The topic is important concerning biology education because conceptions constructed during the primary level have effects on scientific thinking and its development later on. The topic has been studied broadly in other countries, however its investigation has not been popular in Finland. The study is a qualitative case study. The data was gathered in spring 2008. It includes drawings and interviews of 20 pupils from the 1st form at primary level. Its methodological basis is phenomenographic. The resultant data were analyzed qualitatively and quantitatively. Some of them had little appreciation, including only every-day concepts, and some had no conceptions at all. Misconceptions were common.
