Teenage Sexting

This article examines the motivations, techniques and potential consequences of the governance of teenage sexting. I examine the over-representation of white, middle-class, heterosexual, female sexters, and abstinence from sexting discourses in the ‘Respect Yourself’ child protection/crime prevention initiative. This campaign, I suggest, exploits slut shaming in an effort to responsibilize teenage girls for preventing the purported harms that may flow from sexting—including humiliation, sexual violations and criminalization—for both themselves and their peers. I examine this responsibilization effort through the lens of critical whiteness, queer, girlhood/young feminist and porn studies’ theorizations of the politics of sexual respectability and sexual subjectification and argue that this campaign simultaneously: reveals anxieties about the decline of the moral authority of the white, middle-class, heterosexual nuclear family; constitutes certain teenage girls’ unintelligibility
as sexual subjects; and, undermines teenage girls’ ability to challenge a normative sexual order in which they are often blamed extra/legally for their sexual victimization.

This chapter explores the laws that frame sexting with a particular focus on Australia and Europe. International concerns over the impact that new technologies have had on child pornography and child abuse have led to countries strengthening laws to protect children. The chapter analyses how such reforms have impacted on children who engage in sexting and whether children have been criminalised for sexting behaviours. It will be seen that some countries have taken quite divergent approaches. This chapter concludes by assessing how and whether a legal response to sexting is appropriate and necessary.

This research document reviews the ways in which the internet is being used in relation to child sex exploitation specifically Sexting and Grooming. It will evaluate what measures are in place protecting children and what could be done to further prevent children becoming victims in the future.

The practice of enjo-kōsai (“compensated dating”) arose in the mid -1990s in Japan. It is a trend, where an older, wealthy man sponsors attractive and significantly younger women (often
high school girls) for their companionship and sometimes sexual services. Those young girls, by becoming involved in enjo-kōsai relationship, are trying to make money to purchase brand clothes and accessories. Call Me Komachi (2003) is a play which deals with enjo-kōsai problem. The main protagonist is a high school girl named Reika, who has an older sponsor. Ono no Komachi, who is mentioned in the title of a play, was famous Japanese poet from the early Heian Period. Why is a poet from ancient Japan mentioned in the title of play about a problem of modern Japanese society?

As with the massification of all new media technologies, new practices have arisen, as well as new moral panics concerning how these practices affect young people (Tatar, 1998). In the context of this chapter, the reception of sexual messages is considered as part of sexting practices.

Sexting: percepciones de estudiantes tucumanos sobre motivaciones y riesgos Narvaja, María Evangelina* Resumen Este trabajo analiza, en función del género, las percepciones de estudiantes tucuma-nos acerca de: a) las motivaciones que conducen a los y las adolescentes a participar del sexting; b) las posibles situaciones problemáticas de la difusión no consentida de las imágenes, y c) las experiencias de ciberacoso sexual. Se aplicó una encuesta a una muestra representativa de estudiantes de la provincia de Tucumán. La muestra final se distribuyó en 346 mujeres (52.5 %) y 312 varones (47.3 %). Las edades estuvieron compren-didas entre los 12 y 20 años (M= 14.98; D.T: 1.6). Los resultados muestran que la práctica del sexting obedece a múltiples motivaciones, entre las que se encuentran el deseo de popularidad, de presumir con alguien que les gusta, o de tener relaciones sexuales. Entre las mayores preocupaciones de la viralización de las imágenes se encuentra el hecho de que sus padres se sintieran avergonzados y el riesgo de dañar su reputación. Los datos presentados en este artículo forman parte de una investigación en curso acerca de las repre-sentaciones sobre la práctica del sexting en adolescentes tucumanos, desarrollada con una beca doctoral otorgada por el Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones en Ciencias y Tecnologías (conicet). La reforma legislativa de 2015 del Codigo Penal, ha supuesto que la exigencia del «debido control» a las personas juridicas se haya ampliado notablemente respecto de la existente con anterioridad a dicha reforma. EnglishIn the present article is analyzed, in its different facets, the “appropriate control” which the legal persons must accomplish in order to avoid being criminally accountable because of criminal offence committed within them, according to the article 31.bis of Spanish Criminal Code. The Spanish Criminal Code legislative reform 2015, has meant that requirement for «appropriate control» to legal persons has been increased significantly in relation to the requirement before the legislative reform.

Research on youth subjectivities and disappearing media is still in its infancy. Ephemeral technologies such as Snapchat, Frankly and Wickr offer young people opportunities for discursive agency, harnessing teenage discourses of social positioning. These media facilitate social mobility in teen peer contexts by providing a medium for dynamic and shifting relationships. The transmission of digital images can enable a social flexibility that has a significant impact on youth subjectivities where discursively constructed relational identities are brokered through cyber technologies. We tackle the question ‘what discourses are evoked and produced in the discussion of disappearing social media?’ by exploring two parents’ accounts of their children’s use of this media. We also examine a discourse of innocence that surrounds teens’ use of social media and, in particular, ephemeral applications, by sexting and cyberbullying. We engage in the debate on the use of ephemeral social media to consider the discourses influencing youth subjectivities and the nature of networked publics.

Sexting puede definirse como la recepción o transmisión de imágenes, textos, o videos con contenido sexual explícito, vía internet por lo general a través de las redes sociales. El internet, proviene de las palabras en inglés INTERconnected NETworks (redes interconectadas); entonces, es una red global que conecta varias redes, esto permite la interconexión de computadoras mediante un grupo de protocolos denominados TCP/IP, los cuales son compatibles entre sí. Es una moda que se está dando en la sociedad actual, lamentablemente cada vez se va extendiendo más pero a modo de agresión sexual puesto que la mayoría de estas imágenes y videos de dispersan de forma incontrolable y con inmediatez, causando consecuencias impredecibles y por supuesto en la mayoría de los casos los resultados no son positivos. Tan grande es la diseminación de esta " moda " que desde tempranas edades, chicos y chicas comienzan a postear o enviar fotografías, videos y textos subidos de tono, refiriéndonos a desnudez total, parcial, actos eróticos, ya sea de ellos o de otras personas. Al momento de enviar este contenido al receptor, éste ya sale de las manos del emisor pues ha sido subido a internet y en manos incorrectas puede causar consecuencias atroces. No hay manera de controlar este contenido. Se podría creer que este fenómeno del sexting surge a partir de la necesidad de los adolescentes por sentirse parte de un grupo, de ser aceptados. Sin embargo, llega a causar marginación social debido a que es mal visto a los ojos de quienes no lo practican, o al menos de quienes no admiten que lo hacen. Es posible relacionar al sexting con el cyberbullying, ya que ambos son casos de acoso por internet. Tomemos por ejemplo el caso de Amanda Todd, estudiante canadiense que impactó al mundo en el 2012 por su caso de cyberbullying que la llevó a cometer suicidio. En esta situación, Amanda hacía uso de una página de videochat para interactuar con desconocidos y hacer nuevos amigos, así pues, un anónimo la convenció para que le enseñara los pechos en cámara; después de ese momento Amanda fue chantajeada con fotos topless (el extraño las publicaría) si ella no aceptaba mandarle más contenido de este estilo. Finalmente, sus fotos fueron enviadas a todos sus contactos, amigos, conocidos, etc. Pronto tuvo que dejar su colegio debido al bullying, sin embargo, no fue de mucha ayuda pues el bullying se convirtió en cyberbullying, y así fue molestada hasta la muerte. El sexting es un fenómeno actual que puede acarrear consecuencias muy graves, hasta incluso el punto del suicidio de los involucrados, y al no tener control alguno no hay manera de detenerlo.
