Solutrense

The multilevel sequence of El Castillo Cave contains one archeological unit attributable to
the Solutrean techno‐complex (unit 10). We here present a revision of the classical data
and new radiocarbon dates, which allow a better understanding of the chronoarcheological
place of this industry. We also present new information regarding the faunal remains and
the hunting strategies based on the species present in this unit. In order to achieve this,
we use the ungulates NISP and MNI represented at the site, both derived from Obermaier’s
original excavation data.

RESUMEN La transición entre el Solutrense y Magdaleniense es una cuestión ampliamente discutida tanto en los territorios franceses como peninsula-res. Ante la dificultad de determinar la continuidad o discontinuidad entre ambas culturas, y sobre todo la identificación y caracterización del Ba-deguliense en Francia, se ha creado un crisol de teorías sobre el final del Solutrense y el origen del Magdaleniense peninsular. La caracterización de este posible nuevo horizonte, que se pretende introducir en algunas estratigrafías de yacimientos modernamente excavados con un claro cariz rupturista, introduce alguna confusión a la hora de determinar un contexto paleoclimático y cronológico preciso para estas industrias. La ads-cripción de niveles del final del Solutrense (Caldas XIV y 3-6; La Riera 9-14), y también del Magdaleniense inferior clásico (Caldas XIII), a un Ba-deguliense cantábrico, Solutrense Final, Magdaleniense arcaico o Magdaleniense inferior no es una cuestión menor ni terminológica. Por el contrario, la identificación de uno u otro horizonte sigue estando sujeta a comparaciones cronológicas, al estudio de niveles aislados o a la iden-tificación de elementos líticos y óseos aislados del registro arqueológico, que no siempre están presentes en su totalidad (raclettes, materias pri-mas locales, técnicas no laminares y técnica pseudo-excisa). Este trabajo se centra en el estudio de los depósitos del final del Solutrense y su relación con los más antiguos niveles magdalenienses, en el contexto estratigráfico del valle del Nalón (La Paloma, Entrefoces, y Las Caldas). Se presta especial atención a la amplia secuencia de la cueva de Las Caldas (niveles XI a XIII, XIV y 3 a 6), en la que se suceden las ocupaciones del Solutrense final y el Magdaleniense inferior en las salas I y II de la cavidad, y para cuya datación se dispone de 26 dataciones 14 C (AMS y 14 C convencional). ABSTRACT The transition between the Solutrean and Magdalenian is widely discussed question both in the French territories like peninsular sites. Given the difficulty of determining the continuity or discontinuity between the two cultures; and especially the characterization of Badegulian in France, a melting pot of theories about Final Solutrean and the origin of peninsular Magdalenian have been postulated. The characterization of this possible new horizon embedded in the stratigraphy of recently excavations sites with a clear complexion breakaway, create more confusion in order to establish a paleocli-matic and chronological context. The assignment of Final Solutrean (Caldas XIV and 3-6; La Riera 9-14,…) and Early Magdalenian levels (Caldas XIII)

The last investigations made during the excavation of the different levels at this important site to study the solutrean in the southeast of the Iberian Peninsula, have permited us to make some precisions on its chronostratigraphic position in the upper pleistocene. The calibration of a new radiocarbon date for the level IV (Upper Solutrean) and other six new dates (5 of them AMS) for the level II (Final Upper Solutrean) allows us to place this two cultural phases between the Greenland Stadial GS3 (end of OIS 3) and the end of the Greenland Intersatial GI 2, with a greater occupation of level II after the Heinrich Event H2, agreeing with the intersadial that come just before the last glacial maximum (GS 2). This new data modify clearly the before existing dates, making the whole record very much older. On the other side, the discovery of decorated panels with engravings and paintings, recoverd by Upper Solutrean sediments, allow us to place this representations, with great precision, in the Medium Solutrean (level VI) that must be placed between the GI 5 and the G 3. The excavation of the area that we call the microstratigraphy, included in level II (Final Upper Solutrean or Evolved Upper Solutrean), has provided 21 double layers of hearts, one of them with a stone structure and thousands of very typical solutrean flint implements that includes the characteristic barbed and tanged points, shouldered points and leaf points. The investigations carried out in the Laboratorio de Estudios Paleolíticos with this arrowheads, shows that they must be thrown with a bow.

Resumen El conocimiento de la ocupación humana del valle del río Manzanares (Cuenca de Madrid) durante el Solutrense ha presentado numerosos problemas a lo largo de la historia disciplinar. La ausencia de referencias estratigráficas, dataciones cronométricas y datos paleoambientales ha impedido que las industrias bifaciales conocidas en el valle desde comienzos del siglo XX, en ocasiones atribuidas al Solutrense, hayan sido unánimemente consideradas como una evidencia de la ocupación efectiva del Manzanares durante el Plenigacial Superior (MIS 2). La reciente exca-vación geoarqueológica del yacimiento clásico de Las Delicias ha aportado datos geomorfológicos, estratigráficos, cronométricos, tecnológicos y ambientales, que en su conjunto permiten caracterizar el yacimiento como un sitio de captación y talla frecuentado por grupos humanos con tecnología solutrense. Se trata por tanto del primer sitio solutrense del valle del Manzanares excavado con metodología actual, en posición estratigráfica bien definida, y con dataciones cronométricas y datos paleoambientales. Estos resultados constituyen un esperado impulso al So-lutrense del Manzanares, pues permiten poner en valor la importancia de la ocupación humana del valle durante este período, hasta ahora sólo inferida con datos demasiado inciertos. Las importantes implicaciones que presenta el registro solutrense del Manzanares para el conocimiento de las dinámicas poblacionales en el interior de la Pe-nínsula Ibérica durante el Estadio Isotópico Marino 2 aconsejan persistir en la investigación de Las Delicias, donde aún permanencen depósitos cuaternarios intactos. Abstract The Solutrean settlement of the Manzanares River valley (Madrid basin) has been a controversial topic over the history of the discipline. Despite the large number of bifacial assemblages, often considered Solutrean, known in the valley since the beginnings of the 20th century, their lack of stratigraphic references, chronometric dates and environmental data has prevented researchers from considering these industries as proofs of the human settlement of the Manzanares during Late Pleniglacial (MIS 2) times. The recent geoarcheological excavation conducted at the classic site of Las Delicias has provided geomorphological, stratigraphic, chronometric, technological and environmental data, which enable us to define this site as a Solutrean catchment and lithic workshop. Therefore, Las Delicias is the first Solutrean site in the Manzanares valley excavated with modern methods, in secure stratigraphic position, and yielding chronometric and environmental data. These data are a long-awaited boost for the study of the Man

El “Proyecto KURETES. Primeras ocupaciones humanas, evolución paleoecológica y climática del Cuaternario de la Cordillera Bética occidental”, aprobado por la Dirección General de Bienes Culturales de la Consejería de Cultura de la Junta de Andalucía busca analizar las primeras ocupaciones humanas en el contexto de la evolución paleoecológica y los cambios climáticos del Cuaternario de la cordillera Bética occidental, a partir de diferentes actuaciones de prospección y excavación arqueológica en los sistemas kársticos de la serranía de Ronda. La primera actuación arqueológica realizada dentro de este proyecto consistió en la apertura de tres sondeos arqueológicos en la cueva del Higueral-Guardia (Málaga-Cádiz) en agosto de 2011 (Baena Preysler et al., e.p). Los primeros resultados indican que contamos con una secuencia, muy afectada por la acción de clandestinos, en la que se documentan distintas ocupaciones a lo largo del tramo final del Pleistoceno Superior.

The Project “KURETES: earliest human occupation, and climatic evolution of the Quaternary paleoecology of the western Betic mountain range”, suported by the General Direction of Cultural Heritage of the Ministry of Culture of the Andalusian Government seeks to analyze the earliest human occupation in the context of the paleoecological changes climate during the Quaternary at the Western Betics Mountains, from different activities of surveying and excavation in the karst of the Serranía de Ronda. The first archaeological work conducted within this project was the opening of three sondages at Higueral- Guardia Cave (Málaga-Cádiz) in August 2011 (Baena Preysler et al., ep). Preliminary results indicate that we have a complete sequence, very affected by looting, in the recent occupations (Solutrean), that are documented along the final stretch of the Upper Pleistocene.

Este trabajo pretende ofrecer una imagen global de los estudios que se han realizado sobre un soporte tan particular y definitorio cronológica y territorialmente del Paleolítico superior como son las puntas solutrenses. Iniciaremos nuestro trabajo explicando los distintos tipos de puntas solutrenses que se han definido hasta el momento para posteriormente mostrar la información obtenida desde los estudios funcionales de las puntas arqueológicos y la surgida desde las réplicas experimentales. Ambas perspectivas complementarias serán el medio con el que hablar del grado de efectividad de las distintas puntas, los modos de enmangue, las fracturas que se producen como consecuencia de factores tanto funcionales y tecnológicos, así como aquellos generados como resultado de alteraciones mecánicas diversas. En todo caso, pretendemos aportar en qué punto estamos en esta temática más allá de la simple descripción morfológica.

Hasta hace unos años la meseta castellana era considerada como un lugar inhóspito que nuestros antepasados evitaban precisamente por las extremas condiciones climáticas. Sin embargo desde hace algo más de diez años, las investigaciones que se están llevando a cabo en varias zonas de la actual comunidad autónoma de Castilla y León, han demostrado que aquella premisa era totalmente errónea ya que paulatinamente han ido apareciendo en la zona nuevas evidencias del Paleolítico Superior. En la provincia de Segovia ya se conocía desde el año 1971 la cueva de La Griega (Almagro Gorbea, 1971) estudiada posteriormente por G. Sauvet (1983a; 1983b; 1985 y 1986). Más tarde, en 1992 se localizó el extenso conjunto de grabados paleolíticos al aire libre de Domingo Garcfa y las estaciones limítrofes (Ripoll y Municio, 1992). (Ripoll et alii 1994). Ese mismo año y con motivo de la realización de la carta arqueológica provincial, se encontró en la zona nordeste de Segovia un yacimiento que se inscribió con una adscripción de posible Paleolítico Superior. A instancias del arqueólogo territorial D. Luciano Municio que nos ofreció el estudio de esta estación iniciamos en 1999 una serie de campañas encaminadas a comprobar la posición cronológica de este asentamiento. Hay que destacar que en toda la zona Oeste y Norte del Sistema Central no se tenía constancia de ningún yacimiento encuadrable en el Paleolítico Superior. Tras cuatro campañas de excavación en La Peña de Estebanvela, podemos afirmar que este período está perfectamente documentado en la amplia secuencia estratigráfica de este yacimiento.

Con este trabajo presentamos un nuevo yacimiento en la cuenca alta del río Guadalete, que tras las evidencias, aún provisionales, de su emplazamiento geomorfológico y de un análisis tecno-tipológico preliminar de las industrias líticas es atribuible a una fase del Solutrense peninsular. Dadas las condiciones geográficas del emplazamiento nos ofrece una interesante perspectiva de futuro como patrón de asentamiento de grupos de cazadores recolectores del Pleistoceno Superior en las estribaciones del noroeste de la sierra de Cádiz

Recent research in Ambrosio Cave, in the southeastern corner of the Iberian Peninsula, has permitted us to establish more precise/y the chronostratigraphic position of major Solutrean occupations within the late Upper Pleistocene. The calibration of a new radiocarbon date for Level 1 V (Upper Solutrean) and six other new dates (5 ofthem byAMS) for level II (Final Upper Solutrean) allows us to place these two cultural phases between Greenland Stadial (GS) 3 (end of OIS 3) and the end of Greenland Interstadial (GI) 2, with the main occupation of Level II happening after Heinrich Event (H) 2, corresponding with the interstadial that came just before the Last Glacial Maximum (GS 2). The new dates clearly modify the previously reported chronology, making the whole Ambrosio record much older than once thought. In addition, the discovery of cave wall panels decorated with engravings and paintings, covered by Upper Solutrean sediments, allows us to place the art precisely within the Middle Solutrean (Level VI), which must be placed between GI 5 and GI 3. Excavation of "the microstratigraphy sector" within Level II (Final or Evolved Upper Solutrean) has yielded 21 coupled hearth tenses (one of them with a stone feature) and thousands of very typical Solutrean flint implements, including characteristic barbed-stemmed points, shouldered points, and leaf points. Our analyses suggest that some of them may have been arrowheads propelled with bows.

Durante las campañas de 1992 y 1994 se encontraron en el yacimiento solutrense de La Cueva de Ambrosio (Vélez-Blanco, Almería, España) un conjunto de representaciones artísticas parietales pintadas y grabadas del Paleolítico superior. Entre los grabados del panel I, se ha descifrado una excelente silueta de caballo, una representación de ave, unos protomos de bóvido y de caballo, así como otros trazos todavía no interpretados. En la parte inferior del panel existen pinturas, poco visibles a causa de una colada calcítica y de momento no es posible interpretar ninguna representación figurativa. En el panel II se han identificado un total de 25 figuras tanto grabadas como pintadas. La excepcionalidad del hallazgo reside en el hecho de poder interrelacionar perfectamente estas muestras de arte con los niveles arqueológicos claramente definidos desde el punto de vista cultural y cronoestratigráfico (ca. 20000 BP) Solutrense medio y Solutrense superior del mismo yacimiento.

The open-air rock art assemblage of Domingo García is located on the southern edge of the Northern Meseta, and comprises more than a hundred engraved Paleolithic figures in eight centers. The discovery of this type of site is still novel and infrequent, although in the last few years other assemblages ha ve been found, such as those of Siega Verde or Foz Coa, which are also located in the basin of the River Douro (North Meseta, Iberian Peninsula). In the present paper, we set out the main technical and stylistic characteristics that allow us to broach the chronological and cultural context of this assemblage of artistic expressions.

Este trabajo pretende profundizar en la movilidad de los grupos de cazadores-recolectores con tecnología Solutrense a través de las materas primas seleccionadas en los procesos de transformación y fabricación de las herramientas de trabajo, y la posible localización de sus áreas fuentes. Todo ello a partir de los estudios petrológicos desarrollados en el sitio de La Fontanilla (Conil de la Frontera, Cádiz).  Este sitio ha sido objeto de una excavación arqueológica preventiva durante el año 2010, donde nuestro grupo de investigación funcionó como asesor científico tanto en los trabajos de campo como de laboratorio gracias a un contrato OTRI de investigación Universidad/Empresa.

Resumen: El yacimiento de Las Delicias (Madrid), conocido desde la excavación practicada en el sitio por H. Obermaier y P. Wernert a finales de 1917, ha sido uno de los referentes clásicos del Paleolítico del valle del Manzanares, a pesar de lo problemático de su colección industrial, la cual ha originado interpretaciones dispares. Presentamos aquí los resultados obtenidos en un proyecto de investigación llevado a cabo en 2008-2009 destinado a mejorar nuestro conocimiento geoarqueológico del yacimiento, centrado en la excavación de parte de los depósitos cuaternarios aún conservados en el sitio. El análisis geomorfológico, paleoambiental y cronométrico de los niveles excavados, junto al estudio de la industria lítica recuperada, permite situar en el Solutrense el yacimiento de Las Delicias, hasta el momento el único conocido en el entorno del Manzanares –hallazgos aislados aparte– con industrias de este tecnocomplejo en posición estratigráfica bien definida.

Abstract: The archaeological site of Las Delicias, known since the excavation conducted by H. Obermaier and P. Wernert in the late 1917, has been one of the classical references for the Palaeolithic of the Madrid region, despite the varied interpretations of its problematic lithic assemblage. We present here the results of a research project carried out in 2008-2009, whose main objective was to gain a better geoarchaeological understanding of the site through the excavation of part of the quaternary deposits still present in the area. The geomorphological, paleoenvironmental and chronometric analysis of the excavated layers, together with the study of the lithics, allows us to place Las Delicias in the Solutrean period, thus becoming the only site in the Manzanares area –besides some isolated finds– containing industries of this technocomplex in a well-defined stratigraphic position.

The importance of the site of La Cueva de Ambrosio (Vélez-Blanco, Almería, Spain) is reflected in the numerous excavations that have taken him out. By the beginning of the century H. Breuil and F. Motos made a campaign that provided the first notch tip abrupt retouch the Spanish Levant. In this International Con¬gress we celebrate the centenary of this first excavation.

In the solutrean site of La Cueva de Ambrosio (Vélez-Blanco, Almería, Spain) several engraved and painted figures dated on the Upper Palaeolithic, have been found during the field works of 1992 and 1994. In The panel I we have identified an excellent representation of a horse, a bird, one bovidae and another protome of a horse. Below this surface there are many red ochre wall paintings covered by a calcitic speleo¬theme and for the time being we are unable to give any interpretation for it. In the second panel we have discovered more tone splendid red painted horse, two more enngraved horses and a little head of one other black painted horse. There are many engraved lines and pictural rests that must be studied in the future. The exceptionality of this discovery is that we can interrelate perfectly these rock art paintings with the archaeological levels clearly defined chronologically and culturally (ca. 20000 BP), Middle Solutrean and Upper Solutrean from the same site.

In 1982 we began a systematic series of campaigns that have continued with many interruptions to the present. First was the Ministry of Culture which took over the permissions and the grant of Dirección General de Bienes Culturales de la Junta de Andalucía. During the campaign of 1992 we made the discovery of rock art covered by archaeological sediments. In short, 100 years of excavations of Breuil and Motos, 50 years of those of E. Ripoll Perelló, 2012 also marks the 30th anniversary of our work at the site.

La Cueva de Ambrosio (Vélez-Blanco, Almería, Spain) is located in the Southeast of the Iberian Penin-sula. It is a karstic cavity with rock shelter morphology that contains a stratigraphic sequence composed of three sedimentary units with Solutrean materials. In this work we study the sequence from the geoarchaeo¬logical and chronostratigraphical perspective. The geoarchaeological study has allowed us to distinguish two litostratigraphic units, the lower generated by a mud flow and the upper formed by gelifraction processes which contains the Solutrean occupations. The last radiocarbon dates from the Solutrean of La Cueva de Ambrosio allow the clarification of its position in the Upper Pleistocene chronostratigraphic scale. The cali¬bration of the new 14C dates from the level IV (Upper Solutrean) and the level II (Upper Evolved Solutrean), can place these moments between the end of GS 3 (end of OIS 3) and the end of GI 2, with an important occupation event (level II) in the aftermath of the Heinrich Event H-2, coinciding with the interstadial that preceding the Last Glacial Maximum (GS 2).

The archaeological site of Cova Rosa (Sardéu, Ribadesella, Asturias) was excavated in 1958 and 1959 by Francisco Jordá Cerdá, professor of Prehistory at the University of Salamanca, who documented three layers (2, 3 and 4) that he ascribed to the Magdalenian and a further three layers (6, 7 and 8) attributed to the Solutrean. They were separated by a layer of clasts (Layer 5). The deposit was excavated again by Professor Jordá and Alejandro Gómez Fuentes between 1975 and 1979, when they concentrated on the Magdalenian occupations. However, between these two fieldwork seasons, Professor Jordá carried out another, little-known excavation in 1964. The results of this research are published in this article. It has been studied now thanks to his excavation logbook, and the discovery of the archaeological remains which are mostly stored at the Department of Prehistory, Ancient History and Archaeology at the University of Salamanca, but also at the Asturias Archaeological Museum. This work presents the study of the archaeological remains from the Solutrean levels (II and III) documented during the 1964 fieldwork.
