Respiratory distress syndrome is a common health problem in preterm due to immaturity of lungs with deficiency of surfactant. Surfactant reduces surface tension in the alveoli, thereby preventing collapse of the lungs during expiration. Bubble continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a low cost intervention that provides continuous distending pressure to the alveoli so that they will not collapse during expiration.

X-shaped macular dystrophy with flavimaculatus flecks is individualized of other heredo-macular dystrophies. This aspect was showed in two families with a retina1 pigment epithelial dystrophy characterized by an X-shaped yellowish macular lesion and numerous flavimaculatus retinal flecks. Nine members were variously affected. The condition was bilateral, had a dominant inheritance, and started in middle age with a slow-developing macular lesion. Visual functions were often minimally disturbed for two or three decades. Relations with others heredo-macular dystrophy are discussed particularly with pattern dystrophy.

Out of the 254 premature neonates, eligible neonates were 68, who required respiratory support. CPAP alone was required, 19 neonates (70.3%) babies in very preterm category as compared to 5 (45%) & 16(53.3%) neonates in extremely preterm moderate to late preterm category respectively.-. Mechanical ventilation (SIMV –PS) alone) was required in 18% of extreme preterm neonates, 7.4% of very preterm & 16% of moderate preterm neonates. CPAP failure was maximum in extreme preterm group (36.3%). Respiratory distress syndrome was the foremost cause of respiratory distress requiring respiratory support in preterm neonates 75% followed by TTN & MAS.

Two families showed a retinal pigment epithelial dystrophy characterized by an X-shaped yellowish macular lesion and numerous flavimaculatus retinal flecks. Nine members were variously affected. The condition was bilateral, had a dominant inheritance and started in middle age with a slow-developing macular lesion. Visual functions were often minimally disturbed for 2 or 3 decades. The flavimaculatus flecks which differed in number appeared only as secondary phenomena yet increased in number and size. At the onset of the disease, the ERG and EOG as well as colour vision were normal and became altered only in the course of a very slow process.
