Society, at large, has to realise the gravity of environmental degradation and participate fully in the mitigation of environmental problems. This article discusses the Indian initiatives and the important milestones in the path of environmental protection and pollution abatement. The commitment of the Indian Government to the cause of public awareness of environment conservation is reflected in its outreach and educational programmes involving its ministries, environmental monitoring agencies,NGOs, academic and research institutions. The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF)has played a leading role in the national priority programmes of environmental monitoring, assessment and pollution control. All the stake holders have succeeded to some extent in creating public interest in environmental issues but much more needs to be done.

This paper directs attention to the relationship between environmental education and sustainable national development. We argue that environment and development are intertwined and therefore must be systematically integrated into educational activities to produce environmentally accountable and responsible citizens and policies in the collective bid to achieve sustainable development.

ABSTRACT In social sciences and natural sciences, many points and facts are considered to be the starting point of the breaks that they actually experienced in certain processes. If we are dealing with environmental problems both within social and scientific sciences, we can say that the starting point is actually the Industrial Revolution .

The research directs attention to the relationship between oil economy and increase in female prostitution. Specifically, we x-ray the historical and dialectical origin of prostitution from the colonial to the post colonial era. We contend that, prostitution is a condition imposed on females from low income background by poverty and that oil exploration and exploitation activities which are a manifest consequence of the expanded reproduction of capital (ERC) accentuate the rate of prostitution particularly in Port Harcourt. It is against this backdrop that, we attempt to demystify the social processes and the dynamic relations that produce prostitution with a view to recommending theoretical and practical measures of curbing prostitution as a social problem.

This paper examines the historical dynamics and the dialectical processes that culminated in the designation, characterization and the objective reality of some part of the " Planet Earth " as " Third World ". Specifically, we show, how the expanded reproduction of capital via merchant capitalism, colonialism, neo-colonialism and the current global economic system have partly or wholly generated and reinforced the indices of underdevelopment associated with " Third World " countries and the inertia of continental attempts at unmaking Third World underdevelopment challenges. In doing this we attempt an X-ray of the New partnership for African Development (NEPAD) showing lessons learnt and areas for further research and practical actions.

The paper attempts to demystify some of the social issues that have made it difficult to generate meaningful development in Nigeria despite the huge resources at its disposal. In doing this, we x-ray some of the development theories that informed the strategies adopted by various regimes in Nigeria since independence to achieve development. Adopting the political economy theoretical framework, the paper identifies analyses and proffer possible solutions to these issues.

The coastal zone is a transitory zone between land and sea and between fresh and salt water. It is a zone where people use it for food production, for tourism activity, industrial activity, and transportation. Due to these activities, the coastal zone, especially in where regions surrounding semi-enclosed seas such as the Aegean Sea, receives high environmental pressure from the human. In today's increasingly urbanized world, coastal cities of the Aegean region are focal points for innovation, development and economic growth. This makes them more vulnerable and sensitive natural system. The main objective of this review is to explain the human pressures in the Aegean coastal zone.

The commitment of the Indian Government to the cause of public awareness of environmental conservation is reflected in its outreach and educational programmes involving its ministries, environmental monitoring agencies, NGOs, academic and research institutions. The Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) has played a leading role in the national priority programmes of environmental monitoring, assessment and pollution control. All the stakeholders have succeeded to some extent in creating public interest in environmental issues but much more needs to be done. National level institutions like NEERI, NIO and TERI are actively involved in research to find feasible solutions to our environmental problems and in the dissemination of relevant information through their publications. In our country, voluntary organisations and NGOs have been contributing immensely to environmental causes. Following the directive of the Supreme Court in 1991, environmental education is a compulsory component of school and college curricula. India has contributed significantly to the deliberations at COP (Conference of the Parties) fora especially the recently held COP-21 in Paris. Our suggestions for creating a pollution-free world have always been welcomed by the participating countries especially the developing countries. This article also presents the results of an environmental study carried out in Wilson College, Mumbai in which the effect of salinity on the rate of degradation of effluents released in marine waters, was quantitatively studied using reaction kinetics.

With growing global population and fast advances in technology, our demand for raw materials gradually increases. Gold belongs to the most valuable resources, being also relatively rare. As gold deposits available to hard rock mining are limited, extraction of fine fractions of this metal becomes more important. In order to maximize extraction of dispersed gold, mercury is often used to amalgamate with the metal. This method is very popular with artisanal miners all over the world, including Mongolia. In this article we present environmental and social threats posed by artisanal gold mining in Mongolia. Słowa kluczowe: Mongolia, małoskalowe kopalnictwo złota, problemy środowiskowe, problemy społeczne.
