Thermal alteration

El componente temprano del sitio cueva 1 de Cerro Tres Tetas presenta abundantes restos líticos, muchos de los cuales muestran evidencias de tratamiento térmico. En contraste, los restos óseos recuperados son muy escasos, si bien muestran un buen estado de conservación, por lo que no se espera que esta escasez se deba a alteraciones postdepositacionales. Se considera que el procesamiento primario y el consumo de las presas se habrían realizado fuera de la cueva. Entre los restos óseos recuperados, destaca una diáfisis de tibia de guanaco retocada  y lascas con claras evidencias de termoalteración. Estos restos no se hallaron dentro de los fogones, sino alrededor de ellos, por lo que esta alteración térmica no habría sido producto del descarte de los huesos en estas estructuras de combustión.
En este trabajo evaluamos las causas de alteración térmica presentes en el artefacto óseo consignado más arriba. Nos preguntamos si este rasgo es producto de un tratamiento térmico intencional con fines tecnológicos, o bien si es consecuencia de alteraciones no intencionales. Para esto, hemos realizado una serie de experimentaciones, en las que sometemos a tratamiento térmico a fragmentos de huesos de guanaco retocados y sin retocar para analizar las consecuencias que tiene este proceso, reconocer si conlleva algún tipo de ventaja en la producción artefactual y comparar los materiales experimentales con el artefacto arqueológico.
Por otra parte, evaluamos la distribución de los restos óseos recuperados en esta unidad, analizándolos en relación con la ubicación de los fogones tanto de ese componente como del inmediatamente superior.

El objetivo de este trabajo es presentar los resultados de nuestras experimentaciones referidas al daño térmico en artefactos líticos. El daño térmico se puede producir por diversos motivos. En este caso, nuestro análisis se centra en el estudio de materiales dañados producto de un tratamiento térmico, técnica utilizada para facilitar la talla de los artefactos líticos, realizado de manera deficiente. También analizamos materiales que fueron termoalterados al ser arrojados a un fogón y evaluamos si existen diferencias entre ambos procesos. Los materiales usados para nuestras experimentaciones son materias primas silíceas provenientes de la Localidad Arqueológica La María, Meseta Central de Santa Cruz.

En este trabajo analizo el conjunto lítico de dos componentes del sitio Casa del Minero 1 –ubicado en la localidad arqueológica
La María, Meseta Central de Santa Cruz a 155 msm– con cronologías de entre 11.000 y 10.250 años antes del presente. Evalúo las causas de termoalteración de estos materiales distinguiendo procesos intencionales de accidentales.
Para ello, estudio sus características tipológicas y los indicadores macroscópicos de termoalteración presentes: su ubicación en las distintas caras de las piezas y el análisis de las secuencias de producción permite identificar el tratamiento térmico y diferenciarlo de otras termoalteraciones. Asimismo, analizo la distribución de estas piezas y su vinculación con los fogones.
Los restos tratados, especialmente en sílex rojo, abundan en la Unidad 4; hay numerosas lascas de adelgazamiento bifacial con
lustre térmico. En esta unidad el tratamiento térmico se habría realizado sobre formas base. En la Unidad 3C hay escasos artefactos termoalterados. La alta variedad de materias primas posiblemente tratadas y su dispersión indicarían que el tratamiento térmico y talla de estos artefactos se realizó fuera del área excavada.
La termoalteración de las piezas dañadas no se dio durante el tratamiento térmico. Son escasas y proceden de cuadrículas con
fogones, por lo que probablemente este daño se haya producido por su caída accidental en estos.

In this paper, I analyze the lithic assemblage of two components
from Casa del Minero 1 site –La María archaeological locality, in
the Central Plateau of Santa Cruz. This site is 155 masl, with dates ranging from 11,000 to 10,250 years before present. I study the potential causes of the thermal alteration seen in these materials, distinguishing intentional from accidental causes.
To that end, I study typological characteristics and the macroscopic indicators of thermal alteration in the assemblage: their location on the flakes and analysis of the production sequences allow me to identify heat treatment as well as other thermal alteration processes. In addition, I examined the distribution of these artifacts to determine whether they were located near hearths.
Heat treated remains, especially those on red flint, are plentiful in Unit 4; many bifacial thinning flakes show thermal luster. I
argue that heat treatment was conducted on blanks. In Unit 3C there are few artifacts altered by heat. The wide variety and high
dispersion of raw materials that possibly received this form of treatment may indicate that this was performed in an area that has not been excavated.
The thermal alteration of damaged artifacts was not due to heat treatment. These are very scarce and were found in grids that had
hearths, and as such I suggest that the thermal damage was caused by an accidental fall into the hearths.

Este trabajo busca conocer cómo se distribuyen los artefactos líticos en el componente inferior, del Pleistoceno final, del sitio Casa del Minero 1, Meseta Central de Santa Cruz.
Estos estudios se vinculan con los análisis previos realizados en el sitio y en su paisaje circundante. El objetivo es aportar un cuerpo de conocimiento relevante para comprender cómo se implementaron en el espacio las estrategias de producción de artefactos y el papel que jugaron los fogones en la organización de las actividades. Se construyeron modelos de densidad artefactual por materia prima y según la secuencia de producción y buffers de distancias de las piezas a los fogones. Los resultados indican que la distribución de los distintos pasos de la
secuencia en cada materia prima estaría vinculada con estrategias tecnológicas y que la talla de las distintas rocas se realizaría en espacios diferenciados, principalmente en las cercanías a las fuentes de calor.

Colour Alteration Indices (CAIs) of conodonts in Peninsular Malaysia range in value from 1.5 to 8 (Figure 1).  The lowest values are found in Triassic limestones in northwest Peninsular Malaysia and the highest values occur in Palaeozoic strata within or close to zones of deformation or to intrusives. Palaeozoic conodonts from the Sibumasu Block (Western Belt of Peninsular Malaysia) show a background value of CAI 5, all conodonts of Ordovician to Middle Permian age showing CAIs of at least 5 and locally up to 8. Palaeozoic conodonts of Sibumasu exhibit textural alteration interpreted as due to regional metamorphism, whereas Triassic conodonts exhibit little textural alteration. The disparity between CAIs and textural alteration of Palaeozoic vs. Triassic conodonts of Sibumasu suggests regional metamorphism of these rocks around the Palaeozoic/Mesozoic boundary which is consistent with the previously suggested timing for initial collision between the Sibumasu and Indochina blocks. Upper Palaeozoic conodonts from the Indochina Block (Central and Eastern Belts), however, are more variable.  Late Lower Carboniferous (Namurian) conodonts from the Panching Limestone in the Eastern Belt exhibit a CAI of 3 and appear to have escaped the effects of the regional metamorphism that affected the coeval rocks on the Sibumasu Block.  Permian conodonts from limestones along the western margin of the Central Belt have an anomalously high CAI of 5, probably caused by the heating effect of the Main Range Granitoids.
Triassic conodont CAIs for Peninsular Malaysia show an overall range of 1.5 to 5.  The lower values of 1.5-2.5 are found in conodonts from the Kodiang and Chuping limestones of northwest Peninsular Malaysia and indicate that these sediments fall within the mature liquid hydrocarbon window. This indicates that these, and similar early Mesozoic sediments buried beneath offshore Cenozoic sediments, may have acted as source rocks for hydrocarbons now trapped in Mesozoic and Cenozoic sedimentary basins of the region.  Conodonts from the Lower-Middle Triassic of Gunong Keriang, south of the main Kodiang limestone, appears to be anomalous with CAIs of 3-4.  These higher values are unlikely to be caused by extra overburden but could be due to the presence of a subsurface intrusion.  Gravity data from the area, however, suggests that this is not the case and that migration of hydrothermal fluids may be the cause.  High Triassic values of CAI 5 are recorded from Lower-Middle Triassic limestones along the western margin of the Central Belt and are probably the result of heating by the Main Range Granitoids of latest Triassic-Early Jurassic age.  Values of CAI 5 are also recorded from Middle Triassic pelagic limestones associated with cherts of the Semanggol Formation in Kedah.  This CAI value implies an overburden of 7,500-10,000 metres if the CAI is due solely to burial but the estimated maximum overburden is only 3,500 mtres indicating that the CAI is anomalously high.

Numerous sorts of evidence of fires were observed in the cave of Les Fraux (Dordogne, France) and in particular the effects of fire on sediment were studied for a better understanding of their use centuries ago. Our present objective is the evaluation of the firing intensity by determining the past temperature (paleotemperature) attained by the topmost sediment of the archaeological fires. The principle of paleotemperature determination is based on the thermoluminescence (TL) properties of quartz and the magnetic susceptibility of the sediment. By comparing the TL signal of anciently heated quartz to the TL signal of thermal references made in the laboratory, we were able to obtain a maximal equivalent temperature attained for each sample extracted from ancient fires. The magnetic susceptibility (previously measured on the hearth surface) could thus be estimated as a function of temperature. Heated walls of the cave Chauvet-Pont d’Arc (Ardèche, France): characterization and chronology. Researches on the taphonomy of the rock art walls of the Chauvet-Pont d’Arc cave led to the identification and the detailed study of marks resulting from a heating process: pink and grey color of the rock, flakes due to the heat, and soot deposits. This thermal facies was observed in the first rooms, where the main red paintings are located, as well as in the deep rooms where most of the charcoal paintings were found. A paleothermometric study was undertaken by a thermoluminescence analysis of reddened limestone chips sampled on the archaeological floor or extracted from the walls. As a result, this study showed that the surface of the rock was heated in the past at temperatures ranging from 300 to 375°C according to the sample.
