The Seventh Seal

Статья посвящена средневековой аллегории Danse macabre и ее кинематографическим интерпретациям. Отмечается особая концентрированность, мотивная многосоставность данной средневековой эмблемы, позволяющая интерпретировать ее как понятие, обобщающее разнообразную — визуальную и звуковую — символику Средневековья, связанную с идеей всеобщего равенства в Смерти.
В качестве отличительной особенности данной аллегории отмечается также ее контекстуальная укорененность в катастрофическом типе сознания, присущем позднему Средневековью. Это делает ее подобием специфической призмы, путешествующей сквозь столетия и преломляющей в себе эстетические, этические, социокультурные ориентиры эпох со схожими кризисными аспектами в становлении картины мира.
В данной работе нас интересует, как авторский кинематограф ХХ столетия, обращающийся к Средневековью с его символической системой мышления, воспроизводит мотив Danse macabre на новом языковом уровне — впрямую или косвенно — через отдельные аудиальные и визуальные элементы аллегорических построений. И здесь две картины — «Седьмая печать» И. Бергмана и «Декамерон» П. Пазолини представляют весьма примечательную пару. Обе обращаются к исторической ситуации Черной смерти (XIV век). Однако, разница трактовок аллегории
Danse macabre у двух художников словно воспроизводит перелом самого исторического сознания (и в следствие этого — меняющейся на протяжении эпохи сути самой аллегории) — от средневекового эсхатологического ужаса и поисков подлинности бытия к ренессансному амбивалентному видению.

O Sétimo Selo, Gritos e Sussurros e Sonata de Outono, três importantes obras do cineasta sueco Ingmar Bergman, oferecem, respectivamente, a religião, a doença e a família como objetos de estudo, uma vez que são os principais condutores da narrativa de cada filme. Pretende-se vincular os acontecimentos de cada enredo a seus elementos norteadores por meio de um estudo teórico e da desagregação e remontagem de fragmentos técnicos (fotografia, cenário e roteiro) em cada obra. A investigação do conhecimento acadêmico já produzido auxilia na contextualização do universo de Bergman, enquanto a separação e a junção dos elementos técnicos originam interpretações singulares que estendem o conhecimento sobre este recorte do universo cinematográfico. Por ser uma pesquisa crítica, ela não visa a produzir teorias que se aplicam a toda a extensão de uma área do conhecimento (como o cinema), mas a desenvolver interpretações sobre uma delimitação de um tema abrangente.

Στον χώρο των σχέσεων της Φιλοσοφίας με τον Κινηματογράφο εντάσσεται και το θέμα που ασχολούμαι στο παρόν. Πρόκειται για την εμβληματική ταινία του Μπέργκμαν Η Έβδομη Σφραγίδα, όπου προσπαθώ να διακριβώσω φιλοσοφικές ανησυχίες και αναφορές που την διατρέχουν και οι οποίες μας μεταφέρουν στον φιλοσοφικό υπαρξισμό του Σαίρεν Κίρκεγκωρ. Η σύγκριση και οι όποιες αναφορές αποτυπώνονται και περιγράφονται δεν είναι αποκλειστικές και μονοδιάστατες, αλλά ενδεχομενικές και πολύσημες. Εν τούτοις, το κύριο μέλημά μου παραμένει η εξέταση των απόψεων του Κίρκεγκωρ και λιγότερο η αισθητική ανάλυση της ταινίας, την οποία αντιμετωπίζω κυρίως ως μια γέφυρα του β΄ μισού του 20ού αι. που μας περνά προς τα πίσω σε έναν φιλόσοφο του α΄ μισού του 19 ου αι.

I am writing a research paper in my Film and Philosophy course that explores Ingmar Bergman's The Seventh Seal in relation to Bergman's own fear of death. I will eventually expand on the topic, but I figured I would post the mini version that I have written now. This is a 1st draft, so expect it to be a little rough around the edges.

ÖZET Yönetmenliği ve senaryosu Ingmar Bergman tarafından yapılmış bir film klasiği olan Yedinci Mühür'de İsveç Kraliyeti'nin Haçlı Şövalyeleri'nden biri olan Antonius Block (Max von Sydow), kutsal topraklar için on yıl savaştıktan sonra yanındaki silahtarı Jöns (Gunnar Björnstrand) ile birlikte ülkesi İsveç'e döner. Zaman 14. yüzyıldır. Veba, İsveç'te hızla yayılmakta, salgının neden olduğu ölümler her geçen gün artmaktadır. Şövalye, güneş doğmadan önce hiç uyumamış gibi görünmektedir. Kalkar, denizin kenarına yürür, yüzünü yıkar, dua eder. Atını ve eşyalarını yol için hazırlarken, etrafa sessizlik hakimdir. İzlenildiğini hisseder ve siyahlar içerisinde yüzü bembeyaz hareketsiz bir figür görür. Ölüm (Bengt Ekerot), doğrudan kameraya (izleyiciye) bakmaktadır. Ölüm, şövalyenin canını almak üzere kameraya doğru yürür. Şövalye ölüme satranç oynamayı teklif eder. Eğer şövalye kazanırsa ölüm, onun canını bağışlayacaktır. Antonius Block, Jöns'le birlikte evine doğru yolculuk ederken oyun da devam edecektir. Jöns filmdeki en ilginç figürdür. Filmdeki diğer insanların aksine bilinçli, bir şeylerin farkında olarak yaşar. Materyalist ve şüphecidir. Diğer insanların acılarına karşı duyarsız değildir. Şövalye Tanrı'nın varlığına dair soru sormaya devam ederken Jöns diğerlerine yardım eder. Jöns, hayattan olabildiğince zevk almaya çalışır. Kuzu'nun (Hz. İsa) Yedinci Mühür'ü açtığını duyuran bir sesle ve şövalye Antonious Block'un karşısında ansızın Ölüm'ü bulmasıyla başlar. Adını Kutsal Kitap'ın vahiyler bölümünden alan filmin klasik temel sahnesi şövalyenin, sonu ertelemek, zaman kazanmak ve inancını doğrulamak amacıyla ölüm ile giriştiği satranç oyunudur. Şövalye ölümün önünde diz çökerek, ona boyun eğerek göçüp gitmeyi içine sindiremez. Ölümü anlamlandırmak, ne için öldüğünü, niye ölümü hak ettiğini bilmek ister. Riske girmeli, kendini kanıtlamalı, gerekirse meydan okumalı, fakat her ne olursa olsun anlamlı bir an yaratmalıdır. Oyun bu anın, ölüm karşısındaki bu "anlam arayışı"nın sembolüdür. Şövalye eğer ölecekse, niye öleceğini bilmeli, hiç olmazsa "Oyunu kaybettiğim için öleceğim" diyebilmelidir. Şövalye ve silahtarı Jöns yolculuk boyunca filmdeki öbür karakterlerle karşılaşırlar. Ancak şövalyenin ölümle oyunu sırasında bilerek taşları yere düşürmesi; Jof, Mia ve bebekleri Mikael'in ölümden kurtulmalarını sağlar. Filmin son sahnelerinde ölüm yine sessizdir ve bu muhteşem bir sessizliktir. Yedinci mühür açılmış, son gelmiştir. Şövalyenin başarısızlığına hiçbir açıklama verilmez. İnsan Tanrı ile karşılaşmak için boşuna didinmiştir. Yalnızlığını diğer insanlarla kurduğu sevgi ilişkileri ile tedavi edecektir. Yedinci Mühür'ün sonunda insan korkusuna ve yalnızlığına kurtarıcı bir cevap bulamaz.

My dissertation entitled, “Ingmar Bergman’s portrayal of death and dreams in his autobiographically influenced films leading to a new film language” argues that the films of the Swedish director, Ingmar Bergman has been inspired from his early life. This autobiographical element in his art forms lead to the creation of unique masterpieces with stylistic techniques which are unprecedented thus giving rise to a completely new language of film.
By analysing four of his films: “Fanny and Alexander” (1982), “Cries and Whispers” (1972), “The Seventh Seal” (1957) and “Wild Strawberries” (1957); I have drawn attention to the way he focused on the metaphysical world unlike his contemporary film makers who made social and economic conditions after the World War II as the central themes of their work of art.
The oppressive adult society which led him to create his own world of imagination as a child and escape reality through it gets translated into visual masterpieces through films later in his life. Dreams help to shape our inner psyche just like real experiences do. The unique portrayal of dreams permeating reality and acting as a means of self-realization is focused in the thesis. The realization of the real meaning of life upon confrontation with the timelessness of death plays a central role in many of his films.
The thesis argues how Bergman’s films serve not only as an inspiration to other film-makers and as entertainment for the viewers but also takes the spectators on a journey to a parallel world of imagination and dreams rooted in reality, in turn leading to introspection and finally affecting our life’s philosophy.

Antonius Block is not ready for death, or at least part of him is not. He wants a reprieve. His body is ready to die but ‘he’ is not. He fears that all there is after life is nothingness. His faith is shaken. He wants proof of God’s existence and wants to ‘carry out one meaningful deed’ before Death takes him. But he is a man who prays, a man who wants to confess his anguish, and a man who seeks God with wild desperation.

The article explores the manifestly allegorical nature of Kurosawa's controversial 1950 film Rashomon, and how it was directly responding to the dishonesty of individuals called before recent war crimes trials (1946-48). After noting the overt symbolism of the film's opening setting, which manifestly alludes to the plight of Japan, the trials which dominated the nation's media in the late 1940s are also discussed (it notes 29 employees of the film company had been purged). As is stated at the film's onset, the community was distressed because it was evident that lies were being told and the truth concealed: similarly, in post-war Japan no one knew who to believe about war atrocities. Testimony is compromised, Rashomon shows, because the guilty seek to hide their misdeeds. A direct comparison is made with Clouzot's film from the Nazi-Occupation Period, Le Corbeau of 1943, which told a story of village life to likewise highlight dishonesty and betrayal in time of war. As with Rashomon, there was a local backlash against the film due to the plain, if uncomfortable contemporary message it delivered. Kurosawa's use of a medieval setting/story to moralise, again, about post-war Japan in his later samurai films, 'Seven Samurai' and 'Yojimbo', is considered; although, as is pointed out, his allegorical purpose was completely lacking in the popular Western versions of these films, 'The Magnificent Seven' and 'A Fistful of Dollars'. (Another cowboy film, 'High Noon', is praised in passing and likened to Kurosawa's approach.) Rashomon's seeming influence on Ingmar Bergman's 'The Seventh Seal', another allegorical tale of ethics and personal conduct against a medieval war setting, is also highlighted. 5pp

Yaşam, inançlar ve insanın varoluşsal krizi hakkında yapılmış en önemli filmlerden biri olan Yedinci Mühür'e ve ustaya naçizane bir saygı duruşudur bu yazı. İnsanın varlığı meselesi çoğu zaman teolojik ilim çerçevesinde açıklanmaya çalışılmış olsa da sonsuzluğa kıyasla kısıtlı bir süreçte devam eden anlam arayışı insan topluluklarını mevcudiyetleri boyunca meşgul etmeye devam edecektir. Bergman'ın fiili, her daim gündelik yaşamlarımızın ve yüzeysel gündemlerimizin geri planında kalmasına göz yumduğumuz sorgulama gücümüzü bütün bu perdeleri aralayarak ortaya çıkarma girişiminden ibarettir.

Gerçeği arama tutkusu, insanî temel dürtülerden biridir. Varoluşsal bakış açısı, bireyin kendi varlığını anlamaya dair düşüncelere ve bazı sorulara kaynaklık eder. Bu durum, varoluşu anlamak isteyen birey için bir arayışı başlatabilir. Bunun için tercih edilen alanlar genelde din, felsefe, sanat ve
bilimdir. Varoluşsal bir arayışa eşlik eden dinsel inanmanın ya da inanmamanın imkânları teorik olarak sınırsızdır. Yirminci yüzyıl varoluşçu sanatı ve felsefesi, anlamsızlık kaygısını ve dini bir fenomen olan kutsalla ilgili şüpheleri ifade etme cesaretini ortaya koyar. Ingmar Bergman, kişisel yazgısını arketipsel imgeler kullanarak insanlığın ortak yazgısına dönüştürmüş bir yönetmendir. Düşüncelerini güçlü bir kalem gibi kullandığı kamerasıyla görselleştirir. Sinemanın önemli başyapıtları arasında yer alan Det Sjunde Inseglet/The Seventh Seal (Yedinci Mühür, Ingmar Bergman, 1957), bilinçten yoksun bir inancın yanında ikincil durumda kalan Tanrı kavramını merkeze alır. Yedinci Mühür filminde, ana olay örgüsü, sarsılmış bir inançla Haçlı
seferlerinden dönen bir Şövalye’nin, siyahlar içinde dehşet uyandırıcı bir görünüme sahip alegorik Ölüm figürü ile karşılaşması ve dinle yüzleşmesi üzerine kurulmuştur. Bu bağlamda, Yedinci Mühür filminin başlıca iki teması, ölümle yüzleşme ve birey-Tanrı ilişkisidir. Bu çalışma, Bergman’ın Yedinci Mühür filminde ele aldığı birey-Tanrı ilişki biçimlerini ortaya koyma amacındadır. Çalışma sonucunda, dinsel otoriteyi temsil eden Kilise’nin, bireyin varoluşa dair sorunlarına ve Tanrı’yı bilme ihtiyacına olumlu bir katkı sağlamaktan -ironik bir şekilde- uzak olduğu görülmüştür.

Una parte de Europa huye de la muerte. La otra se pregunta sobre cómo sobrevivirle. La presencia de la muerte ha sido icono del arte europeo y tema de la filosofía occidental desde las primeras imágenes que la representaron como un claro signo de su identidad. Una concepción específica de ésta se fragua durante la Edad Media en Europa. Frente a la idea oriental de liberación, según la tradición, el occidental tiene sed de inmortalidad, “sed de ser para siempre”. Como un río que arrastra sedimentos, esa forma específica de entender la muerte se representa en “visiones lúgubres” que recorren la historia de Europa, marcando una tendencia espiritual común y ofreciendo una comprensión de la existencia y de la muerte que se acrisola con la expansión de la peste. Esta última cambió la vida europea y sirvió de factor aglutinante desde el punto de vista religioso, político y geográfico.
La Cristiandad se ve asolada por la misma enfermedad, a la vez que responde a similares designios. En particular, con su visión romántica estilizada, Ingmar Bergman, en El séptimo sello (1957) aglutina los tres elementos clave del ser europeo en ciertos elementos icónicos
y argumentales de su filme, como son la pregunta sobre la vida eterna, la vida como peregrinaje y la conciencia de culpa. De este modo, la película en sí resulta icónica y exponencial. Respecto a la iconografía, la obra de teatro medieval La danza de la muerte, la figura del caballero o peregrino que regresa de las Cruzadas en Palestina y la Muerte jugando al ajedrez son referenciales para explicar esta mitificación de la identidad europea.

Starting from Ingmar Bergman's "The Seventh Seal" we cover the boundaries of the ontologies of God, Humanity and Death. In the end is Death really the great empty void or is it something more than this. Does the incarnation and resurrection show us a different view of Death that changes it from the terminal to terminus. From ending space to liminal space.

The theme of pandemic in arts (pestilence, plague, viruses) has
always been quite relevant. Almost each generation that faced the
similar catastrophes left rather detailed descriptions of such catastrophes.
Among numerous cinema versions on the theme, particular significance
is attached to a religious-philosophical parable “The Seventh Seal” by the
Swedish director I. Bergman (1957). The scenario of this film is based on
I. Bergman’s one-act play “Painting on Wood” (1954–1955). However, the
literary constituent of the film under studies is not restricted to this play
only. On the whole, it is important to point out a rich intertextual nature
of the film-parable. First of all, it is biblical intertext that attracts peculiar
attention – the “Book of Revelation” (Apocalypse of John, Revelation to
John or Revelation from Jesus Christ) and “The Plague” by A. Camus. In
addition, the author also focuses on the epos of the Middle Ages, which
is adequately reflected in the personosphere, chronotope, and intermedial
insertions. The issue of pandemic, viewed in the film, describes its matrix
in a very special way, gradually leading the viewer to decoding the
parable-allegoric element. Consequently, the film is perceived as a kind
of a “culturological encyclopedia” presenting difficult times in human
history, whereby mankind faced the danger of either bubonic plague, or
inquisition, or mass hysteria

Abstract The frontier of knowledge about the structural properties of sparse sets is explored. A collection of topics that are related to the issue of how hard or easy sparse sets is surveyed. The strongest currently known results, together with the open problems that the results leave, are presented
