zone. Since the noise level varies with atmospheric conditions, hence the study is divided into premonsoon, monsoon, and post-monsoon seasons. L1, L5, L10, L50, L90, L95, L99, Equivalent sound pressure level (Leq), Noise climate (NC), Noise pollution level (Lnp), and Noise traffic Index (TNI) were computed for evaluating the intensity of noise pollution. The result reveals that the equivalent sound pressure level (Leq) is much higher than the standards in all locations of the silent zones. Noise pollution level (Lnp) and Noise traffic Index (TNI) are also computed high in commercial and heavy traffic zones. The Noise climate (NC) value shows not much variation in noise intensity with pre-post and monsoon climates. This is a pioneer study on noise quality evaluation in these locations. This study will further help in preparing future management plans to combat noise pollution in these areas.

ABSTRAK Gangguan pendengaran yang disebabkan oleh kebisingan di lingkungan pekerjaan telah menjadi perhatian para peneliti. Pemerintah memberikan aturan secara jelas mengenai ambang batas mengenai kebisingan di lingkungan kerja dalam kaitannya dengan pencegahan penyakit akibat kerja. Makalah ini menganalisa paparan kebisingan kerja dan penggunaan alat pelindung diri kebisingan pada beberapa industri yang berbeda di Jakarta. Kuesioner digunakan untuk menggali informasi pada responden yang dianggap berpotensi terpapar oleh kebisingan di lingkungan kerjanya. Responden dipilih secara acak yaitu 400 orang pekerja pada 3 lingkungan industri yang berbeda seperti permesinan, industri daur ulang biji plastik, dan industri konveksi. Studi menunjukkan bahwa industri permesinan memiliki tingkat kebisingan yang lebih tinggi, yaitu sekitar 97 dB, sedangkan industry pengolahan biji plastik sekitar 92 dB dan industry konveksi sekitar 65 dB. Proporsi terbesar penggunaan APD adalah wanita yaitu sekitar 75% sementara laki-laki hanya sekitar 65%. Sedangkan berdasarkan usia, diperoleh informasi bahwa usia responden 21-35 tahun merupakan pengguna APD terbesar yaitu sekitar 67.8% dan usia di atas 46 tahun menggunakan APD sekitar 37.2%. Para stakeholder mempunyai peranan yang cukup penting dalam upaya mereduksi potensi risiko yang dapat muncul dari paparan tingkat kebisingan pada lingkungan pekerjaan serta senantiasa memperhatikan faktor-faktor kesehatan dan keselamatan kerja (K3) karyawan. ABSTRACT Hearing loss caused by noise in the work environment has become a concern to the researchers. Government gives clear rules on thresholds regarding noise in the workplace in relation to the prevention of occupational diseases. This paper analyzes occupational noise exposure and the use of personal protective equipment noise in several different industries in Jakarta. The questionnaire used to gather information on the respondents were considered potentially exposed to noise in the work environment. Respondents are randomly selected 400 people working on 3 different industrial environments such as machinery, industrial recycled plastic pellets, and industrial convection. Studies show that the machinery industry has a higher noise level, which is about 97 dB, while the plastic resin processing industry around 92 dB and 65 dB convection industry. The largest proportion of women is the use of PPE is about 75% while the male is only about 65%. Meanwhile, based on age, obtained information that the respondents aged 21-35 years is the largest user of PPE which is about 67.8% and above 46 years of age to use PPE approximately 37.2%. The stakeholders have an important role in the effort to reduce the potential risks that can arise from exposure to noise levels in the work environment and to always pay attention to the factors of health and safety (K3) employees.

As urbanization takes place, noise from construction activities adversely affects the quality of life of those living in the vicinity of the activities and poses a challenge to government regulatory agencies. This paper describes an innovative noise management platform that has been developed to (i) manage and monitor noise due to construction activities remotely, (ii) diagnose the cause of noise even under a multiple-site condition, and (ii) inform the public in an understandable manner to build trust and demonstrate transparency when necessary. The design, hardware, and software of the platform are introduced. An illustrative case is used to demonstrate the application and use of this platform.
