In today's business transactions, there are various reasons, namely, bulk purchase discounts, re-ordering costs, seasonality of products, inflation induced demand, etc., which force the buyer to order more than the warehouse capacity. Such situations call for additional storage space to store the excess units purchased. This additional storage space is typically a rented warehouse. Inflation plays a very interesting and significant role here: It increases the cost of goods. To safeguard from the rising prices, during the inflation regime, the organisation prefers to keep a higher inventory, thereby increasing the aggregate demand. This additional inventory needs additional storage space, which is facilitated by a rented warehouse. Ignoring the effects of the time value of money and inflation might yield misleading results. In this study, a two-warehouse inventory model with linear trend in demand under inflationary conditions having different rates of deterioration has been developed. Shortages at the owned warehouse are also allowed subject to partial backlogging. The solution methodology provided in the model helps to decide on the feasibility of renting a warehouse. Finally, findings have been illustrated with the help of numerical examples. Comprehensive sensitivity analysis has also been provided.

This research set out to clarify the construct of systems thinking and to define
it as a conceptual framework apart from systems science, systems theory, systems
methods, and other perceived synonyms. Greater clarity in the systems thinking
construct will assist any one of the many current implementation efforts in which
systems thinking is being applied in both scientific disciplines and practical fields.
One case of this is the application of systems thinking in public health. The challenges
associated with this effort are generalizeable to any of the other fields in which
systems thinking is being applied. The ambiguities of the systems thinking construct
are central to the challenges people face in understanding and implementing systems
thinking.

Background: The scientific literature on health care quality, health literacy, and chronic illness calls not for more data or innovative interventions but for a new paradigm that accounts for the importance of subjectivity and interpersonal relationships to these problems.  Specifically, leaders in public health and health care quality are calling for a systems approach and for practice-based research to address the Quality Chasm.
Research Objective: The goal of this practice-based project was to demonstrate the application of a Model of Dynamic Quality to the process of advising members of an outpatient services clinic via a council comprised of patients and community members and to share its results and implications for public health practice and leadership.
Data Sets and Sources: Participant observation was the primary means of data collection.  Over the course of two years, the primary investigator and council participants digitally recorded the majority of the council and facilitator meetings and more than 50 semi-structured participant (key informant) interviews related to the council process. Other documents, artifacts, and more than 2000 field notes also comprise the ethnographic record that is the data set for this project.
Study Design: An intentional mix of ethnography and interpretive phenomenology were used to accommodate the ambiguous, situational, and dynamic nature of advisory council structures and the inherent importance of subjectivity to the concepts of health care quality and patient-centeredness.
Analysis: The data generated through this project were analyzed using two processes—first, guided reflection by the project participants, then critical interpretation of this data through the application of a theoretical Model of Dynamic Quality.  Member checking (the process of returning to the participants, one or more times after the initial observation, in order to determine their thoughts on the accuracy or “truthfulness” of the information collected, the resultant themes, and conclusions) was used to address the need for rigor, validity, and “objectivity.”
Principal Findings: Specific areas for improvement in local practice were identified and were organized around four themes that emerged from the data: Purpose, Decision-making, Organizational Structure, and Communication. Dialogue was needed about the purpose of the council and their ideas about quality. Transparency was needed in the decision-making process. The use of existing organizational structure to frame a patient-centered care model was a barrier to the development of new relationships and to the integration of silos.  The concept of subjective/objective dualism and a bias for expert opinion were barriers to interpersonal communication in the process.
Conclusions:  The practice of patient-centered care is difficult in an expert-driven culture. Evidence-based templates, expert advice, and financial incentives offered by traditional, authoritative, agenda-setting institutions in health care and government are of limited value in local practice. The concept of Dynamic Quality and the principles of practice-based research can help identify and address problems encountered on the local level when trying to move the culture of hierarchical, expert-centered health care organizations toward patient-centeredness.
Implications for Public Health Practice and Policy: In order to address the 21st century health care challenges of quality improvement, chronic illness, and health literacy, current leaders and policy makers must acknowledge the limits of expert-defined “quality standards” and explore ways to give the power and responsibility for defining health and health care quality back to the public.  Systems science, practice-based research, and a Model of Dynamic Quality, as demonstrated here, are useful tools toward that end.

DSRP Theory is now over 25 years old with more empirical evidence supporting it than
any other systems thinking framework. Yet, it is often misunderstood and described in ways that are inaccurate. DSRP Theory describes four patterns and their underlying elements—identity (i) and other (o) for Distinctions (D), part (p) and whole (w) for Systems (S), action (a) and reaction (r) for Relationships (R), and point (ρ) and view (v) for Perspectives (P)—that are universal in both cognitive complexity (mind) and material complexity (nature). DSRP Theory provides a basis for systems thinking or cognitive complexity as well as material complexity (systems science). This paper, as a relatively short primer on the theory, provides clarity to those wanting to understand DSRP and
its implications.

This article explores the four sources of (scientific) knowledge: perception, inference, reference and comparison. In Western literature on the nature, criterion, scope and kinds of knowledge the importance of comparing, said to be the core of cognition, has been somewhat neglected, which is remarkable because no research (and certainly no country research) can be conducted without drawing comparisons, without taking two, or more than two, objects, individuals or entities and examining in what respect(s) they are similar and in what respect(s) they are different. Whoever decides to engage in comparative country research has to decide on (a) the kind of objects to investigate, (b) the respect in which to conduct the investigation, and (c) the research method to follow. In brief, important decisions have to be made, decisions that will determine the structure and accessibility of the research outcome. After reference to the problem vividly described by the old, Indian parable of the ‘the blind men and the elephant’, a clue is taken from Nietzsche’s perspectivism.

This article presents a new partial eigenstructure assignment method. This technique keeps the open-loop stable eigenvalues and the corresponding eigenspace unchanged. The remaining undesirable eigenvalues are replaced by other chosen values. This methodology is easy and permits to overcome some limitations encountered in the previous methods. Furthermore, our method is applied to solve the constrained control problem for linear invariants continuous-time systems. Indeed, the problem of finding a stabilising regulator matrix gain taking into account the asymmetrical control constraints is transformed to a Sylvester equation resolution. Examples are given to illustrate the obtained results.

Systems thinking is considered a much-needed competence to deal better with an increasingly interlinked and complex world. The many streams within systems science have diversified perspectives, theories and methods, but have also complicated the field as a whole. This makes it difficult to understand and master the field. Short introductions to fundamental questions of systems science are rare. This paper is divided into three parts and aims to do the following: (1) to provide a broad overview of the structure and purpose of systems science; (2) to present a set of key systems principles and relate them to theoretical streams; and (3) to describe aspects of systems-oriented methodologies within a general process cycle. Integrative visualizations have been included to highlight the relationships between concepts, perspectives and systems thinkers. Several new attempts have been made to define and organize system concepts and streams in order to provide greater overall coherence and easier understanding.
