Pedro de Torres Rámila, profesor de la Universidad de Alcalá, publicó en 1617 la Spongia, durísimo libelo en latín contra la vida privada y las obras de Lope de Vega, el escritor más famoso de la época. No se conserva ningún ejemplar de esa Spongia pero sí de la Expostulatio Spongiae, la respuesta, también en latín, publicada en defensa de Lope en 1618: una obra excepcional en el contexto de la historia literaria de los Siglos de Oro, innovadora en su diseño editorial y provocadora en su estilo literario. A pesar de su importancia, el contenido del texto apenas es conocido entre los estudiosos y ha planteado un sinfín de interrogantes. El estudio sobre la Expostulatio Spongiae que se presenta ahora, resultado de varios años de paciente y concienzuda labor de investigación, resuelve casi todos los enigmas que plantea el texto, empezando por el de la identidad del autor, y ofrece una rigurosa edición del texto latino acompañada de una magistral traducción al castellano, todo a cargo de Pedro Conde y Xavier Tubau.

In 1617, Pedro de Torres, a professor at the University of Alcalá, published Spongia, a harsh Latin satire on the private life and works of Lope de Vega, the most famous writer of the time. No copies of that Spongia have survived, although we do have the response to it, a defense of Lope, also in Latin, the Expostulatio Spongiae, published in 1618. This is an exceptional work in the context of Golden Age literary history, with an innovative editorial design and provocative literary style. Despite its importance, the content of the text is barely known among scholars and has posed countless unanswered questions. The study of the Expostulatio Spongiae presented here, the result of several years of steady painstaking research, resolves almost all the mysteries surrounding the text, beginning with the identity of the author, and offers a rigorous Latin text edition accompanied by an excellent translation into Spanish, all carried out by Pedro Conde and Xavier Tubau.
