Royal Favourites

This paper studies how seventeenth-century writers in Spain elaborated different conceptions of interiority in connection with the intimacy they imagined between the king and his favorite or privado. Authors in the days of Lerma, Uceda and Olivares portrayed the relation between king and privado in terms that generally relied on inherited notions of ideal friendship, which nonetheless would clash with concerns about the ubiquity of deceit, simulation and dissimulation at the court. This seemed to set boundaries to the unlimited transparency and trust expected between friends. I will address three issues. First, the way writers imagine the favorite’s access to the king’s secrets, as well as the nature of these secrets. Second, the space of intimacy and shared loneliness in which they conceive the friendship of king and privado to materialize. Third, the transformations that take place in the favorite’s interiority as a result of his relation with the king and his position at the court. //

“Manosear los corazones reales”: interioridad y privanza (1598-1643). Este trabajo estudia la elaboración en el siglo XVII español de diferentes nociones de interioridad vinculadas a la intimidad que los contemporáneos imaginaron entre el rey y su favorito o privado. La relación entre rey y privado se describió a menudo, en tiempos de Lerma, Uceda y Olivares, en términos de amistad ideal, lo cual entraba en conflicto con inquietudes relacionadas con la omnipresencia en la corte del engaño, la simulación y la disimulación, poniendo límites a la transparencia y confianza ilimitadas esperables entre amigos. Trataré tres aspectos: primero, cómo se imagina en la literatura de la época el acceso del privado a los secretos del rey, así como la naturaleza de estos; segundo, el espacio de intimidad y soledad compartida en el que imaginan tener lugar la amistad entre monarca y privado; tercero, las transformaciones que ocurren en la interioridad del favorito como resultado de su relación con el rey y de su posición en la corte.

La aparición del valimiento en 1598 generó el establecimiento de un sistema de gobierno bajo la supervisión de Felipe III y la ejecución de Lerma. Esta cuestión ha sido estudiada desde diferentes perspectivas, aunque se ha mantenido un cierto silencio sobre la labor de don Cristóbal Gómez de Sandoval y Rojas, duque de Uceda. Por tanto, esta tesis doctoral examina a través de documentación inédita el desarrollo del valimiento de Uceda durante el reinado de Felipe III, así como el funcionamiento de este modelo a lo largo de la etapa comprendida entre 1606 y 1622. De esta forma, también se ofrece una imagen renovada de la figura de Felipe III, quien a partir de los procesos contra las hechuras de Lerma decidió que era necesario revitalizar el valimiento para preservarlo como sistema gubernativo. El rey fue capaz de insertar la actuación de Uceda dentro de esta idea, aunque fuese consciente de que sus capacidades no eran las necesarias para solventar problemas políticos graves. Desde ese momento, el monarca fue tomando diferentes determinaciones sobre la posición de Uceda y de Lerma, sobre la actividad de los secretarios de Estado y de sus principales ministros y sobre la gestión del patronazgo regio que evidencian su proyecto. Una gran parte de sus planteamientos se mantuvieron con el ascenso al trono de Felipe IV, cuando este aceptó el legado de su progenitor, a pesar de que, junto a Baltasar de Zúñiga y el conde-duque de Olivares, trazase la imagen de que el nuevo gobierno iba a estar regido únicamente por la idea del cambio. En definitiva, a través del análisis de la evolución del valimiento de Uceda se propone un estudio renovador sobre la acción de Felipe III y Felipe IV, los cuales entendieron que este sistema de gobierno era indispensable para conducir la Monarquía ante las obligaciones que tuvo que asumir a lo largo del siglo XVII.

This article examines a major figure of the court of Louis XIV who has never received a full academic study. It demonstrates how a royal favourite in a same-sex context in the early modern period can be analysed in a similar manner to more well-known royal mistresses, or “maîtresses en titre”. It presents a thorough portrait of Prince Philippe of Lorraine, better known as the Chevalier de Lorraine, in the full context of his family (a cadet branch of the princely house of Lorraine), his friends (the household of Monsieur, Philippe, Duke of Orléans, brother of the king), and court culture more generally at the end of the seventeenth century. Such an analysis demonstrates a number of things: that, contrary to much recent scholarship on homosexual identities and relationships in the early modern period, long-term partnerships did exist, although they were unorthodox; and that, like other royal favourites, the Chevalier de Lorraine maintained his position at the top of a powerful court hierarchy through both the support of his family and a prominent patronage network. Patronage in particular is examined, citing both usages of clientage and brokerage, as the chief means for self-enrichment and survival at the court of France in this period. By the end of his life, the Chevalier de Lorraine had become one of the most successful courtiers due to the combined factors of his princely birth and continued support of this family, his long-term cultivation of his position as “maître en titre” of Monsieur, and the effective management of a large patronage network.

Dans l’entourage royal, l’ami et le favori ne sont pas aisément séparables sur le plan du contenu de leur relation particulière avec le prince. Des défis majeurs se posent, notamment des problèmes similaires d’ordre conceptuel et notionnel posés par l’ami et le favori, mais également le fait que tous les deux sont concernés par les mécanismes d’ascension fondés sur le capital émotionnel et le principe de confiance et peuvent pareillement terminer par une chute dramatique. Finalement, la façon dont les contemporains perçoivent la relation avec le souverain permet véritablement de distinguer ces deux familiers du roi : une proximité considérée légitime dit l’ami, tandis qu’une familiarité condamnée dénonce et révèle le favori.

    In the royal entourage, distinguishing between friend and favourite is not easy in terms of contents of their special relationship with the prince. Major challenges arise, including similar conceptual and notional problems posed by the friend and the favourite, but also the fact that both are concerned with the mechanisms of ascension based on emotional capital and the principle of trust and can likewise end in a dramatic fall.
Finally, the way in which contemporaries perceive the relationship with the king really makes it possible to distinguish these two relatives of the king: a closeness considered legitimate says the friend, while a condemned familiarity denounces and reveals the favourite.
