This document provides short excerpts from the Portland's Goose Hollow book. One of Portland’s oldest neighborhoods, Goose Hollow is steps from downtown and beloved for its quirky character, historic homes, spectacular views, and walkability. The “hollow” was carved out by the meandering Tanner Creek. This deep gulch was filled with Chinese vegetable gardens and had trestle bridge crossings. Tanner Creek was diverted underground and infilled from the 1870s to the turn of the century. Yet, the creek’s presence is still felt in the ravine carved through the Tualatin Mountains (spanned by the Vista Bridge) and in the neighborhood’s identity. This book provides definitive answers to how Goose Hollow got its name and how Tanner Creek Gulch was filled. Stories are also told of the Great Plank Road, City Park’s slow-moving landslide, and famous residents such as Daniel Lownsdale, C. E. S. Wood, Dr. Marie Equi, John Reed, and Mayor Bud Clark. Historic institutions such as Civic Stadium, Multnomah Athletic Club, Lincoln High School, and Washington Park are also featured.



Tracy J. Prince, Ph.D., a professor at Portland State University, lives in Goose Hollow. By interviewing numerous Portland families and conducting archival research at the Oregonian, City of Portland, and the Oregon Historical Society, Prince uncovered the little-known history of this charming neighborhood. The foreword is written by legendary character, former mayor, and Goose Hollow resident Bud Clark.

BA Honors Thesis, 2013: In the years immediately following World War II, the United States became utterly fascinated by sex and sexuality. In Portland, Oregon, a veteran police sergeant, Earl Biggs, release two books as guides both protecting children from sex criminals and to understanding the range of human sexuality and the potential dangers deviant sexuality posed. In an era where homosexuality and sexual predation were linked in the eyes of the law and the general public, a local moral panic over the safety of children and growing attention to gay and lesbian existence emerged. Examining both of Biggs's published works and local newspapers and politics, this thesis sought to examine the ties between postwar development, national anxiety over Communism, and moral panic over sexuality as they intersected in Portland from 1945-1955.

This paper quantitatively measures the relationship between retail change and residential gentrification by examining the connection between gentrification and the opening of craft breweries in Portland, Oregon. Our findings indicate that: 1) craft breweries were slightly more likely to open in gentrified/gentrifying neighborhoods than not and, 2) with the exception of the 1990s, breweries in gentrifying neighborhoods most often opened followed the onset of neighbourhood upgrading. During the 1990s, we find that breweries were at the leading edge of gentrification, representing the type of economic and cultural changes in the commercial landscape that make a neighbourhood attractive to middle-class gentrifiers. Breweries opening during the 1980s, 2000s, and 2010-2015 periods were more likely to follow gentrification or to open in stable or upgrading neighbourhoods.  Considering these results, we caution that while craft breweries may retain local industrial jobs and revitalize commercial districts, they may also solidify on-going patterns of gentrification.

For nearly four-hundred years, blacks in North America have survived under conditions of oppression or in environments where they are required to assimilate into communities that have historically served the predominantly white privileged culture. This thesis examined the results of black needs to assimilate into the predominantly and historically powerful white American culture that often believes it understands what best serves the needs of blacks, without having ever been subject itself to historically evolved black survival culture and values. Unfortunately for blacks, over the centuries the black socio-economic development emulates more of a survival culture and identity that is unequal to white privileged culture and identity. Blacks have neither the economic nor the political power in North America to accumulate the wealth or socio-economic status of the privileged white Americans, and remain disadvantaged unless they can redeem black identity through assimilation. The unique black survival culture has its own communication styles and interpersonal relation values. For blacks to exist comfortably in predominantly white communities, their communication styles and interpersonal relational styles may be exhibited briefly, but ultimately blacks must assimilate into white culture to obtain acceptance. Although diversity and inclusion have both emerged as popular concepts for white Americans, they address only the inclusive behaviors and diversity for the physical and legal identity of blacks. The evolutionary black survival strategies of unique interpersonal and communication styles remain inappropriate for integration into white culture; consequently, black identity and culture will only be tolerated by whites for a second and exhibited by blacks for a mere second more.

A growing body of critical literature seeks to identify conceptual and practical problems accompanying the realisation of mainstream ‘eco-city’ initiatives around the world. However, little attention has been paid to the status of the ‘city’ itself within the broader discourse. If eco-cities are to be more than experimental ‘technological showcases’, and aim to transform urban life more generally, the question of what types of ‘cityness’ will ensue is of considerable importance. To effect a more significant sustainability transition, eco-city plans and policies may need somehow to encompass a more nuanced conceptualisation of cities as complex, unpredictable, and emergent spaces. The incompatibility of such a conceptualisation with liberal-modernist modes of planning means that radically innovative new approaches to eco-city development may need to be found.

This thesis considers whether the eco-city, theorised as a multiple process of real-world experimentation, may shed some light on how ‘cityness’ might better be planned for in future. To do so, it conceptualises cityness through the lens of ‘publicness’. It makes an original contribution to knowledge by developing a new theoretical model of publicness as an ‘assemblage’ of space and behaviour, with an ‘emergent’ and ‘civic’ modality. It thereby extends recent debates over the idea of ‘urban assemblage’, and makes innovative links between theories of planning and of the public. This model informs the analysis of original empirical research, investigating the conceptualisation of the public in an international sample of official eco-city documents, and exploring the publicness of two implemented initiatives, in Portland, Oregon (US) and newly built Sejong City (South Korea).

The research finds that publicness tends to be poorly articulated in mainstream eco-city plans and policies, with potentially negative implications for sustainability in the ‘urban age’. However, it also argues that state institution-led planning – even when experimental ‘governance’ approaches are adopted – may inevitably be limited in its ability to encompass the emergent public life of the city. The thesis concludes by considering the prospects for overcoming or more productively acknowledging these limits in future.

While Portland’s Urban Growth Boundary (UGB) has proven to be extremely successful in its initial goal of preserving agricultural land, recent State Measures and expansion attempts have challenged its ability to control development and continue operation using the policy- based methodology it has for the past 40 years.

Projections of population growth will continue to indicate a need for the region to exhibit increased flexibility in its policies to include landscape design. A new development strategy integrating rural and urban land uses has the potential to address multiple regional interests, rebuild consensus and encourage new landscape relationships.

What if Urban Growth Boundary expansions were made based on the preservation of neighborhood character in addition to the preservation of soil and natural resources? This project proposes a strategy for choreographing an integrated landscape network facilitating gradations of land use, preservation, development and ecology. Preservation is no longer a black or white condition, instead adaptive to site specific social and geographic circumstances.

The study emerges from an analysis of existing dynamics in three proposed UGB Expansion Zones. It is based on on-site data collection and observations, conversations with local professionals and residents, geo-spatial data and a variety of academic and local media sources.

This is the PhD dissertation of Dr Calzada, presented in February 2011 and published by the Basque regional government in November 2011. The PhD aimed at conceptually framing and analytical model of the Basque city-region by comparing it with Dublin (Ireland) and Portland (Oregon). The perspective addresses social innovation processes, which leads us to consider four interdependent systems: URBS, CYBER, CIVITAS, and POLIS. As the outcome of the model, the author develops DEMOS system.

Abstract: These two history scholars of the early 20th century were at odds with each other and to the California riddle of where Francis Drake spent 5 weeks to repair the Golden Hinde in the summer of 1579.  Both men were honored in their professions and respected internationally.  Henry Wagner correctly exposed George Davidson’s Drake theories to be off-base.  Although Wagner presented a concise case to disprove Davidson’s theories, the evidence Wagner offered for Drake’s anchorage eventually also proved to be flawed.  New research indicates that Drake never set foot in any California bay. www.FortNehalem.net

The story of Portland, Oregon, like much of history, has usually been told with a focus on male leaders. This book offers a reframing of Portland’s history--starting from 10,000 years of Native American women, to pioneer women, to women of the Progressive Era, WWI, WWII, post-war women, and chapters on Women in the Arts and Women in Politics. Many women made their mark and radically changed the Oregon frontier, including Native Americans Polly Johnson and Josette Nouette; pioneers Minerva Carter and Charlotte Terwilliger; doctors Marie Equi, Mary Priscilla Avery Sawtelle, and Bethina Owens-Adair; artists Eliza Barchus and Lily E. White; suffragists Abigail Scott Duniway, Hattie Redmond, and Eva Emery Dye; lawyer Mary Gysin Leonard; Air Force pilot Hazel Ying Lee; politicians Barbara Roberts and Margaret Carter; and authors Frances Fuller Victor, Beverly Cleary, Beatrice Morrow Cannady, Ursula Le Guin, and Jean Auel. These women, along with groups of women such as “Wendy the Welders,” made Portland what it is today.

Notable Women of Portland is a bestselling book for The History Press/Arcadia that is widely used in many Portland classrooms. The book includes diverse stories from many walks of life, including: Native American stories, brilliant women writers whose careers were mostly ghost writing for male authors, women who had to argue to be allowed to be doctors and lawyers, women who fought for labor laws and civil rights laws, blue-collar workers in WWII shipyards, and many other inspiring stories.

Research in this book that is not covered in other Portland history books:
*a more complex history of Native American women in early Portland than any other historian has covered (including the pervasive use of Chinook Jargon) which Dr. Prince's decades of research revealed.
*Black pioneer Sydna Francis is almost always referred to in Oregon histories with the incorrect name Lynda. This book includes 3 census records, so that Oregon has the correct name for this pioneer woman who wrote for Frederick Douglass’s newspaper and was prominent in NY abolitionist activism before moving to Portland in 1851. Oregon histories also refer to her brother-in-law by the incorrect name of O.B. Francis. This book includes an 1852 Oregonian ad from his store to prove that his name was I.B. Francis.
*Dr. Prince found the photos of Native American women that were sent by the Sacajawea Statue Association to sculptor Alice Cooper as models for the statue. They meant well, but these photos were of Paiute women in the desert near the Grand Canyon, while Sacajawea was Shoshone from what is now Idaho.
*first time in print for the beautiful murals of WPA artist Martina Gangle Curl that are hung too high in the Madison High School auditorium to be clearly seen.

I filed and served the above document today on landlord's attorney, one Jeff S. Bennett, Esq. who served the subject Motion to Dismiss (MTD) on me yesterday afternoon by email. The more he lags, the faster I get. In it you will find a summary of current Oregon law addressing common landlord-tenant issues as they apply to MOBILE HOME OWNERS on someone else's land, in this case the land is owned by a corporation and that corporation employs various minions each of whom does some compartmentalized task. All is well until there is a breach, then it becomes and adventure "through the looking glass" to get any human being to communicate in a meaningful way with this legally deaf tenant. The dialogue between is colorful and informative as this is not a typical eviction suit, in fact there is no eviction or defect to be corrected at this point, I only seek to prevent future harm. Defendant seeks attorneys' fees, of course!

As worries over the environmental impact of the industrial food system grow the idea of locally produced food is becoming increasingly popular. This includes a growing interest in the “ultimate zero carbon food” produced through urban growing. However, there are several barriers to an expansion of urban agriculture in North America; these include poor urban soils, a lack of knowledge, zoning restrictions, and personal time constraints that prohibit the investment needed to tend a small-plot intensive garden. This paper discusses two case studies (one in Portland, Oregon and the other in Vancouver, British Columbia) of assisted urban small-plot intensive farming. These initiatives involve entrepreneurs installing and tending small plots on participants’ land. The crops produced are either sold at local farmers’ markets or shared directly with the land owners. These efforts provide benefit in their own right but could also help speed the diffusion of urban agriculture; as examples of early “niche adaptation” both projects have strong educational components and are engaging a diverse demographic. In addition this approach with one urban farmer tending multiple plots could help address concerns over small plot carbon footprints that have been raised in the literature.

A brief sociological overview of Portland, Seattle, and Vancouver to put these cities in context for the 2016 American Sociological Association annual meetings, taking place this year in the Pacific Northwest for the first time in almost 60 years, and for only the 2nd time in the 110-year history of the organization.

Portland, Oregon is a city in the Pacific Northwest of the
United States and Portlandia is a television show produced by the
Independent Film Company (IFC); both mythologize place. Portland is lauded by popular media as well as planning and design professionals as a model city. Portlandia satirizes this celebrated model urbanism orchestrated by artisanal values and hipster ethics. This essay examines how both Portland the city and Portlandia the show between them fabricate a model for twenty-first-century urbanism.

The primary topic of this terminal project is the proposed rehabilitation of Portland Union Station by Prosper Portland, the economic and urban development agency for the city and owner of Union Station since 1987. Prosper Portland, in consultation with IBI Group and working with other stakeholders including the Oregon Department of Transportation, is proposing to modernize Union Station to meet current code standards, support increasing passenger rail demands, improve the station’s economic vitality, and reintegrate the station into the community through the introduction of new retail spaces. The project is currently at the 30 percent preliminary design phase. This research utilizes four recent station rehabilitation projects as case studies: Seattle’s King Street Station, Sacramento Valley Station, St. Paul Union Depot, and Denver Union Station. These case studies question the best practices for adaptively reusing underutilized spaces within terminals while maintaining authenticity. The overarching goal of this analysis is to supply Prosper Portland and IBI Group with recommendations and a transparent model of how to maximize Union Station’s potential not only as a transportation facility, but a revived activity center for the surrounding Portland community.

Defendant Ryan who signed a subjectively defamatory letter and allegedly circulated it without checking facts, cannot now testify that any part of it is true. He was hand served by the local sheriff on August 14th. No substantive response was filed until September 23rd, more than 30 days from the date Ryan was served.  Ryan is a licensed realtor, and the regional manager of Commonwealth Real Estate Services, in Portland, Oregon. Ryan is represented by attorney JSB, who acknowledged receipt of my complaint on September 3, 2015, not once but five times in writing and confirmed by recorded text relay call that the original date of receipt is the THIRD.

How's this for a soap? A woman gives up a high-powered career in advertising, falls victim to multiple sclerosis, and springs back by expressing her anger and desire to live in clay dinnerware, furniture, and, for want of a better word, "objects."
This is not a new soap opera. Like many people faced with a life-threatening crisis, Debra Norby searched for a diversion and found it in art.
Art critic, Juan Carlos Flores Zuñiga, wrote for NW Art Gallery Magazine a portrait of the Norby and her ingenuity and powerful statement about art and design at the crossroads. The article was published for issue of january 1990 in Portland, Oregon.

This research highlights the impact that rising rent prices have on refugees' sense of place in Portland. The majority of Oregon’s refugee population arrive in Portland, the fourth fastest gentrifying city in the United States. Refugees receive eight months of financial assistance upon arrival, an average of $339 per month. Employees from the Immigrant Refugee Community Organization were interviewed including refugees, an asylee, and immigrants from Bhutan, Myanmar/Burma, Chad, Iraq, and Somalia. One employee from Catholic Charities was interviewed. Positive perceptions include natural amenities, that it is considered safe and small, the progressive political climate, and community presence & support. They all said they would stay as long as they could afford to, indicating they had developed an attachment to place. Negative themes found include gentrification, racism, and displacement. Many of the refugees moved to rural areas that are conservative, leaving them isolated from their communities, distanced from resources and potentially more likely to experience racism against under the current conservative anti-immigration administration. Policy considerations generated by interviewees and organizations that are currently working to address these issues were discussed. Further work should be done to determine how refugees can be supported. The recommendations resulting from this study are increased resources towards refugee housing stability and affordability at the municipal, regional and federal level.

our ideals, actions and environments at a given time in
the past. Some of Portland’s Heritage Trees predate
the founding of Portland, representing millennia of land
use by Indigenous peoples. Others are relatively new
plantings that represent unique species and cultivars
from around the globe. Some were planted as memorials
for prominent individuals, others by everyday citizens as
personal investments, and still others were planted for
now unknown reasons. In every case Heritage Trees have
a connection to history.

EcoDistricts is a bold visioning and investment strategy to manage growth and development in major rede- velopment areas and existing neighborhoods. “The objective of the program is to test, accelerate and eventually codify the next generation of best practices in green development and civic infrastructure that can be scaled to create neigh- borhoods with the lowest environmental impact and highest economic and social resiliency in the U.S.
“An EcoDistrict is a neighborhood that generates all its energy from on-site renewables, collects and recycles rain- water and waste, and prioritizes pedestrian, bike, and transit access. It combines mixed use, mixed income development; neighborhood scale parks, schools, community centers; and services, and enhanced IT infrastructure...” (Bennett, 2009)
This definition builds the framework for a compre- hensive strategy to build communities with the lowest pos- sible environmental impact and highest long-term economic and community returns. We have chosen Rob Bennett’s model of an ecologically sustainable district as a point of de- parture for our studies for two primary reasons:
1) His definition provides conceptual modalities that, though explicitly actionable, are broad enough in scope to be adapted to diverse urban and suburban morphologies without prejudicing one in favor over another.
2) His goals provide for a balanced approach, utilizing ecological, economic, and social solutions for sustain- ability instead of simply focusing on one. Also, since the intention of the EcoDistricts project is the eventual execution and codification of some of these solutions in Oregon, we are uniquely prepared by being ac- quainted with the cultural and social norms that must be reconciled for this framework to actually produce a sustainable community people will actually desire to
live within.
We believe this blend of ecological, economic and social sustainability to be imperative in the creation and suc- cess of healthy and responsible districts in urban and subur- ban areas. Through the identification and extraction of pat- terns from related case studies and literature we are creating a library of strategies (many of them interrelated) that can be applied to a new or existing district to increase its sustainable attributes.
Our goal is to establish a set of qualitative goals via a pattern-based approach in order to yield EcoDistricts that are ecologically, economically, and socially whole.

There are some places where the development equation is relatively simple: land plus demand leads to development. There are also places where a complex web of pressures and perceptions obfuscate this simple arithmetic. Portland’s Old Town/Chinatown district is just such a place. In fact, despite popular consensus of the manifold advantages inherent in this historic jewel at the heart of Portland, it has remained largely stagnant for over half a century.
This study will seek to lift the fog of perception and conjecture that has fallen over the public discourse surround- ing this neighborhood. Through analysis of demographic data and interviews with those vested with an interest in the district, I will attempt to extrapolate the various incentives, both positive and negative, that steer development. Many of these incentives are relatively common patterns in land development. Others are singularly unique to Old Town/ Chinatown. These incentives, regarded here as pressure pat- terns, will be analyzed for their validity as well as their phenotypical expression in the public discourse.

This book describes the story of three building projects connected with financier Henry Villard in Portland, Oregon: the unbuilt Grand Central Passenger Station, the now-lost Portland Hotel, (both designed by McKim, Mead & White) and the extant Portland Union Station (Henry Van Brunt). Each structure is interesting in its own right, but collectively they also serve as a lens for exploring the rapid, 20-30 year transition of Portland from a colonial-style outpost to a fully formed modern metropolis.

Dr. Tracy Prince explains how her research, using Oregon's incredible resource of digitized historic newspapers, helped her uncover long-forgotten histories of Native American, Chinese-American, African-American, women, and pioneer residents of Portland, Oregon.

Questions Presented on Appeal:

a. Did the trial court err in ruling that as a matter of law defendant did not have a duty to prevent the filing and maintenance for 10 (ten) years of a completely false MHRT report?

b. Did the trial court err in ruling that as a matter of law defendant did not have a duty to prevent foreseeable future damages to deaf taxpayers in Washington County caused by Sheriff's deputies on account of the absence of any official deaf communication policy?

Portland, Oregon is a city renowned for its countercultural taking preference of cottage industry over multi-nationals, despite living in the shadow of Nike, Intel and Adidas. In terms of the music industries the city is pinpointed by a handful of independent labels and the various self-releasing internet platforms available. Music-making is also supported by strong network of non-for-profit organisations providing opportunities to play, funding for exploratory projects and start-up capital for independent music industries such as record labels and studios.
Through ethnographic enquiry this paper explores the term ‘taste-maker’, a term commonly used by Portlanders in relation to who guides social music choices. This term has been used to justify the existence of record labels, such as SoHiTek Records and Tender Loving Empire, in a city that has adopted digital self-distribution techniques. Non-for-profits, for example PDX Pop Now!, also fulfil this role giving a sense of taste authority to the all-ages community.
Using current literature on music in post-industrial cities (Webb 2011; Wergin & Holt, 2011), this paper seeks to position taste-making as part of the musical social fabric of post-industrial, gentrified, Portland. It also seeks to address the social collectivism taste-making offers and thus the dynamism it sparks.

Portland is fortunate to have retained a disproportionately high percentage of operating historic movie theaters, the largest number per capita of any city over 500,000 in the country. It is the purpose of this paper to speculate why. The pertinent questions are thus as follows: (1) Is Portland legitimately rife with historic theaters?; and (2) If so, what policies or other factors have contributed to their high survival rate? This study finds that Portland does have more operating historic theaters per capita than other cities and speculates that the cause may be a complex combination of preservation efforts, arts policies, and significant cultural forces. The primary topic of this terminal project is the proposed rehabilitation of Portland Union Station by Prosper Portland, the economic and urban development agency for the city and owner of Union Station since 1987. Prosper Portland, in consultation with IBI Group and working with other stakeholders including the Oregon Department of Transportation, is proposing to modernize Union Station to meet current code standards, support increasing passenger rail demands, improve the station’s economic vitality, and reintegrate the station into the community through the introduction of new retail spaces. The project is currently at the 30 percent preliminary design phase. This research utilizes four recent station rehabilitation projects as case studies: Seattle’s King Street Station, Sacramento Valley Station, St. Paul Union Depot, and Denver Union Station. These case studies question the best practices for adaptively reusing underutilized spaces within terminals while maintaining authenticity. The overarching goal of this analysis is to supply Prosper Portland and IBI Group with recommendations and a transparent model of how to maximize Union Station’s potential not only as a transportation facility, but a revived activity center for the surrounding Portland community.

This past May when I checked in for my flight home from a research trip in Bridgetown, I was caught off guard by a Barbadian crew member's eagerness for my hometown. "Portland?  Portland, Oregon??  I LOVE Grimm."  Yet long before the Pacific Northwest was the official haunt of Grimms, Wesen, eternally youthful vampires, and their business-world BDSM equivalents, it was the birthplace of new religious movements and religious innovation.  While certainly endless rain and overcast days have a magical appeal for those who tend to sparkle like diamonds in the unwelcome sunshine, the Gothic weather patterns of the Pacific Northwest also seem to induce a certain spiritual ecstasy for what might lie beyond the mists of the visible world.  This makes it a fantastic place to study the local inhabitants' visions of death and the great beyond.  In this post I consider Pacific Northwest innovations in Russian Burial traditions and the impact of the Russians on Portland funerary art.

Chinook Jargon/Chinuk Wawa History: Most people are unaware of the pervasive use of Chinook Jargon in Portland, Oregon’s first century and unaware of Portland’s profound Native-American history. Tillicum is a Chinook Jargon (called Chinuk Wawa by Native people) word that means “the people,” “friends” and also refers to ancestors (“ahnkuttie tillicums”). It is also spelled as Tilikum. It is important to honor Portland's Native-American history in naming “the people’s bridge” a Native American name with historical significance.

(This op-ed was written to try to persuade the TriMet Naming Committee to choose the Tillicum/ Tilikum name for their new bridge--a bridge designed for pedestrians, bicyclists, streetcars, light rail trains, and buses, but not cars. This op-ed and the advocacy of many people, including the Grand Ronde Tribe, helped sway the committee, who chose the name "Tilikum Crossing, Bridge of the People.")

Complaint that asks the Department of Justice to instruct local Sheriff to read door sign that states occupant is hyperacute/deaf and needs language accommodation under the ADA, asks for no knocking and provides email. 

Errata: Deputy Tim Maleski was the "sheriff." The date of the event was in fact June 30, 2015 according to his report, which I received read and scanned. A copy of the false police report went to the Department of Justice, ADA enforcement division in Washington DC as I often send them examples of blatant discrimination.

If they choose not to take the case I will refile this as a federal discrimination case, SOL expires October 2017.

The anarchist project, as it has been developed over the centuries, has been to expand human freedom and reduce misery, toil and coercion throughout society.  As political thought has developed since the 18th century, anarchism has sought to expand this sphere of the included subject to advocate for women, people of color, the working class, and nearly from its inception, non-human animals.  In the modern arena, anarchism and anarchist direct action movements have struck back at capital and the State with the aim of reducing animal exploitation, financially paralyzing abusers, and raising radical awareness.  This chapter seeks to explore the myriad of ways in which the anarchist revival of direct action, which followed the 1999 anti-WTO demonstrations in Seattle, have engaged with this fight.  Through an examination of contemporary anarchist tendencies including the Greek insurrectionists, the international militants of the Informal Anarchist Federation, the Mexican eco-anarchist bomb tossers, the US Queer network Bash Back! and others, we will examine the inseparable link between those that oppose State power and those that seek to strike back against speciesism, ecocide and domestication.  Drawing primarily from movement communiqués, the chapter explores a discourse on the inherent linkages between the anarchist struggle, and that of animal liberation as told through the words of a clandestine, globally-dispersed network of attackers.

Cascadia is the proposed name for a bioregional political entity and/or an independent nation located within the Cascadian bioregion of the Pacific Northwest and part of the Alaskan panhandle in the United States and British Columbia in Canada.  Proposed boundaries differ, with some drawn along existing state and provincial lines, and others drawn along larger ecological, cultural, and economic boundaries.  For many years, individuals and groups have written and philosophized about such a place. This course will initiate many of the discussions that would surround its establishment and explore questions relevant to this engagement.  What does “nation-state” mean in the age of economic globalization? How would a regional government possibly change the local and global sociopolitical landscape? Via discussions, readings, community engagement, and cultural production, we will examine and create visions of Cascadia.
