The ‘Other’ showed up in Alexandria on July 2, 1798, in the guise of an opportunistic, idealistic 29-year-old French general. When Napoléon Bonaparte landed with 38,000 soldiers and 167 savants, the shock was cultural as much as it was military. In retrospect, the violence of the cultural encounter caused the defeat of Napoléon, but set in motion forces that would change the nation forever. Sheikh Hassan al-Attar, the only non-Egyptian (Moroccan) to hold the office of mufti of Al-Azhar and who taught Arabic to some of the expedition scientists, rightly foresaw an imminent intellectual revolution.

This course aims to survey modern Arabic literatures from 1800 to current days in poetic, novelistic, critical, autobiographical, and travel genres. The guiding theme is selecting literary samples that represent stages of modern Arabic history. Readings expose students to original translated texts from the creative texts of Arabs reacting to the challenges of the modern world. Dissertationsschrift (PhD thesis), Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn. Die Arbeit beschäftigt sich mit dem „Yolcılıḳ Kitābı“ („Reisebuch“) des Osmanen Hayrullah Efendi (1818-1866) sowie mit den Unterschieden zwischen den Textgattungen Reiseführer und Reisebericht. Hayrullah war Mediziner, Politiker und Historiker, stammte aus einer hoch angesehenen Istanbuler Familie von Ärzten und Religionsgelehrten, gehörte den Reformern der Tanzimat-Zeit an und war der Vater des später berühmten Dichters und Diplomaten Abdülhak Hamid Tarhan. Das „Reisebuch“ ist nur als Manuskript erhalten, da der Autor kurz vor der geplanten Drucklegung starb. Die Arbeit ordnet das Werk in seinen Kontext ein und untersucht insbesondere seine Gattungszugehörigkeit. Hierfür erarbeitet sie ein eigenes Unterscheidungskriterium. Auf dessen Grundlage sowie im Vergleich mit europäischen und osmanischen Paralleltexten kommt sie zu dem Schluss, dass es sich bei dem „Reisebuch“ nicht um einen Reisebericht, sondern um den ersten „modernen Reiseführer“ auf Türkisch handelt. Zudem enthält die Arbeit große Teile von Hayrullahs Text in neuer Transkription und deutscher Übersetzung mit ausführlichen Kommentaren.
