The Pillow Book

The Pillow Book (枕草子, Makura no Sōshi) of Sei Shōnagon (清少納言, c.965CE–?), written between the end of the tenth and the beginning of the eleventh century, has attained undeniable canonical status in the context of Japanese Literature. It also is the most translated Japanese text in the world, and occupies a stable place in the list of works that are considered as belonging to the realm of Weltliteratur. It has been adapted to the screen outside Japan (The Pillow Book by Peter Greenaway, 1996) and translated twice to Brazilian Portuguese (in 2008 and 2013). Later generations of readers have treated the text’s enumerations as catalogues of poetic topics or even, since the beginning of the twentieth century, and especially in translation, as poetry. The lists show a playful approach to language and to what Foucault has called the “categories of thought”. In this sense, Sei Shōnagon’s œuvre can be read in resonance with Foucault’s Les Mots et les Choses (1966) and its attempt to defamiliarize rational categorization, a conceptual device which can also be found in the work of Jorge Luis Borges. Sei Shōnagon’s work simultaneously mobilizes several layers of problematic concepts. On the other hand, none of these categories applies to The Pillow Book without engendering further conceptual destabilization. The issues of female authorship and woman authors’ relationships with their fathers in a patriarchal culture reappear in the film, in the main character’s journey towards liberation through writing. Those possible readings of the proposed texts contribute to the problematization of issues related to authorship, knowledge, translation and adaptation.

A partir de la película "El libro de cabecera" ("The Pillow Book", 1996) del británico Peter Greenaway, se discute la posición del cuerpo en el arte desde las ópticas oriental y occidental. Sobre esta última concepción, se discute al cuerpo como herramienta en expresiones del arte contemporáneo como el performance y  la incorporación del tatuaje en obras de arte.

This paper examines three manga adaptations of The Pillow Book (Makura no sōshi, early 11th c.) published in the past thirty years to show how popular culture challenges Japanese school education and its approaches to teaching classical literature. It argues that manga rewritings of the Heian-period text aim to increase modern interest in this ancient work and help to rectify misconceptions of it generated by national literature (kokubungaku) scholarship and traditional methods of teaching classical literature in Japan. Prioritizing the content instead of its formal features, these rewritings offer a new approach to the eleventh-century work by presenting the material in an engaging and relevant way that resonates with modern readers.

Este texto é uma proposta de reflexão em três partes sobre o tema “roupa” em O Livro de Travesseiro, de Sei Shônagon (Japão, séculos X–XI), discutindo a importância dos fazeres relacionados ao têxtil na sociedade aristocrática japonesa da Antiguidade; as suas ressonâncias no contexto da moda no século XX; e a maneira como a metáfora escritura-corpo-vestimenta se atualiza e amplifica na adaptação do livro para o cinema. No livro, texto, têxtil e memória se confundem, formando uma metáfora complexa que é também um comentário sobre a condição feminina na Corte Imperial de Heian. A adaptação da obra para o cinema (O Livro de Cabeceira, de Peter Greenaway, 1996) conta com a colaboração do designer desconstrutivista Martin Margiela, e acrescenta novas camadas interpretativas a esse aglomerado de imagens relacionadas aos atos de escrever, tecer, ler, traduzir, adaptar e desconstruir. O caráter fragmentário da obra literária pode ainda ser lido como em diálogo com o jornalismo de moda do século XX. O ideal estético do okashi, da literatura clássica japonesa, encontra eco no conceito de pizzazz, de Diana Vreeland, assim como no esteticismo da poética modernista. A roupa como metáfora do texto e a ideia de que roupa é texto estão presentes nesses três momentos interpretativos. This text is a three-part reflection upon the theme of “clothing” as it is found in a literary work of Ancient Japan — on the importance of garment-making skills as a device for the production of difference in the context of the Imperial Court; on how the theme from the book resonates in the context of 20th century fashion; and on how it is brought up to date and amplified, working as a metaphor for writing, in the film adaptation of the ancient text. In The Pillow Book of Sei Shônagon (Japan, 10th–11th centuries), text, textile and memory merge into an extended, web-like metaphor that is also a commentary on the status of women in Imperial Heian. The adaptation of the written work for the cinema (The Pillow Book, by Peter Greenaway, 1996) features clothes by deconstructivist Martin Margiela, adding new interpretative layers to this cluster of images, relating them to the acts of writing, weaving, reading, translating, adapting and deconstructing. The fragmentary character of Sei Shônagon’s work also resonates with fashion journalism of the 20th century. The aesthetic ideal of okashi, a concept from classical Japanese literature, resonates with 20th century conceptions of fashion, such as Diana Vreeland’s pizzazz, and with the aesthetics of modernist poetry. Clothing as a metaphor for text and the idea of clothing as text are present in those three interpretative moments.

The Japanese market of sex toys for men is an impressive array of human substitutes, most of which either appear to be sleepy or sleeping. Fully 30% to 50% of online catalogues feature such offerings, and new products are being released at a dizzying rate. Browsing the sites, it's notable how many Japanese sex toys play on the notion of unconsciousness. Eyes closed, cut off from the real world by sleep, these dolls invite their human companions to follow them into a fantasy dreamworld.

O Livro de Travesseiro, de SEI Shônagon (Japão, séculos X–XI), é um texto que pode ser lido como extremamente moderno: é fragmentário, questiona e reconfigura gêneros e categorias, e se baseia em uma persona/narradora central com uma presença dramática, individualista, e definida como em permanente crise. São essas características que permitem, por exemplo, que o livro seja retomado pelo cinema na pós-modernidade (GREENAWAY, 1996). Ao mesmo tempo, trata-se de um texto de caráter memorial, autobiográfico e elegíaco, uma homenagem e testemunho de uma época que já se encerrara no momento da escritura. É um texto híbrido, que se encaixa com dificuldade em noções despersonalizadas de autor. MINER (1990) propõe que se leve em conta a poética japonesa como base para uma interpretação da voz autoral dessa época e lugar. A poética japonesa, baseada na lírica, estaria mais próxima do “il n’y a pas de hors-texte” de DERRIDA (1967) do que da “mort de l’auteur” de BARTHES (1968) e FOUCAULT (1969). O presente trabalho busca discutir os pressupostos que permitem ler O Livro de Travesseiro como, por um lado, autoficção, e, por outro, como escrita de testemunho, e como as diferenças entre a maneira de ler no Japão e no Ocidente têm consequências importantes para a nossa concepção de autoria e verdade no texto literário. O texto é discutido a partir de modalidades como narrativa, ficção e testemunho, de maneira a esclarecer como esses conceitos podem se articular na leitura contemporânea de um texto da Antiguidade. The Pillow Book of Sei Shônagon (Japan, X–XI centuries) can be categorized as a memoir, an elegy and a tribute to an era that had already ended at the time of its writing. It is a hybrid text that sits uneasily with depersonalized notions of authorship. MINER (1990) proposes to take into account Japanese poetics as the basis for an interpretation of authorial voice within that context. Japanese poetics is based on the lyric genre, and could be described as closer to DERRIDA’s “il n’y a pas de hors-texte” (1967) than to BARTHES’s (1968) and FOUCAULT’s (1969) “mort de l’auteur”. This paper seeks to discuss the assumptions that allow reading The Pillow Book as on the one hand, self-fiction, and on the other hand, as testimonial literature, and how the differences between the uses of reading in Japan and in the West have important consequences for our conception of authorship and truth in the literary text.

Pretende-se inicialmente identificar, no filme O Livro de Cabeceira, de Peter Greenaway (1996), como se dá a representação da escritora, seja por meio da personagem principal (século XX), seja em citações e pastiches do estilo de Sei Shônagon, autora de O Livro de Travesseiro, clássico da literatura japonesa (séculos X-XI). Na sequência, discute-se como o momento histórico-social em que
o texto surgiu – a Era Heian – determinou a centralidade da mulher no cânone nacional japonês; hoje, esse status passa por uma ressignificação, no âmbito da world literature (cf. DAMROSCH, 2003) ou da république mondiale des lettres (cf. CASANOVA, 2002).

O presente trabalho apresenta algumas questões e resultados da pesquisa em andamento intitulada “O Cineasta, o Filósofo, a Escritora e seu Tradutor: presença de Sei Shônagon na obra de Borges, Foucault e Greenaway”. O projeto procura encontrar os pontos de contato entre a obra do classicismo japonês e a de autores da pós-modernidade ocidental, com foco no filme O Livro de Cabeceira, do cineasta Peter Greenaway (The Pillow Book, 1996). Neste texto, discutem-se alguns elementos intertextuais do filme com relação à literatura e o cinema japoneses, assim como o seu status dentro do contexto da carreira cinematográfica de Greenaway. This text presents some results and questions raised by an ongoing research project, entitled “The Filmmaker, the Philosopher, the Writer and her Translator: Sei Shônagon’s presence in the work of Borges, Foucault and Greenaway.” The project seeks to find some points of contact between Japanese classic The Pillow Book (10th century) and the work of postmodern Western authors, focusing on Peter Greenaway’s eponymous film (1996). The present text discusses some intertextual elements of the film in relation to Japanese literature and cinema, as well as its status within the context of Greenaway’s body of work.

Ao longo de sua história como clássico em tradução no Ocidente, O Livro de Travesseiro de SEI Shônagon teve sua integridade textual frequentemente desrespeitada, sendo reenquadrado para acomodar os objetivos de cada tradutor. O filme de Peter GREENAWAY pode ser criticado por inadvertidamente reproduzir esse “orientalismo de segunda mão”, em sua representação da cultura e literatura japonesa. Por outro lado, abordagens mais idealizadas do ato tradutório e do conceito de fidelidade não dão conta dos processos criativos de adaptação e reescrita artística. É necessário buscar uma abordagem teórica que integre os estudos de tradução e de adaptação, para que se possa compreender melhor como culturas e códigos diferentes interagem no contexto de um filme. A história da recepção da obra de Sei Shônagon, autora de O Livro de Travesseiro, no Ocidente, gerou uma série de “coincidências epistemológicas” entre os textos de Jorge Luis Borges (seu tradutor para o espanhol); Michel Foucault (que cita um trecho de Borges, com ecos da obra de Sei Shônagon, como a inspiração decisiva para As Palavras e as Coisas); e a obra cinematográfica de Peter Greenaway (diretor de O Livro de Cabeceira). A presença do hipotexto O Livro de Travesseiro nas obras dos outros três autores cria a possibilidade de se propor um corpus que relê o clássico japonês em contexto contemporâneo, elegendo-o como precursor da liberdade formal buscada tanto pela literatura e pela filosofia como pelo cinema, na segunda metade do século XX.

This paper aims to reassess Peter Greenaway’s filmography, in particular his acclaimed 1996 motion picture The Pillow Book, as a lucid reflection on the postmodern problem of textualized identities. By means of a thorough analysis of the sophisticated narrative, intertextual and aesthetical devices used in this film, this study identifies and interprets for the first time some particularly relevant visual clues, which give proof of a surprising depth and consistency as
cinematic metaphors.

Resumen:
Este artículo se propone reexaminar la filmografía de Peter Greenaway, en particular su aclamada The Pillow Book (1996), como una lúcida reflexión sobre el problema postmoderno de la textualización identitaria. Mediante un minucioso análisis de los sofisticados dispositivos narrativos, intertextuales y estéticos que dicha obra pone en juego, este estudio identifica e interpreta por primera vez ciertas claves visuales de especial relevancia, que dan muestra de una sorprendente profundidad y coherencia como metáforas cinematográficas.

While critics have explored Ozeki’s novel, My Year of Meats, in light of ethnicity, gender, environmental issues, and the politics of the food industry, this article focuses on an aspect that connects all of these elements—namely, the authorial collaborations at the center of the text. The two author-protagonists, the narrator, Jane Takagi-Little, and her Japanese counterpart, Akiko Ueno, define themselves in relation to a third author, Sei Shōnagon, and her tenth-century miscellany text known as The Pillow Book. In response to Roland Barthes’s arguments about the “modern scriptor,” I argue that Jane’s understanding of authorship shifts in relation to her increasingly intricate interactions with Ueno and Shōnagon, eventually leading to the realization that authorial power can manifest itself in positive and productive ways. Through these collaborations, Jane begins to comprehend her own hybridity and difference, her role as editor, and a new way to view creative and artistic freedom.
