Nursing Care Quality

Although patient satisfaction has been used traditionally as a measure of excellence, research has suggested that the perception of being well cared for is likely a more promising indicator of quality than satisfaction alone. Expectations, physical environment, communication, participation and involvement, technical competence, and the influence of healthcare organizations are factors that may impair patients' ability to distinguish nursing care from their overall healthcare experience. This study evaluated the effect of a nurse practitioner audit and feedback intervention on hospitalized patients' perception of care.

Background and Objective: Peer evaluation has been introduced as a control method and part of nursing quality assurance programs. Peer evaluation is the process by which nurses systematically review, control, and judge the quality of nursing care relative to occupational standards. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of peer evaluation on the quality of nursing reports of evaluated nurses in the surgical wards of Kamali Educational and Medical Center in 2019.
Methods: This study is a quasi-experimental interventional study before and after. The research tool is a standard checklist for examining the quality of nursing reports and the study population includes all nurses working in a surgery ward of Kamali Hospital in Karaj with at least two months of experience in this ward. To evaluate the effect of the intervention, the method of registering the evaluated nurses before and after the intervention is evaluated by the researcher.
Findings: In this study, 30 nurses (women) participated and 60 checklists were completed by the researcher to review the files registered by the evaluating nurses in surgery ward one, before and after the intervention, and a total of 180 files with standard checklists. The quality of registration in the Cardex and reporting was checked. The results showed that the status of compliance with the principles of reporting (Z = -4.838 Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed): <0.001) as well as the status of compliance with the principles of registration in Cardex and Pharmacy Card (Z = -4.253 Asymp. Sig. (2-tailed)) : <0.001) Improved.

Conclusion: Peer evaluation can be used as an effective training method along with other continuing staff training programs to improve the nursing registration and reporting process.

We are living in an exciting era in wiiich we have a much more extensive body of nursing research than in the past decades upon which to base nursing practice. Aithough there remain many aspects of patient care for which iittle research is available, our literature contains a wealth of knowledge applicable to practice. The purpose of this column in the Journal of Nursing Care Quality is to present practical information for direct-care nurses and quality improvement leaders about using the best available evidence to change practice. A multicomponent intervention was attempted in a pediatric emergency department to increase reporting of workplace aggression committed by patients and visitors. Overall reporting decreased from 53% to 47% (P = .06). Reasons for reporting were severity of incident and being asked to report. Reasons for not reporting were incidents being too minor and no action would be taken. Future change efforts need to consider multiple modes of communication to promote adoption of reporting and inclusion of administrators in efforts to improve reporting.

Using National Database of Nursing Quality Indicators data from July 2013 to June 2014, this correlational study examined the associations of injurious falls among all patient falls with multilevel factors in hospitals. The sample included all falls recorded in adult medical, surgical, combined medical-surgical, and step-down units (N = 2299) in participating hospitals (N = 488). Hierarchical negative binominal regression analyses were performed. Results revealed hospital and unit organizational factors associated with inpatient injurious falls.

The objective of this study was to assess the role of provider coordination on nurse manager and physician perceptions of care quality, while controlling for organizational factors. Findings indicated that nurse-nurse coordination was positively associated with nurse manager perceptions of care quality; neither physician-physician nor physician-nurse coordination was associated with physician perceptions. Organizational factors associated with positive perceptions of care quality included facility support of education for nurses and physicians, and the use of multidisciplinary rounding.
