Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder characterized by repetitive episodes of nocturnal breathing cessation due to upper airway collapse. This study aimed to analyze the prevalence and risk factors for OSA, in adult patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) in the Eastern province, Saudi Arabia. Methodology: This cross-sectional study was done online in the Eastern province of Saudi Arabia, where patients with SCD were enrolled to address OSA's risk and predictors using the stop bang questionnaire. Results: The study enrolled 208 patients with a median age of 29. Of the total number, 46.6% were identified as a low risk for OSA, whereas 11.5% and 41.3% were categorized as an intermediate and high-risk group, respectively. About 42% and 17% experienced three or more painful crises per year to be at high and intermediate risk of OSA, respectively, in comparison to 17.7% as a low-risk one (p value = 0.014). In regression analysis, the number of painful crises and hospitalization was not found to be a predictor for increased risk of OSA (p = 0.288, p = 0.881). Around 64.86% of male participants were found at high risk for OSA as compared to 14.5% in the female group (p value = 0.0001). A clear linear relationship was found between age and body mass index and increased risk of OSA, respectively. Conclusion: The significant proportion of adult patients with SCD are at higher risk of OSA with similar risk factors found in general populations. Therefore, early screening would result in early diagnosis and disease severity alteration.

OSAS has become a significant public health problem with the increasing demands of modern society. It is often associated with serious and adverse consequences as it is most of the time associated with comorbid conditions. Objectives of this paper are: To assess the impact of OSAS with and without comorbidities on Quality of life in either gender of different age. The sample of 205 patients diagnosed as having OSAS was divided into two groups depending on the presence and absence of comorbid conditions. OSAS patients with comorbidities were 179 and 26 patients were without comorbidities. The patients were administered with the specific evaluation scale SAQLI. In Group with Comorbidities-Quality of life (SAQLI) of patients was strongly affected by the degree of apnea severity and age. Gender comparison revealed more affection in females in domains daily functioning, Social interactions, and emotional function. In Group without Comorbidities-Quality of life (SAQLI) of patients was strongly affected by the degree of apnea severity however, no correlation was observed gender and age wise in patients without comorbidities. Conclusion of this paper is that the impact of OSAS in patients without comorbidities was significantly less than in patients with comorbidities.

Introduction: Many studies provided a positive relationship between Obstructive sleep apnea and diabetes mellitus type2. It has been revealed that almost one third of middle aged Saudi papulation are at risk for OSA. The aim of this study is to compare the risk of OSA between diabetic patients and non-diabetic middle aged Saudi population. Materials and Methods: This was a cross-sectional questionnaire-based study conducted in King Fahad hospital diabetes center in AL-Ahsaa, Saudi Arabia. Saudi patients aged 18 years and above with diabetes type 2 who visited the outpatient clinics in July and august 2015 where engaged in the study. Medical records were reviewed for demographic characteristics, weight, height, body mass index (BMI), blood pressure, glycated hemoglobin, and chronic medical conditions. Berlin questionnaire was used to assess the risk of OSA. Results: Based on berlin questionnaire, 45 out of 147 of sample (30.6%) are at high risk for OSA. 43.4% who have hypertension in high risk of OSA. Also, 33% of patients with BMI above or equal 25 are in high risk for OSA. There is no significant relation between age, gender and HA1C. Contrariwise, there is significant relation between presence of HTN and BMI above or equal 25 with increased risk for OSA. Conclusion: Hypertension, overweight and obesity contribute in high risk of OSA in diabetic patients. There is no difference between diabetic patients and middle aged Saudi population regarding the risk of OSA.
