Palladianism

Дом на Моховой улице в Москве, возведенный по проекту И.В. Жолтовского (1932–1934), явился одним из манифестов «сталинской» архитектуры; как и конкурсные проекты Дворца Советов, это ­здание продемонстрировало поворот к историзму и монументальности, синтез которых обнаруживался в традициях итальянского Ренессанса.
Восприятие дома как своего рода «реплики» палаццо XVI века, ставшее общим местом в литературе, восходит к первым отзывам коллег Жолтовского. Однако такими реминисценциями характеризуется только выразительный фасад здания, обращенный на Моховую. По другим же параметрам дом Жолтовского всецело принадлежал ХХ веку, продолжая и закрепляя линию неоклассики 1900–1910‑х годов.

Il s’agit d’un projet de thèse doctorale en cotutelle – entre la «Sapienza» Università de Roma et l’Université de Paris I «Panthéon- Sorbonne » – visant à étudier la vie et l’oeuvre architecturale de Jean-Nicolas Servandoni, une figure d’artiste parmi les plus emblématiques et moins connues du XVIIIe siècle. Peintre, architecte et décorateur, Servandoni est connu pour avoir remporté le concours pour le projet de la façade principale de l’église Saint-Sulpice de Paris, et pour le grand nombre des décors réalisés d’abord pour l’Opéra, puis pour la Salle des Machines des Tuileries. Au cours de sa vie il eut la chance de travailler auprès des souverains les plus importants d’Europe, de Paris à Londres, de Madrid à Lisbonne, de Bruxelles à Vienne et encore à Dresde et Stuttgart. Ce travail de recherche s’est fixé pour objectif d’étudier les périodes les moins connues de sa vie, comme sa formation d’abord à Florence puis à Rome, ses premières missions en Angleterre avant son arrivée à Paris en 1724, ses voyages à travers l’Europe, son travail pour les plus importantes familles royales européennes, et les autres commissions d’architecture en France, au-delà du chantier de Saint-Sulpice. La difficulté majeure a été d’identifier les principales sources bibliographiques et documentaires à partir desquelles on a établi des renseignements biographiques qui ont été transmis à travers le temps jusqu’à aujourd’hui. Il était donc nécessaire de réaliser une opération de «nettoyage» de tous les renseignements faux ou inexacts «incrustés» dans les siècles sur la vie de Servandoni. Grâce à ce «nettoyage», il a été possible d’identifier les sources «premières», sur lesquelles reconstruire la biographie de notre architecte. La recherche dans les archives de plusieurs pays a mené à d’importantes découvertes, tel que la présence de Servandoni à Rome entre 1719 et 1720. Ici il résidait dans le palais du Prince Guido Vaini, un homme «entièrement attaché à la France» et lié au milieu du théâtre d’Alibert et Capranica, où Servandoni aurait évidemment pu se former comme scénographe. Tout cela a permis de formuler des hypothèses sur ses contacts dans la capitale de la papauté, comme son lien avec l’atelier de Benedeto Luti dans le Palais de Florence, où travaillaient, parmi d’autres, Jean Paul Pannini et William Kent. Cette étude a donc mis en évidence sa relation étroite et continue avec les britanniques tout au long de sa vie – à commencer par son séjour romain – de sorte qu’on peut relire son oeuvre architecturale avec une nouvelle clé, davantage liée au milieu palladien anglais. En outre, la lecture des documents a permis d’identifier deux enjeux fondamentaux, qui expliquent en même temps la réussite et l’échec de sa carrière : la question de la nationalité de Servandoni et la légitimation de son rôle d’architecte. Servandoni, en effet, par sa naissance italienne – pourtant d’un père d’origine lyonnaise – dès son arrivée en France fut toujours apprécié comme peintre et décorateur «de Florence». Pour sa qualité d’«ultramontain», il fut choisi par le curé Languet de Gergy, comme architecte de la fabrique de Saint-Sulpice, véritable symbole et point de référence de l’Église de Rome à Paris, contre les «novateurs» jansénistes. Nell'opera di Andrea Palladio (1508-1580) le chiese costituiscono un corpus di architetture omogeneo e circoscritto, concentrato nella città di Venezia. La sua riconoscibilità è data dalle facciate, tutte dotate di uno schema compositivo simile, anche se non identico, e tale da risolvere «uno dei maggiori problemi dell'architettura cristiana» (Rudolf Wittkower). Il libro ripercorre la storia di queste facciate, ne individua la genesi compositiva, le variazioni, la fortuna critica a Venezia e nella cultura architettonica europea e anglosassone. Affronta il tema della loro conservazione e divulgazione in età moderna, nonché dei modi possibili di rappresentare ed esporre oggi l'architettura palladiana. I rilievi dei quattro prospetti, realizzati dal Sistema dei Laboratori dell'Università Iuav di Venezia e qui pubblicati, hanno fornito dati molto precisi, per la prima volta confrontabili fra loro. Essi colmano un vuoto negli studi storici e della conservazione, fornendo uno strumento di indagine inedito e raro. Non soltanto hanno permesso l'avvio di una nuova lettura delle facciate, ma aprono anche un più vasto orizzonte di riflessione sugli aspetti formali, compositivi e tecnico-costruttivi dell'architettura di Palladio.

Located off Corn Street in Bristol, the Exchange was opened to trade on 21 September 1743, in the reign of George II. The edifice was designed by the renowned Palladian architect John Wood the Elder of Bath for the Corporation of the City of Bristol, and has continually remained the property of the City to this day. Originally intended as a trading court for the international merchants of Bristol, the Exchange later became a trading place for corn and animal feed, a dominant commodity trade of the time. It consequently acquired the title of the ‘Corn Exchange’ in 1812, and remained for that purpose until trading ceased in 1988. Although such commodities are no longer traded, the edifice continues its principal service as a place of diverse trade in goods and food items that is integral to the general market of St. Nicholas. In the present-day, the Exchange is protected as a Grade I Listed building and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Palladian architecture in Bristol. This short essay presents a brief historical account of the significant reasons for this claim, and traces the influences that have shaped its design and evolution to its present state.

"The demolition of the Matarazzo mansion on Avenida Paulista is an example of a lack of awareness and coordination of cultural heritage preservation mechanisms, to a certain extent attributable to insufficient research on buildings of a great architectural worth. In a metropolis like São Paulo that is so rich in 20th century architectural  gestures and symbols, this question could appear to be of minor importance. Nevertheless, and despite the everyday loss of architectural objects of great cultural value, it is important to gain better familiarity with them in order to avoid the complete disappearance of their memory after their physical destruction. This article discusses the design process of the mansion renovation between 1938 and 1940, which gave us the image of the building that lasted until its demolition. The study puts this architectural work into context and removes any doubt about Tomaso Buzzi’s authorship of this project. Buzzi is an architect who has only recently become the focus of intense study in Italy and hopefully will be better known in Brazil."

Статья посвящена исследованию творческого метода архитектора И.В. Жолтовского (1867–1959), снискавшего славу главного советского палладианца. В имеющейся литературе о Жолтовском неоправданно мало места уделяется дореволюционному периоду творчества архитектора, поскольку наиболее масштабные произведения были созданы им уже в советское время. Говоря о курьёзности такой фокусировки внимания исследователей, мы подразумеваем, что именно в период профессионального становления архитектора складывается его творческое кредо. Тем более верно это в отношении Жолтовского, который на протяжении своей долгой жизни оставался верен принципам, усвоенным в начале карьеры. Начиная с самых ранних работ 1900–1910-х гг., этот мастер совершенно особенным образом использовал
наследие А. Палладио. Это были не столько попытки проектировать «в стиле Палладио», сколько опыты по исследованию конкретных построек выдающегося зодчего Ренессанса; результаты этой исследовательской работы претворялись в проектах Жолтовского, наполненных прямыми цитатами знаменитых вилл и палаццо. Такая буквальность воспроизведения мотивов Палладио позволяет говорить о радикализме позиции Жолтовского, выделяющей его на
общем фоне русских неоклассиков начала ХХ в. Представляется возможным
ввести для описания творческого метода Жолтовского термина «радикальное
палладианство», что позволит дифференцировать его относительно исторического палладианства XVII–XIX вв.

This publication deals with the metamorphoses of the Brisbane Victoria Bridge. It includes an Appendix Palladiana where the ideological "matrix" of the Palladian Manifesto Villa "La Rotunda" is said to be the "Tetraktys" (the upper numbers/part of the Pythagorean Lambda). Furthermore the root two rectangle, Serlio's "proportione diagonea", is also said to be at the basis of the Villa's proportionality patterns (see Appendix Palladiana - with figures - Palladian proportionality patterns), "along all axes" (Morgan, 1960), making the masterpiece "triaxially symmetrical", with a section a la "doron" (see Vitruvius and March, 1998), which, according to the author, has given origin to the famous name of the Golden Section (in Italian: Sezione D'Oro - originally allegedly called a "Sezione 'Doron' ").

The Englishness in I.V. Zholtovsky's architecture: Horseracing society house

I.V. Zholtovsky’s name as well as his architecture are imagined
as fully associated with Italian influences. Meanwhile, by the beginning of the 20th century, Italy was by no means the most significant country of palladianism: this stylistic movement had been developed much more in England, in addition the first monograph on Palladio was published in London (1902).
Having studied the biographical documents of Zholtovsky, one can conclude that the “English theme” in his life was no less significant than the “Italian”. Moreover, this relation was not limited to the sphere of political or cultural preferences, but strongly affected the architect professional activities. By the example of Zholtovsky’s first independent work, the Horseracing Society house in Moscow, one can trace how the creative credo of Zholtovsky-neoclassicism was formed; how from imitation of the British Victorian style, through the study of English architectural books, he came to his own version of neoclassic style (that was so far from the patriotic-nostalgic features of the pre-revolutionary decades of Russian architecture).
