APSTRAKT
Američka umetnica Sindi Šerman je 1989-1990. godine snimila 35 fotografija velikih formata, pod nazivom "Istorijski portreti", inspirisanih evropskim slikarstvom od 15. do 19. veka. Najprepoznatljiviji izvori na koje se ova umetnica oslonila jesu Rafaelova "Fornarina" (c. 1518) i Karavađov "Bolesni Bahus" (c. 1594). Pri tome ona, u sebi svojstvenom maniru, tumači portret jedne renesansne kurtizane i alegorijski autoportret jednog umetnika pozajmljujući im svoj lik i zauzimajući njihove formalne stavove, te poigravajući se kulturnim, odn. rodno definisanim, prostorom njihovog originalnog tumačenja. Da bi to učinila, umetnica jasno odbacuje tradicionalni dekorum. Sindi Šerman se, kako se može zaključiti iz formalnih karakteristika ovih inscenacija, (auto)portreta, s jedne strane poigrala muškim pogledom, renesansnom predstavom jedne idealizovane nage ženske figure i njenim očiglednim svođenjem na neobarokni naturalizam. Na ovaj način je uvela pet vekova staru prostornu i vremensku dimenziju koja stoji između originala i njegovih interpretacija, kao jasan feministički komentar o duboko patrijarhalnoj kulturi koja je aktuelna i danas. S druge strane, Šermanova se poigrala Karavađovom predstavom antičkog boga Baha koji je, prema poznoj manirističkoj teoriji o čovekovim temperamentima bio odgovoran za stvaralački nagon umetnika-tradicionalno muškarca. Dajući Bahu svoj lik koji je na ovoj fotografiji rodno neodređen, kako bi smo želeli da istaknemo u jednoj komparativnoj analizi originala i interpretacije ove umetnice, ona, kao žena, prisvaja predstavu kreativnosti, odn. samu kreativnost, kao svojstvo umetnika uopšte, bez obzira na rodnu pripadnost.

Spaces of Gender and Decorum. Cindy Sherman's Interpretations of Raphael's "Fornarina" and Caravaggio's "Sick Bacchus"
American artist Cindy Sherman produced a series of large color photographs in 1989-1990, titled "Historical Portraits", inspired by European portrait paintings from the 15th to the 19th centuries. The most recognizable sources used by the artist are Raphael's "Fornarina" (c. 1518) and Caravaggio's "Sick Bacchus" (c. 1594). In them, she interpreted the portrait of a Renaissance courtesan and the allegorical self-portrait of a male artist, in her recognizable manner, lending them her own likeness and assuming their formal positions, thus challenging cultural, i.e. gendered, spaces of their original interpretations. In order to do this, she clearly banished traditional decorum. Judging by the formal characteristics of her (self)portraits, i.e. inscenations, Cindy Sherman played with male gaze, with the Renaissance representation of idealized female nude, on one hand, reducing her to Neo Baroque naturalism. Thus, she introduced the five-centuries-old spatial and temporal dimension, which separates the original and her own interpretation, as a clearly feminist commentary on profoundly patriarchal culture, still actual today. On the other hand, Shearman interpreted Caravaggio's representation of ancient god Bacchus who, according the late Mannerist theory about temperaments was responsible for creative disposition of, traditionally male, artist. Lending Bacchus her own image that is not gendered, in this photograph – as we would like to point out in a comparative analysis of the originals and the artist's interpretations – Shearman, as a female artist, appropriated this representation of creative fervor as characteristic of artists in general, regardless of their gender. Although Cindy Shearman rejects the idea that this series of photographs is based on her knowledge of the feminist theories and discourses, it can be interpreted from the point of view of the famous theories of the social construct of (female) identity, of (female) creativity (Linda Nochlin) and the male gaze (Laura Mulvey).
