A rare case of extramedullary plasmacytoma arising from the nasal septum with localized amyloid deposition is reported. A 75-year-old woman presented with a history of post-nasal discharge and nasal obstruction for several months. Endonasal endoscopic observation revealed the presence of a mass arising from her nasal septum with an extension to the nasopharynx. No cervical lymph nodes were palpable. The biopsy specimen was diagnosed as a plasmacytoma (IgG, lambda-light chain type). Both serum myeloma-protein and urine Bence-Jones protein were negative. Bone marrow biopsy, a chest radiograph, total body skeletal survey and 67Ga- and 99mTc-scintigrams showed no other systemic lesions. These findings confirmed the diagnosis of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the nasal septum. The patient received irradiation of 40 Gy without clinically detectable reduction of tumour size. Teeth located in the nasal cavity are a rare phenomenon of uncertain cause. A case is presented of such an anomaly found in a patient with a repaired cleft lip and palate. A review of the literature with a discussion of the clinical features, diagnosis, treatment, and etiology is also included.

Inverted papilloma is an uncommon primary nasal tumor. Despite its benign nature, this tumor represents three typical characteristics: a high propensity of recurrence, local aggressiveness and association with malignancy. Inverted papilloma can reduce the patient's quality of life due to compromised nasal function, extension to the orbit and brain. The authors reported the unusual case of a 72-year-old male patient with inverted papilloma, which fatally extended to the intracranial temporal fossa after multiple recurrences. To the authors' knowledge, this is the twelfth case in the literature of inverted papilla extending into the temporal fossa. The current and pertinent literature in English, French and German was reviewed, and an algorithm for managing inverted papilloma was also proposed.

To evaluate the diagnostic value of intravoxel incoherent motion (IVIM) and diffusional kurtosis imaging (DKI) parameters in nasal or sinonasal squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) patients to determine local control/failure. Twenty-eight patients were evaluated. MR acquisition used single-shot spin-echo EPI with 12 b-values. Quantitative parameters (mean value, 25th, 50th and 75th percentiles) of IVIM (perfusion fraction f, pseudo-diffusion coefficient D*, and true-diffusion coefficient D), DKI (kurtosis value K, kurtosis corrected diffusion coefficient Dk) and apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) were calculated. Parameter values at both the pretreatment and early-treatment period, and the percentage change between these two periods were obtained. Extramedullary plasmacytoma is a rare plasma cell proliferative disorder with a predilection for the head and neck region. Occasionally, it presents as a solitary lesion in the nasal cavity. We report a case of an isolated lesion in the middle turbinate of the right nasal cavity. The lesion was completely excised via an endoscopic approach. We also review the pathology and management of plasmacytomas in general.

Introduction: Angioleiomyoma is a benign soft tissue tumor of smooth muscle origin with a vascular component and is an uncommon form of leiomyoma. Angioleiomyoma presenting in the nasal cavity is exceedingly rare and there are 68 reported cases in the literature worldwide. We present a case of angioleiomyoma of the nasal septum and review its diagnosis and treatment.
Study Design: Case report and Literature Review.
Methods: The medical records of a 69-year-old patient with an  angioleiomyoma of the nasal septum were reviewed. The PubMed database was searched for literature describing anglioleiomyoma of the nasal cavity using the key words “angioleiomyoma” with “nasal cavity,” “nasal septum,” “nose,” or “sinus.”
Results: A 69-year-old female patient presented with progressive right-sided nasal obstruction and epistaxis. Office examination revealed stigmata of recent bleeding and nasal endoscopy revealed a mass arising from the right nasal septum. Computerized tomography with intravenous contrast revealed a 1.3 x 1.1 cm heterogeneously enhancing vascular lesion arising from the right nasal septum. The patient was taken to the operating room for endoscopic resection.
Conclusion: Angioleiomyoma of the nasal septum is a rare and  challenging clinical diagnosis that requires detailed histopathologic
examination. Literature review suggests a female predilection with possible hormonal influence.

There are no evidence-based guidelines as to whether computed tomography (CT) or endoscopy should be selected as the first-line procedure when a nasal tumor is suspected in a dog or a cat and only one examination can be performed. Computed tomography and rhinoscopic features of 17 dogs and 5 cats with a histopathologically or cytologically confirmed nasal tumor were retrospectively reviewed. The level of suspicion for nasal neoplasia after CT and/or rhinoscopy was compared to the definitive diagnosis. Twelve animals underwent CT, 14 underwent rhinoscopy, and 4 both examinations. Of the 12 CT examinations performed, 11 (92%) resulted in the conclusion that a nasal tumor was the most likely diagnosis compared with 9/14 (64%) for rhinoscopies. Computed tomography appeared to be more reliable than rhinoscopy for detecting nasal tumors and should therefore be considered as the first-line procedure.

Malignant melanoma rarely develops in the mucous membranes. Statistical data indicate that rhinosinusal mucosal melanoma was reported in less than 1% of all melanic tumors and in 2-8% of all cancers developed in the nasal fossae and sinuses. Inverting papilloma of the nose and paranasal sinuses has been classified as a true neoplasm by most authors. It is distinct from the ordinary nasal polyps in that it has a different cause, different histologic features, a higher recurrence rate, and is occasionally associated with carcinoma. This study includes 57 patients seen over a 30-year period who had inverting papilloma and for whom the history, clinical and radiologic findings, treatment methods, pathologic sections, and recurrences were analyzed. Features associated with higher recurrence rate were epithelial atypia and extent of lesions. Females showed higher recurrence rates than males. External approaches (lateral rhinotomy) reduced recurrence remarkably compared with transnasal removal (13 percent versus 45 percent). Some reports indicate that topical nasal treatment with capsaicin, which is usually effective in reducing symptoms of vasomotor rhinitis, may also reduce symptoms in patients with nasal polyps. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of topical capsaicin treatment in severe sinonasal polyposis. Nine non-allergic, non-asthmatic patients with diffuse eosinophilic nasal polyposis were subjected to topical capsaicin treatment: for 3 consecutive days 0.5 ml 30 micromol/l capsaicin solution and on days 4 and 5 100 micromol/l capsaicin solution was sprayed into each nostril. Coronary computed tomography (CT) images were made shortly before treatment. Baseline nasal lavages and a questionnaire containing subjective symptoms and nasal endosocpy were taken just prior to the first application. Nasal lavages were performed prior to and after the last treatment and over 4 weeks, endoscopy and subjective scores at each weekly visit, and correspondent CT scans 4 weeks after the treatment. CT images were analysed by computer, calculating the nose sinuses air volume (NSAV) from the surface of aerated parts of nasal and sinus cavities for each slice per patient prior to and after treatment. Statistical analysis was performed comparing NSAV, subjective scores, endoscopy scores and eosinophil cationic protein (ECP) levels in nasal lavages prior to and after treatment. Topical treatment with capsaicin significantly increased NSAV and very significantly improved subjective and endoscopy scores, but did not significantly alter ECP levels in nasal lavages.
