Systemic Risks of Financial Crises

Gringotts Wizarding Bank is well known as the only financial institution in all of the Wizard-ing UK as documented in the works recounting the heroics of Harry Potter. The concentration of power and wealth in this single bank needs to be weighed against the financial stability of the entire Wizarding economy. This study will consider the impact to financial risk of breaking up Gringotts Wizarding Bank into five component pieces, along the lines of the Glass-Steagall Act in the United States. The emphasis of this work is to calibrate and simulate a model of the banking and financial systems within Wizarding UK under varying stress test scenarios simulating rumors of Lord Voldemort's return or the release of magical creatures into an unsuspecting muggle populace. We conclude by comparing the economic fallout from financial crises under the two systems: (i) Gringotts Wizarding Bank as a monopoly and (ii) the split-up financial system. We do this comparison on the level of minimal system-wide capital injections that would be needed to prevent the financial crisis from surpassing the damage caused by Lord Voldemort.

In this paper we study the financial repercussions of the destruction of two fully armed and operational moon-sized battle stations ("Death Stars") in a 4-year period and the dissolution of the galactic government in Star Wars. The emphasis of this work is to calibrate and simulate a model of the banking and financial systems within the galaxy. Along these lines, we measure the level of systemic risk that may have been generated by the death of Emperor Palpatine and the destruction of the second Death Star. We conclude by finding the economic resources the Rebel Alliance would need to have in reserve in order to prevent a financial crisis from gripping the galaxy through an optimally allocated banking bailout.

Schularick and Taylor (2012) address a debate in the literature over whether broad money aggregates versus credit aggregates explain financial crises. Analyzing econometrically an impressive data set of financial crises and monetary and credit aggregates spanning 14 countries between 1870 and 2008, their results provide support for lagged credit growth as the better predictor of financial crises relative to broad money. This paper provides two modest extensions: First, while original analysis split the data across the major eras, pre and post-WWII, their data set encompasses the four major international monetary regimes—the gold standard (1870-1913), the interwar period (1920-1938), the Bretton Woods system (1948-1971), and post-Bretton Woods (or neoliberal) era (1972-2008)—for which I break down the time series to test if their results hold across each regime using the same methodology. Second, while Schularick and Taylor use bank loans as their credit indicator, credit aggregates in the neoliberal period encompass a greater proportion of tradable securities assets for which we have new data compiled by the IMF’s Global Debt Database (GDD). GDD also provides disaggregated private sector time series for businesses and households. I test whether these indicators improve the predictive capacity of the original authors’ baseline model. In the first case, I find their results hold, credit aggregates perform better. In the second case, the updated credit aggregates which incorporate securities as well as loans improve the baseline model prediction. I also find that household debt-to-GDP growth increases the likelihood of a crisis relative to the business sector.

The Great Depression is a great example of systemic risk events. The purpose of this paper is to point out several conditions of economic problem that may help the emergence of systemic risk. Specifically, the introduction of lending and stock market to the masses coupled with extreme optimism fuels the 5 economic conditions to collide together manifesting systemic risk occurrence. The boom has seen disparity between the rich and poor widen worsening the effect of the catastrophe as more poor people unable to survive the crash. One of the most important lessons is the necessity of government intervention to prevent future destructive behaviour.

Financial stability is a key precondition for an effective economic policy for both global economies and individual countries. Most of the financial system in Armenia is made up of commercial banks, so it is necessary to consider the stability of the banking system in this context. Since 2018, the Central Bank of Armenia has defined financial stability as its main goal, along with price stability. The article discusses the changes in the main indicators of monetary and macroprudential policies, analyzes the indicators of financial stability. The article discusses issues related to the transfer mechanism of monetary policy, the positive correlation between the financial and price stabilities.
