Sequential Analysis

Die in der interpretativen Sozialforschung mittlerweile verbreitete Bezeichnung ‚Sequenzanalyse‘ meint häufig schlicht eine sequentielle Betrachtung von Protokollsegmenten, ohne dass diese in eine entsprechend methodologisch begründete Analyse mündete. – Demgegenüber ist festzuhalten, dass die Sequenzanalyse stets die – durch in der zu untersuchenden Praxis geltende Regeln konstituierten – Optionen zu entwerfen und die realisierte Option zu diesen in Relation zu setzen hat, um die Bedeutung dieser Auswahl bestimmen zu können.

Eine Reihe von Neuerscheinungen widmete sich der in letzter Zeit zunehmend genutzten Möglichkeit, die Datenbasis interpretativer Sozialforschung durch die Erhebungstechnik der Videoaufzeichnung (und überhaupt visueller Daten) zu erweitern. Um das Potential dieser Erweiterung einschätzen zu können und die – meist überhöhten – Ansprüche, die mit dieser Erweiterung verbunden sind, indem sie ihr Eigenständigkeit auf der methodischen Ebene zusprechen, ohne dies methodologisch auszuweisen, zu verstehen und angemessen zu würdigen, wird die Sache der Videoaufzeichnungen in der interpretativen Sozialforschung, rückgebunden an methodische Klärungen und methodologische Grundlegungen dargestellt. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden einige Neuerscheinungen zu diesem Thema teils en détail, teils in allgemeiner Form, teils gesondert explizit, teils implizit im laufenden Text behandelt. Zudem wird erwogen, ob die Konjunktur von „Videoanalyse“ etwas mit dem Zusammenspiel zwischen einer fehlenden Prägnanz in den Methoden interpretativer Sozialforschung einerseits und einer Sehnsucht nach Unmittelbarkeit in der Beziehung zum Gegenstand andererseits zu tun hat.

Engl. Title: Video recording in interpretative social research. Notes on methodology and method
A whole lot of recently published books and articles is engaged in the possibility to extend the data base of interpretative social research by video recording (and further types of visual data). The – mostly excessive – ambitions, which are linked to this extension are related to the claim of methodical autonomy without founding this methodologically. In order to be able to understand this, and in order to get an informed estimate of the extension’s potentiality the matter of video recording and its role and status in interpretative social research is discussed, taking into account also methodical clarifications and methodological foundations. Some recent publications are – partly en detail, partly genericly; partly explicitly, partly implicitly – discussed. Furthermore the question is raised if the boom of “video analysis” is motivated by the combination of interpretive social researches methods’ lack of precision and the longing for being related closely to the object of research.

Running studies with high statistical power, while effect size estimates in psychology are often inaccurate, leads to a practical challenge when designing an experiment. This challenge can be addressed by performing sequential analyses while the data collection is still in progress. At an interim analysis, data collection can be stopped whenever the results are convincing enough to conclude an effect is present, more data can be collected, or the study can be terminated whenever it is extremely unlikely the predicted effect will be observed if data collection would be continued. Such interim analyses can be performed while controlling the Type 1 error rate. Sequential analyses can greatly improve the efficiency with which data is collected. Additional flexibility is provided by adaptive designs where sample sizes are increased based on the observed effect size. The need for pre-registration, ways to prevent experimenter bias, and a comparison between Bayesian approaches and NHST are discussed. Sequential analyses, which are widely used in large scale medical trials, provide an efficient way to perform high-powered informative experiments. I hope this introduction will provide a practical primer that allows researchers to incorporate sequential analyses in their research.

Abstract
The article was provoked by a systematic difference between two reconstructed meanings of the same utterance at two different positions in a text that occured during its analysis. The terms ‚objektive Bedeutungsstruktur‘ (objective structure of meaning) and ‚latente Sinnstruktur‘ (latent structure of sense), used in Objective Hermeneutics, seem to yield a terminological solution to this problem. But due to the complexity of this pair of terms – it amalgamates three different oppositions – some irritation remains. The article gives an outline of the terms introduced by Ulrich Oevermann, then presents the remaining conceptual problem by analysing parts of a research conversation. Finally a conceptual and terminological solution, referring to Frege’s distinction between meaning and sense, is presented. Conceptually telling apart (a) manifest and latent meaning, (b) objective meaning constituted by rules and subjective, intentional meaning and (c) an utterance’s objective structure of sense and its comprehensive objective structure of meaning, allows to avoid the mingling to be found in the eponymous distinction.


Zusammenfassung
Ein systematischer Unterschied zwischen der Rekonstruktion der Bedeutung derselben Äußerung an zwei verschiedenen Sequenzstellen gab Anlass, seine begriffliche Fassung zu erarbeiten. In der Objektiven Hermeneutik scheint mit der Gegenüberstellung von ‚objektiver Bedeutungsstruktur‘ und ‚latenter Sinnstruktur‘ ein terminologischer Vorschlag hierfür vorzuliegen. Dieser ruft jedoch aufgrund seiner Komplexität – er amalgamiert drei verschiedene Oppositionen – Irritationen hervor. Der Beitrag skizziert zunächst die Verwendung der von Ulrich Oevermann eingeführten Termini, sodann wird anhand einer materialen Analyse das Klärungsproblem herausgestellt; schließlich wird mit Bezug auf Freges Unterscheidung von Bedeutung und Sinn ein Vorschlag zur begrifflichen und terminologischen Fassung des Unterschieds gemacht. Der begriffliche Unterschied von (a) manifester und latenter Bedeutung, (b) objektiv regelkonstitutierter und subjektiv gemeinter Bedeutung und schließlich (c) objektiver Sinnstruktur einer Äußerung und ihrer umfassenden objektiven Bedeutungsstruktur kann ohne die Konfundierung in der titelgebenden Unterscheidung terminologisch gefasst werden.

La question de l’engagement corps et âme au travail est au cœur de l’étude des métiers de vocation. Il a ainsi été montré comment, dans ce type de métier, ce sont des aspirations socialement construites et vécues sur le mode de la vocation qui donnent sens et orientent l’engagement. Pourtant, à partir d’une étude des carrières des danseurs de l’Opéra de Paris, l’article montre que la révélation sur une impossibilité de réaliser les aspirations ne provoque pas nécessairement une sortie du métier, une reconversion. En se fondant sur une analyse séquentielle de l’évolution du rapport au travail des danseurs, l’article interroge les facteurs sociaux permettant d’expliquer comment s’opère alors le maintien du sens donné à l’engagement. L’analyse met ainsi au jour des processus de recomposition de la vocation, faisant apparaitre, derrière les carrières professionnelles, des « carrières morales » de la vocation.

The commitment to one’s work, with body and soul involvement is a key issue in the study of vocation- driven occupations. In such callings, the aspirations that are socially constructed and experienced as vocations have been shown to provide meaning and direction to one’s commitment. However, this study of Paris Opera ballet dancers shows that realizing one’s aspirations are impossible to achieve does not necessarily result in quitting, nor retraining. Changes in the way dancers relate to their work are studied using sequential analysis, to examine which social factors may explain how this involvement’s meaning is maintained. Cinquante ans après Mai 1968, que sont les militants devenus ? Après avoir jeté toutes leurs forces dans la bataille, cru souvent en l’imminence d’une révolution, suspendu longtemps leurs investissements scolaires, professionnels et parfois affectifs pour "faire l’histoire", comment ont-ils vécu l’érosion des espoirs de changement politique ?

Cette mosaïque d’histoires de vie constitue la chair de ce livre et permet de brosser un portrait non impressionniste des soixante-huitards, de leur carrière professionnelle, de leur vie affective, de la continuité de leurs engagements et de leurs convictions, apportant des réponses enfin étayées aux questions suivantes : la vie des soixante-huitards a-t-elle été bouleversée ou simplement infléchie par le militantisme corps et âme des années 1970 ? En ont-ils tiré profit ou le déclassement social en fut-il le prix à payer ? Face aux convictions politiques d’antan, les militants font-ils figure d’apostats ou sont-ils toujours ancrés dans un rapport critique au monde social ? Peut-on dire qu’il existe une génération 68 ou n’est-ce qu’un mythe recouvrant d’un voile épais une hétérogénéité plus grande qu’on ne l’imaginait ?

The use of the polar coordinates technique (Sackett, Exceptional Infant Psychosocial Risks in Infant-Environment Transactions, 1980; Anguera, Establecimiento de pautas para la viabilidad de la categorización y reducción de datos en los marcos de conducta mediante la técnica de coordenadas polares, 1985) helps estimating the kind of the relation existing between a focal category and the remaining categories that make up the taxonomic system. Nowadays, there is no software application in the market capable of conducting the polar coordinates analysis and, consequently, it tends to be carried out in a rather unsystematic way. Given the need to systematise, facilitate and speed up the procedure, a software application called CoordenadasPolares.m was developed, this being an script file for execution in MATLAB® (The MathWorks, Inc., http://www.mathworks.com/), which performs a polar coordinates analysis of the input data for a given category and represents the relations of activation and inhibition between the behaviours on a vector map.

In contrast to two reviewed articles it is shown that it is necessary to clarify what can be hold as ‘knowledge-oriented communication’ (‘erkenntnisorientierte Kommunikation’) and that the articles yield methodically untenable conclusions; this necessitates to criticise the conceptualisation of ‘discourse’. Furthermore the assumption of a ‘doctrinal model of teaching’ is confronted with a dialectical relation of lore and teaching. – Concerning the second article a crtique of the reduction of the concept of gestalt of expression, of the concepts of case structure and structure of meaning and of the concept of opening parameter is given, the last one producing a misconception of certifiable data as being not analysable reconstructively. Certifiable data (testierbare Daten) conceived of as an objectified sequence of decisions is told apart from certifiable data conceived of as objectified problems of acting. The proposed alternative for methodical reconstruction: construction by an aesthetic judgement, is shown as requiring methodical analysis if science shall not be abandoned at all. – In summary in contrast to the criticised articles a rigid concept of method and objectivity is defended.

Gegenüber zwei hier kritisierten Aufsätzen wird die Notwendigkeit einer Klärung der Frage, was konstitutionstheoretisch (und methodologisch) als ‚erkenntnisorientierte Kommunikation‘ gelten kann, gezeigt und eine Kritik an methodisch nicht haltbaren Schlüssen sowie an der begrifflichen Bestimmung ihres Gegenstands ‚Diskurs‘geübt. Zudem wird die Annahme eines ‚doktrinalen Unterrichtsmodells‘ kritisiert und ihm ein dialektisches Verhältnis von Lehre und Unterricht gegenübergestellt. – An dem zweiten Beitrag wird gegenüber einem verkürzten Begriff der Ausdrucksgestalt, der Vermengung der Begriffe der Fallstruktur und der Sinnstruktur und einem verkürzten Begriff der Eröffnungsparameter herausgearbeitet, dass die in testierbaren Daten sich objektivierenden Entscheidungen als sequenzanalytisch rekonstruierbare Objektivationen der Fallstrukturgesetzlichkeit begriffen werden müssen. Die Unterscheidung von testierbaren Daten als Objektivation einer Folge von Entscheidungen und als Objektivationen von Handlungsproblemen wird eingeführt. Die Konstruktion aufgrund eines ästhetischen Urteils wird als ihrerseits notwendig methodisch überprüfbar dargelegt, wenn anders Wissenschaft nicht aufgegeben werden soll. – Insgesamt wird somit gegen die kritisierten Beiträge für das Festhalten an einem harten Begriff von Methode und Objektivität und die unablässige und achtsame Arbeit des Begriffs plädiert.

A multidisciplinary analysis (microfacies, sequential stratigraphy and clay mineralogy) was made on Frasnian/Famennian (F/F) boundary strata of the Steinbruch Schmidt section in Western Germany.
